Taxes
Hi there I am new to Qatarliving so would like to say a big hello to you all :o)
I am about to move out to Doha in January next year to work for a foreign employer in the medical industry & my query relates to the payment of my taxes.
My understanding of the tax situation is that as I am moving to Doha in January time therefore not at the start of a financial year,I will be still be liable to pay taxes on any wages earned out in Doha for the time period Jan 09 - April 2010. The reason for this being I will have been a resident in the UK for over 183 days in the financial year 2009-2010 and as such will still be classed as a UK resident.
However as my contract runs for a year and assuming I commence my contract in January do I assume this means I will not be liable for paying taxes on monies that I then earn in Doha for the period April 2009 to Jan 2010 on my return (if I return after the years contract)? I make this assumption as I will have been a UK resident for less than the 183 days during that financial year therefore making me a non UK resident?
Hope that makes sense to someone? lol as I am confusing myself with it all now!

Be very careful. I thought it was a "Full Tax Year" to get tax free. Ask your local tax office. They'll tell you straight. I've been out of UK 15 years so I'm 'normally non-resident' :o) Answered on Sat, 15/11/2008 - 8:27pm

Because of how the tax year runs in the UK you can work out how much tax you will owe if you come out here in january. Because the tax you pay is based on your annual salary if you are not working in the uk January through April you will pay lower tax for the tax year! If that makes sense - and sometimes you are entitled to tax back if you don't work the whole financial year. You will have to fill in a non-resident form to say you will not be earning in the country. Phone your local tax office, explain your situation and they should be able to help you.
