Dress Code - Part II
Well I'm fed up.
Has anyone seen the boards in the City Centre that advise everyone to dress appropiately?
I'm fed up...
I cannot stand this qatari fashion anymore. I had it. From now on I dress my way. After all, in Europe everyone can dress according to their culture and background. Why can't we do the same here?
This is discrimination.
In Dubai a girl can wear shorts or little skirts or funky tops, or cool low cut jeans, no problem.
But here...
...It's so boring...
Everyday the same loose dark ugly clothes. We may as well bake like roasted chickens in summer, but our legs need to be covered.
From now on I will wear whatever I want. I don't care.

Super7 you have hit the nail ...Super7 you have hit the nail on the head. In the days of the QGPC (now QP) Falcon Club we received repeated complaints from an overzealous arab that men were walking round in the showers with no clothes on. I seem to recollect that we suggested to him that he shouldn't go in the shower if he was offended.

O.K. Guys... let me try and ...O.K. Guys... let me try and explain. Its a religious thing not a guy thing. Muslim men are not allowed (technically) to walk round naked infront of other guys. In fact, the area not allowed to be exposed is between the navel and knee (for men). Only exception is infront of your wife.
Dweller, i find it really unusual that QP has communal showers here. There arent even any in prisons here.

But come on girl, try to be nice, I’m sure you are so , in reality.

Butterfly, there isnt an ...Butterfly, there isnt an official dress code. Just use your common sense... if youre off to the mall youre obviously not going to dress like you were going out clubbing or the beach. Yes.. youre right... this isnt europe as europe is now. But it is like what europe was less than 100 years ago. You just have to accept that it is a very conservative and religiously driven society... when in rome, do as the romans.
Dubai was much like doha less than 10 years ago. But change is inevitable and it will change here. Progress stops for noone.
You will never get arrested for what you wear, but expect to be stared at, touched up or (as ive seen with my own eyes) attacked by a over zealous local lady with her shoe.
Just out of interest, next time you go out to the mall in a mini skirt and crop top, i would be interested to know how people reacted. please keep us updated :)

Qatargirl - yes. ok no-one ...Qatargirl -
yes. ok no-one stopped me but it says in any qatari guide that you should dress according to the local culture. How would you feel if you went to england and you had to dress as british standards?. You would feel that's unfair. You would want to stick to your own culture, wouldn't you?. Yes. It is natural. I was very upset when france banned headscarf in french schools because that goes against diversity. I felt sorry for girls in france that could not wear whatever they felt confortable with. Everyone should have the right to dress however they like.
Aisha -
What makes you so angry about me not being happy with the way I have to dress here. I don't think I have ever been rude to you or to any qatari. Perhaps we have different notions of what being rude really is. Please can you tell me when I have not respected you???? I would never insult anyone.
I didn't know that miniskirts was such a delicate issue so I won't bring it back again.
Do my posts really break your heart? I am very happy to be a new mother and I am happy to be jobless for the time being. I'm not happy about being in Qatar but that's something I can deal with. What is so heartbreaking about that?

The other critical point ...The other critical point butterfly and I imagine this is more true in the UK than in Spain is that I wish some of the women would cover up more in the summer.
I once postulated the theory that size and tightness of clothes worn by women was inversely proportional to their weight and lack of tan.
The sheer quantity of pale white bellies exposed thanks to mid rift T shirts and horrible blubbery, orange peel thighs displayed thanks to mini skirts makes me plead for a more modest culture.
However if tanned and toned give me mid rifts and mini skirts any day!!
getinandstayin said
Its actually a woman not ...Its actually a woman not seeing a woman and a man not seeing a man thing aswell. For women its a little more to be covered. Its basically rooted in modesty and preserving these ethical boundaries. Whether you agree or not, some boundaries are needed or else things get out of hand and boundaries are redrawn continuously until everyone ends up walking round naked. You may think that isnt a bad thing :) but others may beg to differ.
Some men may be a little apprehensive and insecure to see you in all your naked masculinity boldly striding into the showers with your bar of soap LOL

Funny though because in UK if someone covers up (like wearing swimming trunks in the showers) everyone thinks he is a little weird.
We had a German guy at our rugby club and he always wore swimming trunks in the showers after the game. We thought he was slightly odd anyway (german) but the swimming trunks thing made us assume that either the steroids he took had had side effects (he was very muscular and worked out a lot) or he was gay.

I am annoyed about the culture not respecting how others dress. Therefore a sign in the Citi Center advising everyone to dress appropiately is not right. I'll dress as I'd like and everyone should respect me for that.
No one should be looking on down to me if I ever decide to wear a miniskirt here. It should be respected as any other culture. That's what diversity is all about.
I hope one day this will be understood. THat's all.

If a pigmi from Africa walked around a shopping mall in the UK naked as he often would in the bush he would be arrested and escorted from the shop because many would be offended (children etc).
Should we respect his right to dress as he does at home or should he cover up and dress for the culture he is in?

Maybe in a few months everyone will be wearing miniskirts! that should be fun.
Wonder how it would be if Carrefour in Paris puts a sign asking everyone to respect the local culture and dress only with the latest fashion.
Everyone should dress however they like, that was my point. The local culture has to accept that there are other cultures that do not share (I mean share, not "respect") their values. Modesty is not a value I share, so why should I be asked to dress modestly?

While I was in Doha, I made the mistake of wearing quite a revealing top in a shopping mall and I was made to feel most uncomfortable with all the stares I was attracting......
Knowing this, I still want to come back to Qatar, however this time, I am more aware of what is acceptable and what is not..... and I will definately be more sensitive to the local customs and dress more conservatively.
Once again..... it comes back to when in Rome, do as the Romans do... or rather, when in Qatar, do as the Qatarians do....lol......

I don't know how girls ...I don't know how girls manage to wear scant clothes in Qatar in the summer anyhow! If you don't cover up, you burn outside, and freeze to death indoors with the A/C on! I always have my jacket on in the mall in the summer, and long trousers, it's just too cold otherwise. And if I don't cover my shoulders, arms and legs outside then I am attacked by the sun! So well I don't complain against the modest dress code :^)
And Butterfly, I didn't find any of your posts or comments offensive. I guess it has to do with me being a fellow Mediterranean! :^) We just have totally different views and approaches, it seems.

Dear all, I feel sad that ...Dear all,
I feel sad that there are men/women who do not wear anything in front of other men/women. That is a problem.
Men & women in Qatar, please let us wear clothes that are not tight nor revealing. If you are not a Muslim, please be patient while being in a Muslim country. You come hear to make money & learn another culture, religion & language. You come here to experience another part of the World.

Textile engineers could make ...Textile engineers could make clothes more comfortable. The planet is being heated due to the global warming. Let us take care of our skins. Let us not let others see us in a sexual way.
Still, others do not have the right to see us in a sexual way even if we did not dress properly.
