the wait (all 5 fingers plucked together and forwarded in your face) hand gesture, isn't that offensive!!
sometimes i get caught into this act,i think its an arabic gesture and it means wait.they do this gesture and i ask them & they say it simply means wait.i think it's offensive and sarcastic and downgrading.i tried gesturing it back to some guy whose trigger happy doing it to me and guess what...i saw the offended look in his face & never tried doing it to me again.can anyone enlighten me on this??

Well its basically a habit for people in the Gulf to gesture with 5 fingers meeting their tips together asking for a person to wait, along with uttering the word "sabr" or "sabur" meaning have some patience. It is conveyed in a good sense most of the times but when the other person is getting impatient this gesture might offend him/her. Its more of a situational expression meaning "have some patience".
