UAE top in Gulf in happiness report

Nation beats Britain and Iceland with world ranking of 17 among 156 countries
By Faisal Masudi, Staff Reporter
Published: 20:00 March 19, 2013

Ajman: The UAE ranks highest among Gulf countries — as well as and above Britain and Iceland — in the World Happiness Report, it was revealed during the Quality of Life conference in Ajman on Tuesday.

Out of 156 countries ranked, the UAE is 17 — the regional best — beating Saudi Arabia’s 26. A step below the UAE is Britain at 18 while Iceland ranks 20.

Denmark is the world’s happiest country while the least happy is Togo, a small West African state, the report suggests.

The conference, at Kempinski Hotel Ajman, was held a day ahead of the International Day of Happiness (March 20).

Why the sudden glut of Qatar rumours?

Qatar is famous for its vast oil reserves, winning the right to host the 2022 World Cup and being infuriatingly discreet about its investment plans – but it is suddenly attracting all sorts of attention.

Two weeks ago there was speculation that Qatar was about to make a bid for Arsenal, which was followed last week by a Financial Times piece about the emirate having a £10bn infrastructure fund to invest in the UK.

Then came reports in the Times that Qatar was about to launch the "Dream Football League", supposedly to challenge UEFA's Champions League, before the weekend's suggestions that the sovereign wealth fund was looking at bidding £8bn for our embattled retailer Marks & Spencer.

Why the sudden glut of Qatar rumours?

Pope Francis has been selected

Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina was elected in a surprise choice to be the new leader of the troubled Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, and said he would take the name Francis I.

Pope Francis, 76, appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica just over an hour after white smoke poured from a chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel to signal he had been chosen to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

The choice of Bergoglio was announced by French cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran with the Latin words “Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam” (“I announce to you a great joy. We have a pope”

In a world first, Japan extracts 'fire ice' gas from seabed

Japan said on Tuesday it had successfully extracted methane hydrate, known as " fire ice", from its seabed, possibly unlocking many years' worth of gas for the resource-starved country.

In what they are claiming as a world first, a consortium is drilling for the hydrate, a fossil fuel that looks like ice but consists of very densely-packed methane surrounded by water molecules, one kilometre (3,300 feet) below sea level.

The solid white substance burns with a pale flame, leaving nothing but water. One cubic metre of it is estimated to contain many times the equivalent volume of methane in gas form.
