Should I buy a land cruiser

Well, I am thinking about buying a new car and these are the advantages of driving a land cruiser. 1) Be rude to everybody else on the road 2) Can drive as fast as i want in 60 kmh road 3) Run over pedestrians 4) drive on the pavement 5) enter round-about from any lane and exit anywhere i want 6) Bully other drivers by tailing there cars 7) No restriction of one way roads 8) No indicators required 9) No restriction to stop at the STOP sign Thats the car for me but one problem ....

"Qatar" in Arabic

I got back from a short trip to Qatar last week and I absolutely loved it. I have completely fallen in love with the country and people. I had some great experiences like getting to meet a Sheikh from the Al Thani family, and it was amazing. He was such a sweet sweet man.

I'm doing up an artwork based on my experiences in Qatar that I might like to send him once it's finished (depending on how good I think it turns out...). I'd really like to have Qatar written underneath it in Arabic, or whatever the full name is (State of Qatar?). Of course, I don't know anything about the language and I'm not sure exactly how to write it.

Single vs. Family Package

Hello People,

Need your advice. Does anyone know about salary and benefit in Qatar Petrochemicals? Is it true that the standard there is lower than in QP, QatarGas or RasGas? Is the pay-grade there well-structured or is there ample room for negotiations? If I am offered to an assistant manager position, is expecting QR20000 basic salary excluding benefits/allowance reasonable?

Secondly, if I have a family with one child, is it common to ask for a compensation (for example higher basic salary, or education allowance for child instead of free schooling in Qatar) if I choose to live as single (because the company pays much lower for the benefits)?

No need to HR in Qatar

Posted in:

This is it. I must talk about this annoying thing here in Qatar. Don't submit your CV to any HR department, unless you're Qatari or from Europe or North America, because it's useless, your CV will be discarded instantly, and all this effort you spent on working on your CV is just worthless. If the HR employee is an Indian (like in QF), and you're not an Indian, she would treat you like [Mod Removed], she isn't even looking at you, she is busy with her MSN Messenger. And here we go again. Your CV is discarded again at the time you leave the room. It's clear. This Indian lady would prefer to give the chance for an Indian. Now, let's move to QF IT Dept. All staff is Palestinians holding the Jordanian nationality. I say that's cool. I am also Palestinian, holding the Jordanian passport. I tried to apply directly to the IT dept. They rejected me. They told me you're not Qatari. We've been told to hire Qatari people. We have so many non-Qatari staff. Time passed, and a friend who used to work there, told me that the IT manager hired some Palestinians staff, and all friends of him. I really feel bad regarding that. Once a person holds a critical position, he brings his wife, relatives and friends. I really would love to work at QF, and I tried very hard to reach my goal, but this is how it ends. F you QF IT manager.

The Inland Sea

Hi everyone,

Just a day or so after we arrive (and therefore before we start work) is our wedding anniversary and we'd like to do something special. A friend who was in Qatar years ago suggested a trip to the Inland Sea. Any opinions? How would we arrange this from here? Would we be able to arrange it just the day before when we arrive? Any better suggestions? Obviously something romantic (and not involving bus loads of people!) ...

Where Can I Buy Prada?

Posted in:

Without sounding like a brand queen, I only buy clothes twice a year and only from Prada, Miu Miu, Marni, Hugo and Dior Homme. Are these available in Doha or do I have to travel to Dubai or Riyadh to get them?

Handcrafted Leather Camels

Looking for someone who decorates the leather camels with Arabian artifacts.   Met a woman who sold at a preChristmas bazaar.    Not looking for those fuzzy camels sold in the airport or Hallmark!

Finding a driver

Hi everyone, soon after we arrive we're going to need to employ a driver part time.  How difficult will this be? Can we find a driver with his own car prepared to work half days five days a week?  Are we being incredibly unrealistic?  Any suggestions as to alternatives?  My husband drives, but I don't.  Our work timetables are likely to be incompatable.  I know that relying on taxis can be terribl;e and in lebanon I had a lovely man to get me to and from work.  Might I find the same in Doha?

Cell phone/ Long distance rates

I will be moving to Qatar soon and I would like to find out what the living expenses are; can someone let me know how much it would cost monthly to get an SIM card subscription and rates per minutes of air time. Also, It would be great if you can give me the rate of land lines for long distance calls to other middle eastern countries and North America.

Is it possible to get pre-paid cards for cell instead of subscription and monthly payment....
