Climbing, Archery and shooting sports

Hi folks,

As I will maybe (the decision will be made next week) stay for a quite long time in Doha, I have been wondering if I could continue my favourite sports over there. So, are there facilities for climbing and Archery as well as a shooting range?

SCUBA Diving

Hi Folks:

I'm new to Qatar and I work in Education City.... I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about Scuba Diving in Qatar? I'm PADI certified with about 120 dives (Advanced Open Water and Rescue Certified). I'm looking for diving buddies and for dive shops and boat operators in Qatar. Also, is there a diving club here?

Shopping Festival in Doha - International Trade Fair 2006

Posted in:

from Peninsula:

United Group for projects, one of Qatar’s fastest growing companies, announced it will host the country’s first ever shopping festival: International Trade Fair 2006.

Thousands are expected to take part in the six-day event which starts on May 24 until May 29 at the Qatar International Exhibition Centre, company officials said.

“We are very excited about this year’s shopping festival as it is the first truly international shopping extravaganza to take place in Qatar, said Qatar Expo Manager, Nicola Pero.

“We’ve had a tremendous response from retailers taking part in the festival this year and word spread extremely quickly as we’ve been receiving many enquiries from more European and South American companies interested in taking part in the festival in future years, she added.

The shopping festival hours are from 10am until 1pm and 5pm until 10pm.There will also be ladies only shopping hours in the mornings of May 25 and May 28.

Someone Special

What are good places where you can hang out with your special someone. When I say good places I mean romantic spots (ambience, food, service). Places which can be visited several times in a month. Please don't mention 5 star hotel restaurants or coffee shops.

Statistics about Qatar

Posted in:

Ever wanted statistics about Qatar? Check out The Qatar Planning Council's statistics page - via Marjorie in Qatar:

Recently a coworker pointed me at a website that made me ecstatic with the joy that only happy little numbers can bring: The Qatar Planning Council's statistics page.

Now we can all read up about those nagging questions that seemed not to have answers, like Qatar's divorce rate (30%), what percentage of court cases are for traffic violations (95%), how many cases of leprosy are diagnosed a year (15), how many of Qatar's women get married under the age of 15 (about 7 a year) -- I could go on! I'll just try not to snigger too loudly that the graph on education status misspells "illiterate."

Here's the most disturbing one so far: Sentences Passed Against Convicts by Type of Penalty and Type of Crime. 420 people were flogged for sexual crimes in 2003? WTF??

Have fun with all those numbers and be sure to post some of the interesting ones on Qatar Living for us.

LIONEL BART’S ‘OLIVER’ AT CNAQ NEXT WEEK

I just got that email..sounds interesting..

Staging their first large-scale musical production since the huge success of ‘The Sound of Music’ exactly two years ago, the Doha Players are staging Lionel’s Bart’s musical ‘OLIVER!’ at the College of the North Atlantic, Qatar next week, sponsored by HSBC, CNAQ and DTM. The show starts at 7pm on the 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th May with an extra matinee performance at 2.30pm on Friday and Saturday (26th & 27th)

Since the tragic loss of the Doha Player’s Theatre in March last year, the Players have been busy re-inventing themselves at alternative venues around Doha and have been most fortunate to have been offered the use of the splendid new 500-seat Auditorium at the state-of the art CNAQ Campus (near Landmark).

The 100-strong multinational cast and crew of ‘OLIVER!’ have been working long hours for the past four months putting together what promises to be a wonderful family show. Music for the performance is being provided live by a small orchestra and the large contingent of talented girls and boys from various Doha schools in the cast brings boundless energy and atmosphere to this very lively musical. Opening with the stage set in a seedy workhouse in Victorian London, the musical follows the story of a young orphan lad (Oliver) discovering his roots whilst being tempted towards a life of crime by the old and machiavellian crime-master Fagin. Menace and nastiness comes in the shape of the villain of the piece, Bill Sikes, whose performance will probably get a few knees trembling! Will Oliver be drawn to ‘The Dark Side’? Will Fagin add another young innocent to his gang of ragged pick-pockets? Bring the family along to CNAQ next week and find out!

Tickets available now at ICM, Music Master Landmark Mall and Art of Business Office. Tickets QR60 (students half-price). Snap ‘em up quick before they sell out!
