Dealing with Trolls

As out community has seen a lot of growth and with it all the teething problems associated with growth.
Trolling has become an increasing issue - many people believe that because something is on the internet that means that they are free to say or do anything that they please. This isn't the case. Qatar Living is not your personal site - it is a site made up of our whole community which consists of people from many different nationalities, religions and ideologies. If you require a personal site where you are free to write whatever you like and where you can rant, swear and abuse people to your hearts content, please feel free to register with http://www.blogger.com
Qatar Living is a public forum where all users should give and get respect. Over the year we have built up a healthy decorum without the need for any moderation or rules.
While I am loath to introduce rules, due to the number of requests coming from the community I believe we need to think of new ways to ensure that our community prospers in a healthy and meaningful way.
Many of you have already sent through some fantastic ideas for guidelines and ways to deal with users who are abusive. Thank you so much - your concern and care for this community is what makes this site fabulous.
I think it is time that we introduced some "Guidelines" for use of the site. Nothing crazy - just some simple rules to get new members up to speed on how our community operates.
Please feel free to send me your suggestions and ideas.
In the meantime, to help us understand what has happened, here is a bit about "Internet Trolls" from Wikipedia :
In Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, often in the form of posting messages that are inflammatory, insulting, incorrect, inaccurate, absurd, or off-topic, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others.
The best way to deal with these people is NOT to take the bait and respond to them. Don't comment and send me a note with the URL of the inappropriate post. People like this thrive on attention - deny it to them and they should go away.

To Qatari You are so right. ...To Qatari
You are so right. We should just ignore this kind of people. Let's talk more about living in Qatar as an expat, Local or foreigners. We should share our experiences and knowledge to other who need some help to get to know more about Doha or Qatar.
Thanks for the reminder. Keep the good work!

Dweller ...Careful you don't bit that tongue off!! I know it's hard, and I've been guilty of taking the bait and wading in, but Qatari is right - these people only post what they do to provoke a reaction. And like all naughty children seeking attention, it's best just to ignore them.
There are enough people who can have a laugh in an adult fashion and provide information on this site for it to survive. And that doesn't mean that we won't sometimes have some healthy - maybe even heated - debate, as long as it's done with respect.
Keep up all the good work people. I look forward to my move to Qatar in August.

Byrdgang... ...I have been reading through Byrdgang's posts, his language is directly similar to that of the RuggerRell yesterday. Mentions of "hood" etc and his derogatory remarks to all and sundry.
Suggest an IP trace is done on both characters and if possible blocked.
This guy(s) is blatantly an american forces based personnel, who has far to much time on his hands.

QATARI ...I'VE SENT U MY SUGGESTIONS ON UR MAIL .. HOPE U READ IT ..
I AGREE WITH U TOTALLY BUT I'M ONE OF THE GUYS WHO IS HOT BLOODED.. SOMETIMES I CANNOT BITE MY TONGUE .. I LOSE CONTROL.. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES ABOUT RELIGION.. I'M NOT THAT RELIGOUS BUT I'M VERY JEALOUS ON MINE..
ANYWAY I GUESS I HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO HOLD MY TONGUE.. INSHA ALLAH I'LL DO ..
AS I SAID IN MY E-MAIL THERE SHOULD BE A BENEFIT FROM GAINING POINTS .. SO THE MEMBER WILL BE AFRAID TO LOSE HIS POINTS IF HE HAS BEEN BLOCKED AND CAN HAVE TO CREATE ANOTHER NEW ACCOUNT (INCASE HE CHANGED HIS IP ADDRESS) OR IT WILL BE VERY EASY FOR HIM TO BE BLOCKED THEN LOG ON AS ANONYMOUS N CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT N DO THE SAME THING AGAIN.. HE DIDN'T LOSE ANY THING..
ANYBODY AGREE WITH ME?

Sometimes its fun ...to josh with these idiots but it only demeans Qatar Living by doing so. QL is a great site and it has helped many many people.
If we are to maintain the integrity of this site, we need to do what Qatari suggests.
Like Dweller, I have to learn to bite my tongue.

Need some control mechanism ...Thank you qatari for taking such step to remind all that we all have to work as a group to keep QL clean, nice & helpful for other people. Its unfortunate to be abused by a small number of people.
From my point of view, i do agree with Qatari & Hassen Rathore that we need to ignore these people along with marking these as "abused" or even deleting the thread or providing a list of the persons who are continuously abusing for marking those people out or even banning them.
I hope that the abuse was not intentional & everyone will be cautions about it in future.

k i, no offence meant to you.... ...or to anyone that has been a member for less than amonth, as everyone is allowed their say here, but please make a note that you have not really been a member long enough to make any kinds of judgements on the people that use this forum.
Most of us are legitamate users and are here to meet, chat, offer advise and have fun, so I don't believe that Qatari was meaning any of us that are veteran users of QL, as we are well aware of why we are here and what this site is for.
Of late however, our nice, friendly forum has been disrupted by people that have been soliciting themselves, soliciting for women/men, bragging about cars they are driving, shooting dogs that come near them(and lets not forget the owners with the dogs), people disrespecting anyone that even tries to counter what the poster has said, so basically rude and arrogant behaviour from NEW users especially.(I don't mean ALL new users)
We all would like our forum to go back to the nice friendly, informative site that it always was.

Qatari & QL veterans ...I just wanted to say thank you.
I joined a couple of weeks ago and have found the site, in the main, to be very interesting and informative.
It's sad that in recent days some destructive anti-social elements have taken it upon themselves to be so abusive and offensive.
Rest assured, they have 'outed' themselves for the type of people they are and I, for one, understand that the malevolent efforts of one or more individuals should not and does not reflect badly on the rest of the QL community.
Although, having said that, I am somewhat concerned that people who have English as a second, third or fourth language may not, initially. be so appreciative of the malicious intentions of the troll(s).
Anyway, to all the rest of you: thank you! I very much look forward to joining the 'real' (not just virtual) QL community in the near future and meeting some of you lovely people.

kudos to you, Qatari ...No offence taken, Xena ;-)
My day would not be complete if I can't log on to QL or share my "grain of salt" opinion on topics I felt strongly to. I learn from othe people's point of view but when you see posters/contributors make a mockery of how people spells, etc. it ruins the flow.
I admit I reacted (once) only when it comes to some I consider sensitive issues...but i promise to behave as well. Don't want to be tagged as a "troll", you know.
