Looking for Tickets to Canadian Annual Ball
By Rob Findlay on Sat, 06/05/2006 - 2:48pmHello to Everyone
My wife and I have just move to Doha and have heard about the annual Canadian Ball, but also heard that it is sold out. If you have tickets that you can not use, we would be happy to buy them from you as we believe that this event would be a good way of meeting people from home. Any assistance in the matter would be greatly appreciated. We can be contacted at 585-6044.
Thanks and have a great day.

Funtown double standards...
By Ingesu on Sat, 06/05/2006 - 11:08amBig dissappointment. I have not been long in Qatar but I am getting annoyed with so many double standards. I guess everybody does what ever they want. One tries to respect the culture here but I get really annoyed when others (expatriates of course!) don't do it. I held a party inside 'Funtown' where I had been told earlier on that no men can go there- not even kids over 12 years old!! OK, my own decision to make the party there. I made invitations explicitally explaining that. I am not muslim but have some friends that are. My guests of course were as outraged as me when we realised other party there was having male guests... The staff tried to explain it but it came to the basics: who paid more (I paid QR 40 per guest, I wonder how much the others paid). So, do they care or not about the traditions? Is it possible to 'buy' the space for a male?? Is Qatar really open because they want to be modern or is it all revolving about money? How sad!!

Housing in Doha
By zyrke on Thu, 04/05/2006 - 11:28amHi,
I'll be working soon in Doha. I got some information about cost of living, thanks for all who contributed.
I would like ask prices for house/apartment/rooms available in Doha. Actually, I'm looking for the economy type, but good condition.
I'll be bringing my wife and 1-year old child with me.
Can you give me range of prices. If I live outside Doha and travel to Doha for the work, is it advisable.
Sharing of house/apartment or do you call it villa, how can I look for it?
Your help will be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

What do the women wear?
By ummsumaya on Thu, 04/05/2006 - 10:37amHiya all,
Just wondering what the ladies wear in Qatar? Are there lots of scarves? What about completely covered women (face and all)?

teenager moving to Doha
By Islip36 on Tue, 02/05/2006 - 11:15amMaybe some of you have been in this situation, if so would you be willing to give advice or share your knowledge. My 19 year old son who was in school in the USA now want’s to come and join his father and me here in Doha. We were expecting a summer visit, but he wants to make this a permanent arrangement. Is this possible? How is sponsorship handled? Can we sponsor him? Do any of you have young people with you taking college classes on line? Would he be eligible for employment? I have told him he would most likely not be able to have girlfriends even as pals. It looks like our honeymoon is over. Has anyone else brought a young person in this age group here and if so how did they assimilate?

Any info on used BMW's?
By ditto on Tue, 02/05/2006 - 9:37amA friend of mine is considering buying a used BMW 3 series, a model probably older than 2004 (so that rules out Mannai's pre-owned cars which are no older than 2004).
Does anyone have any experiences? Where is the best place to look? Is it a good buy? What about the cost of spare parts & maintenance?
Any good or bad experiences are welcome :)

Ouch. got a toothache!
By yalla on Tue, 02/05/2006 - 12:20amWas dreading this day.
One thing I did not want to try out here was the dentist's.
No offence to any dentists on this forum but it can't be helped. I have an unreasonable fear of the dentist's and it doesn't help being in a foreign country!
Can anyone recommend a good reliable dentist to whom I won't have to give up my entire savings?

General Aviation
By Ransom on Sun, 30/04/2006 - 6:38pmWe are moving to Doha this summer and I have to leave my toy behind. Does anyone know of any general aviation opportunities in the area? I know that there is a flying club in Dubai but cannot find anything in Qatar.

Importing cars
By Ransom on Sun, 30/04/2006 - 5:33pmMy wife has been posted to Doha and we will be arriving mid-June to set her up. Her company will give her a car allowance which we will use to lease or buy something there. We have a 2003 Nissan Xterra which we are considering bringing over. My question is import duties and related cost when we try to pick it up. I know in Jordan or some other Middle East countries the import tax for autos is based on the value of the vehicle and can be quite high. I am planning to relocate in a couple of months and will need the second vehicle.

Sponsorship Change
By britinqatar on Sat, 29/04/2006 - 5:58pmHi all,
Does anyone know the latest news regarding sponsorship change without a release from your current employer?
I heard that if you pay something like QR4500 it can be done.
Thanks in advance

Any air frieght recommendations, please?
By lachalla on Sat, 29/04/2006 - 2:45pmHi,
We are having some trouble finding a reasonable air frieght company that will move our allowance of 500KG from London to Qatar within the budget allowed to us by QU (around 2500 USD). Is the allowance a reasonable? I did a look and see that London, in comparison with mainland Europe and the US, does seem to have ridiculous prices. Can anyone recommend a decent carrier please?
