Reason for fire
As the smoke subsides it is time to ponder over the reasons for fire to happen even in a world renowned luxury complex like villagio. Even a person with a fair understanding of the state of construction field in the country will vouch for the poor standards of workmanship and corruption prevailing in the construction industry dominated by unscrupulous and fly-by-the night contractors out there just to make a quick buck using cheap and inefficient labour from Asian countries. The truth is it is hard to get quality skilled labour for electrical works, plumbing and fire protection equipment installation even from asian countries nowadays, and the folks here actually get less than what their compatriots earn in their own countries. "Engineers" hired are often just fresh graduates with little or no experience who join just to learn the ropes and gets less than a driver's salary. And this tells on the work quality. Fortunately Qatar prescribes uncompromising international accepted standards for all construction aspects, but it is easy to overlook things in this period of frenzied construction boom. But as the foreign contractors are likely to have least commitment to the quality of their work rather than passing their bill, it is incumbent on the government to give this more attention to avoid such further mishaps.

I agree with you on this. Most of the companies are hiring inefficient & unskilled workers for low salaries. It's not easy to get fine workmanship here . I think the government will have to pay more attention on this. Answered on Wed, 30/05/2012 - 8:20am

Its true... But the problem currently faced in most Middle East region is the companies are trying to make maximum profit and they just outsource the projects to subcontracting company whose managers and senior engineers just do talking.... The lower level workers are being exploited by these managers.. Years back Qatar was following best standard of business. Experienced and hardworking employees were paid very well.. and these employees did their work very well... Now things are different,,,,, Those employees who talk alot... promise alot... and doesnt do any work ..gets paid very well... they get in to companies via recommendation. SO the productivity of the current Qatar work force.. generally is very bad.... Answered on Wed, 30/05/2012 - 12:55pm
