Qatar : Summer as you've never known it!

jane01's picture

Jane Austin could have easily been living through the Qatar summer when she wrote

"What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance."

I can't begin to explain the heat here! I have no idea how people survived in this country before Samsung and LG start selling airconditioners en mass.

Let me try to give you an idea of this heat if you're lucky enough not to be in Doha right now:

  1. It's 11pm and I've just taken a shower. The sun has been down for about 5 hours now. When I turn on the cold water tap the water that comes out is uncomfortably hot. That's right - this is not water coming out of the water heater - this is water from the cold water tap. It's so hot from the sun that boiled the tanker that it stays in during the day (5 hours ago!)

  2. If I walk out of an airconditioned lobby with my sunglasses on they will immediately steam up (you won't believe it until you experience it!)
  3. If I walk from the car park to the office block I feel as if I just took a shower - I'll be drenched in perspiration.
  4. If I walk outside right now (at 11pm) it is hotter than any English summer midday I've ever experienced (even the heatwave)
  5. I have four airconditioners on in the house and I am still breaking a sweat.

Most people (who can) take their holidays during the summer. Lucky them! I'm stuck with my hair always being out of place and my make up running!

I hear you Jane, but it is psychological as well. I went to Dubai in August last year, and it was more humid then Qatar. I thought, right, I’m either going to whinge about the weather for 14 days, or just put up with it and try enjoying myself. The latter worked. Every time I went outdoors I was soaking wet with sweat but somehow convinced myself that it wasn’t that bad...somehow it worked and I’ve been doing it ever since.....maybe it’s just me!

That Jane Austin sure could write elegantly.

And as for the weather here, it really isn't "hot" yet! That comes around August.

I was sitting in at the sheesha cafe at Souq Waqif last night, and despite it being 11pm sweat was beading on my forehead, and my lebanese friend had all but unbuttoned his shirt right down to his belt (although in truth he does that no matter where he is :p), and then, depsite the intolerable heat, it just started to lightly rain for a little while. It's kinda weird being hot and sweaty, in the middle of the night, all while it's trying to rain. If only it had rained enough to wash all the dust off my car!

In summertime most of us that have been living here for years, switch the use of taps. Eg. Switch off your water heater, and use the hot water tap for cold water, and cold water tap as the hot water.

That's really the only way.

We are only in May, and for May this weather is unusually hot. I think this summer is going to be one of the hottest in history. I've only experienced one this hot in Dubai, years ago. And it's NOT pleasant.

We fill up a big drum with water in the evening and use in for bathing in the morning and fill it up again for the after work shower.. it works though you have to have patience not to use the shower for the meantime, couldnt afford to burn my skin with water almost as hot as my coffee.

Scorpio, sometimes psychological really that MATTERS most.

Jane, have you seen those workers working in the middle of the day? They dont have anything to protect themselves but still get on with the heating sun >>> did you ask them what they did to endure the heat? They will tell you for sure "" NO CHOICE" we are here in Qatar so just enjoy the "BAD" weather until September i guess.

pwb78 said Bath Cool - water tank fan ...

If anyone is interested - we bought this thing last summer and it's been one of the best purchases ever. I'll try my best to attach a picture but it's a fan that sucks all the hot air out of your water tank and dramatically cools off the water. The water isn't COLD but it's so much cooler it's unbelievable. After 2 summers of scorching water, we decided to buy one. It's also movable if you change villas.

cmcpherson said From Snow to Heat ...

I am new in Doha and arrived a few months ago from snow in Canada to what I call very hot. Everyone warned me when I got here it was going to get much hotter. Well I still can't believe the temperatures outside. I keep telling myself that I will adjust, but so far I find the heat almost unbearable. I love Doha so the sacrifice is worth it. The question is will I survive this?
