Working for Rasgas
By Winnie on Tue, 16/05/2006 - 10:41pmMy husband will be working for Rasgas Accounts. Does anyone know anything about this company?
Are they a good family friendly company?
What is their accommodation like? We are being given either a villa or a house - whats the main difference between the two?
Would it be better in Al Khoor compound or nearer Doha? We might have a choice.
Sorry about the barrage of questions but I have had tremendous difficulty logging on and have finally sorted it.

Goths in Qatar
By Winnie on Tue, 16/05/2006 - 10:03pmCan anyone help us? We will be moving out to Qatar in August. What is there to do for nearly 15 year old goths who is not really into sport and thinks his life is over now that we are dragging him off to the middle of the dessert?
SITE MAINTANENCE
Qatar Living will be upgraded over the next day - things may be a bit fuzzy but bare with me. Once this is complete the site will be much more fun :)

Can the available be valuable?!
By Aisha on Mon, 15/05/2006 - 3:44pmHaving so many “friends! can be a curse sometimes!
In order to keep them, you have to know how to deal with each and every one based on his\her whole history that results in the unique character of her\him ( every character is unique , I believe)...It’s not that you work hard to “keep them because you need them all.. no, it’s just that they are the ones who need you.. It just feels so selfish to leave those who cause you pain some times (because they are in pain!)….You chose to have them in your life, Or it just happened to be so…Reasons of the first place do not matter now.. it’s just that you are in their lives now…Deal with it!

Staying for the summer
By glucas91 on Mon, 15/05/2006 - 9:58amAlthough my husband has been in Doha for over 3 months now, my 6 year old son and I just arrived a couple of weeks ago. Since we just got here, we don't plan to return to our home country at all this summer. My question is... are there any organized activites - like day or half day camps - for elementary school children? Most of the advice I have seen so far is for one time activities or 1 hour lessons. My son is extremely social and I'm concerned that the entire summer will be consumed with trying to entertain him.
Right now, we've been at the house during the week because I am still getting used to the driving (and trying to get insurance for collisions). But I would love for him to have some type of regular interaction with other children during the summer.

U.S. Raises Taxes on Expatriates by $2 billion (over ten years)
By DohaAggie on Sat, 13/05/2006 - 1:10pmThe U.S. government has done it again - in a late night, backdoor deal, an agreement was put together to raise taxes on expatriates - by significantly altering the rules on deductions for housing costs, changes in the way taxes are calculated, and in a myriad of other complicated ways.
This increase starts with the 2006 tax year.
This has been significantly underreported by the mainstream media - and all U.S. citizens should immediately contact their representatives in congress and the U.S. President to voice their concerns.
There are some reports that a supplemental tax bill will come up in the next few weeks - offering an opportunity to rescind these changes. Please contact your representatives and voice your concerns.

Washing your hair in the water? Some are loosing hair!!
By jbaby675 on Sat, 13/05/2006 - 10:43amOK-- I am here in Qatar and have been for 2 weeks. Everything is ok-- had one slight incedent (I know it's safe but ladies still keep your eyes open). But for the most part everything is cool--
My question is about my hair and the water. I've been warned that the water may make me lose some hair. I may need to rinse with a bottled water like Evian to make sure I am not. Is this totally true? If so why and how can you avoid it? I have a lot of hair and Evian is expensive. I've been cleaning my scalp and hair with witch hazel and sea breeze (I am running out and need more) and you must wash your hair here probably more than other places (heat and dust). can someone clarify this with me?

Americans Living Qatar
By Jenni on Thu, 11/05/2006 - 9:56pmI was wondering how really safe is it for Americans living in Qatar. I know that Qatar is one of the safest places in the world, but for WHO? What I have seen of Qatar by pictures it is really a beautiful place, and my husband has been there and told me it is breathtaking. My only concern is my safety living there, especially for my four young children, and as an American I fear that.
I also know that approximately 2250 Americans are living over there now, but the United States has issued a travel warning to certain areas of the world and Qatar is one, it being in the middle-east.
I would love to move to Qatar and share that experience with my family, but I want to be safe and no constantly on the look out in fear of being attacked simply where I am from, because I do not agree as with many Americans with all of Americas foreign policies and the policies in our own country.
I thank anyone who would reply to my question, and I appreciate them taking out the time to do so.
Jenni

Marriage and Human Rights in Qatar
By camper on Wed, 10/05/2006 - 6:47pmTwo stories from the Gulf Times today - I leave the reader to figure it out!
Story 1Woman in marriage plea
THE Qatari Marriage Committee has rejected an appeal from a Qatari woman for marrying a Lebanese man, a local Arabic daily has said.
"They have been trying for two years to get the approval of the committee at the Interior Ministry," the report said. The committee has not given any reason for the rejection of the application.

Living Accommodations and Schooling in Ras Laffan?
By quique on Mon, 08/05/2006 - 9:31pmHello,
I have been asked by my oil company to consider taking an assignemnt in a gas project to be developed in Ras Laffan. I am currently living in Louisiana USA and have a daughter that will be starting 8th grade this fall 2006.
The assignment would invlove a domestic relocation to Texas in 1Q07 for the project engineering with relocation to Qatar for commissioning and start-up probably in late 2008.
My concern is that my daughter would start HS in Texas, with perhaps moving to Qatar in the middle of her sophmore year. I did some research and see that there is a good american school in Doha and lots of info on accommodations.

New fingerprinting regulation?
By iman0493 on Mon, 08/05/2006 - 7:32pmMy husband started working in Doha in February. He is currently working on his residency. A friend of his said there is a new regulation that non-European/American workers must have their fingerprints taken to get a security clearance. The process takes 4-5 months. What do you know about this new rule? The problem for us is that I am moving there with our two children in August and without his residency, they can't go to school. Any advice? Staying put in the States is not an option. Is it difficult to enroll children in school after the term starts, if we have to wait until Sept- Oct?
