Don't waste your money or time at the American Dental Centre

I had recently come to Qatar from Canada and I was receiving orthodontic treatment. I went to to the "American Dental Centre" to finish the last 5 months of treatment, which is basically changing a wire, and a few elastics, my dentist in Canada said each (elastics and wire) came up to the sum of $10 canadian which is about 30 QR.
After being shocked that the orthodontist wasn't American or educated in North America I was much more shocked by the price being offered for the monthly change of wire which was 500QR!!! That works out to $170 per treatment when in Canada I was paying about $95. He also said somewhere in the thousands for the retainer I would need afterwards.
Anywho, I found another Dental Centre that offers ortho-treatments for 100QR each and 600QR for the retainer.
My suggestion look around and if you know people talk to them before paying any insane unreasonable prices.

Dear Amira, First let me ...Dear Amira,
First let me start by sympathising with you,I'm sorry for the unpleasant experience at the ADC, but if you allow me to explain a few things may be this would help you better understand the rationale behind the high dental prices in Qatar.
1-Orthodontic treatment is one of the most expensive dental procedures that is actually still considered as a luxurious procedure in most communities even in the US and Canada (it's not even covered by insurance)
2-Dentistry in Qatar is still considered a virgin field that is still being explored by many people, people were never used to going to private doctors in this country as the governement used to provide the best service available, but now that the governement is facing serious problems with re-organizing the HMC which will actually take sometime, private dentists now are busier than they have ever been...this is their prime.
3-Dental materials and instruments in Qatar are much more expensive than Cocaine...I'm not kidding, each dental center has to provide their own dental lab, and as far as i know there are no public dental labs in Qatar that could provide service to other dentists.
I don't know if you will accept my advice but when it comes to medicine and dentistry in particular, watch out...there are so many people who claim they have the experience and the knowlege while they actually don't know no nothing about this field.
Don't make the money your main concern when considering which dentist you should be followed up by, i understand money is an issue but the main issue should be that you get treated in the best way...not the cheapest way.
I am not saying that the one for Qr.100 is not as good as the one for Qr.500 , but just look for the education of your dentist and how you feel about the overall picture.
My above mentioned advice was just general without refering to anyone in particular.
I totally agree with you that private doctors in this country need to be re-evaluated and monitored by the governement.
I get so many complaints at HMC from private dentists who have messed up people's teeth and charged them fortunes.
You are most welcomed to contact me for any advice regarding your case at dentical75/-a-t-/yahoo.com

Hi Dentist, I certainly ...Hi Dentist,
I certainly appreciate your comment, and hope in no way that my blog would be advising individuals to go for the cheapest treatment available, that was definately not my intention. I am just bringing to light that when there is treatment being offered by many other dentists/orthodontists who are doing the same quality of work, why should an individual pay so much more?
Now you are right even in North America there are varying prices for braces from $6000 to $2500; however, as I expressed, the dentist I had selected in Canada told me the average prices for elastics and wires was appox. $10. So, I certainly did my research in Canada and had various consultations and finally settled on my orthodontist who was priced right in between. I also made sure to check reputation in the respective community etc.etc.
Thu,s the only reason I had immediately taken up treatment at ADC was because I felt that it would be an "American" treating me, who would have the same essential theories and practice as a Canadian orthodontist, thus making me feel more comfortable about finishing my treatment in a foreign country. Although that was not the case.
So...the blog is to help fellow expatriates understand that this is the exact same situation as in Canada or the States, or wherever, you will find highly over-priced services that may be just that...over priced. Do take care to look for someone who you feel comfortable with and like I said in the original blog talk to people there are tons of individuals who are getting ortho treatment and not paying an arm and a leg for it, that have been quite pleased with there treatments and results.
***Just a note the orthodontist at the ADC said that retainers were sent to a lab and that's why the price was set when I asked him a couple months later again how much the retainer would be he changed the price, He said "did I tell you 500QR for top and bottom", when in actuality he said it would something like 1000 for top and 2000 for bottom, thus after 4 months of being with ADC I decided to look for a new orthodontist here.
Thank you again for educating myself and others on the current dental situation here in Qatar it is certainly handy information.

Hello Amira, Yes you are ...Hello Amira,
Yes you are totally right about price contradictions.
Dentistry is a "Service" kind of profession where each one can estimate their value according to how good they think they are.
Unfortunately are not smart enough to realise that they should have a fixed Range of prices (you can never have the exact same price for the same service as it differs according to the patient's case)...but I say a fixed price Range would be smart to consider.
The ADC owner is not an American by the way,she is a Polish who has studied in the US,your orthodontist I guess was Lebanese or Syrian something like that, so I am afraid to say the ADC is only American by name not by nationality.
I hope now you are pleased with your current orthodontist...so by the way, could you please let us know who is your current orthodontist since you have mentioned the bad guys i guess it would be fair enough to give credit for the good ones.

hello, I will put the name ...hello,
I will put the name of the dental centre where I am receiving treatment, but I just want to caution all that you should definately look around for someone YOU feel comfortable with or have been referred to by someone you know. I am presently going to Al Razi dental clinic, the fees I am paying are 200QR per wire/elastic change the other that is offering 100QR/change I didn't choose simply because of the location, but it may suit someone else.
However, to each their own there are tons of orthodontists in Doha and very rarely will you find them charging 500QAR/month. Another word of advice is someone may go to the same dentist and be charged more depending on the complexity of their case, which you noted above and is important to take into account.
Most people found the 500QAR charge quite jaw-dropping so that wouldn't be the norm...I am guessing.
I wish others better luck.

Well a typical orthodontist ...Well a typical orthodontist will train for 9+ years, during which time he/she may not be earning any real money at all, but ending up as a highly qualified professional.
There might be queues at Carrefour, but orthodontists (especially here) won't typically have the door being kicked down. Think what you expect their salary to be, multiply by two (let's say, to cover overheads), assume they work for 11 months a year /-a-t-/ 40 hours/week and let's say they get one patient an hour ... this calculation should give you a guide to what a reasonable consultation fee would be ...
If you ask an architect to spend 3 hours to design your dream home would you calculate the cost of graphite & tracing paper?!?!
Some places are better than others - ask around for a recommendation
