I was reciting this verse today.. Nothing can comfort like a night prayer can..subhanallah..
"Their sides draw away from (their) beds, they call upon their Lord in fear and in hope, and they spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them.
So no soul knows what is hidden for them of that which will refresh the eyes; a reward for what they did."

Welll, nothing is definite in this regard. The mystery of the letters in the first verses of some suras is not exactly revealed.. some people have mathematical theories and stuff like that…Some says it symbolizes the challenge that even though this book is introduced through a human language composed of simple letters like these, no human have the ability of presenting something that unique. especially back then.. you know how people were living and all..
I don’t know Nigel what they stand for.. But I like the music they make :-).. and I truly believe that they stand for something undiscovered.

The sura begins with three letters - "A L M" in English. I was asking whether they had a special meaning.

surah sajdah ...the three letters according to my ustaz here in nigeria should not be interpreted by anyone.He argues that only Allah SWT knows the meaning of the letters.I love your postings Aisha.Barakallah fih.
