bringing "unnacommpanied air luggage" from the USA

Hi all!

Moving to Qatar in a few weeks for the first time. I have been given an allowance for "unaccompanied air luggage" to get my books and personal items to Doha. However, the airlines (United, Qatar Airways) say I have to go thru a qualified shipping company to make this happen. This is the first time I've ever done something like this--how the heck do I do it?

Or can I just mail myself my items via international postal mail? It seems POSSIBLE to do so, but is it a good idea? Have you done this, and if so, are there a lot of customs steps that must then be taken in Qatar?

Thanks VERY much for any suggestions.

Mailing it will probably mean you won't see it before 6 months, if you're lucky.

Call United and ask them what you need to do. They will know exactly the costs and procedures are .

At most you will have to go to the cargo office to clear customs and pick up your bag.
