GOING, GOING, GOING....GONE????

butterfly's picture

Guys,

I'm so exited! You know I've never leart to enjoy my life here in Qatar.

There is a posibility that I will be leaving soon. My husband has been offered a job elsewhere. But there's a catch. He's not being offered enough money so he's trying to negociate a better salary.

You know how it is...

If they accept what he's proposing, then I'll be gone!!!!

Please wish me luck and pray for me.

Will let you know how it goes

Hey butterfly,

I have been reading yr posts offlate, when i started to search for info about this country. What I find is you have developed an affinity for Qatar.

Can u pls. highlight what attracted you so much in a place with overcrowded streets , rash drivers, sky rocketting rentals ( this is what I read here).

I have got a job offer and am considering to move there. I was comparing this place with Dubai (where I got another job offer) and am not able to conclude anything. Any suggestions pls?

Right Safwany! Siddh nothing "attracted" me to Qatar. We though that we would come here for a financial gain, but unfortunately my husband's employer was not very honest and understanding. So not even that.

Personally I prefer Dubai. But go with whoever pays you more.

Hi Butterfly...thanks for clarification.....on yr reply that I should join whoever pays me more.....i should share something with you which is funny....

To make my decision lil more complicated, both the employers are offering somewhat the same salary, rather Qatar one is marginally higher....would u like to comment something in this perspective?

One last thing...can u pls highlight what are the issues that disturbed you most during yr stay in Qatar?

butterfly's picture

butterfly said wow, that's a difficult ...

wow, that's a difficult decission. If you have small kids, then best to stay in Doha, Dubai is gone crazy.
In my opinion, rents are higher in Doha.
Entertainment options much much better in Dubai.
Dubai's culture is much more open and flexible than Qatari. But also more cynical and frivolous.

Probably what disturbes the most about living in Doha is my flat, which is very very small and noisy and smelly (yup, nasty smells coming from the pipes all year long!). But I should consider myself lucky, 3500 for a 1bed flat right in the center of town is very very good deal.

Also going from A to B in Doha is challenging when streets are not "walkable", I cannot take the car most days and finding a taxi is impossible.

I'm also death bored of going to the same places again and again. Dubai is better cos it's got nicer beaches and more parks and enterteinment.

And also my husband's work. It's all WORK WORK WORK - no life - for him.

Siddh? Why did you add Sheebu to your buddy list...???

Do you know her? Do you know Muhajid?

siddh said Hey butterfly...u r ...

Hey butterfly...u r cool....thanks for honest reply. I was guessing Doha will have probs like this as it is a new city and appears to be developing without proper planning. I got a taste of it at Doha Intl. airport in Jan when I was travelling to Delhi. The airport is worse than any domestic airport of a developing country! Hence I started discussing in this forum.

On the rent issue , you will be shocked to know that I pay only SR 1500 (= QR 1500) for a 3BR villa here in Saudi. I know I have to forego that in my quest for a metropolitan lifestyle. I too am sick of this place where we have to go round the same place again & again (absolutely no entertainment here). I came here for financial gains but got sick of being confined indoors for sake of bank balance! I have a kid 3 yrs old, who needs outdoor activities.

But Dubai has equally worse problem as far as housing is concerned. I am told that a 1BR would cost 5K AED. I am in a real fix, added to it the company & work profile at Doha are better than one at Dubai.

I do not know Sheebu. I am new to the forum & thought she is an Indian. I do not know the rules of adding buddies. Apologies I have offended/confused anyone.

Cheers

Siddh,

For sure you will see an improvement from Saudi if you move to Qatar. Qatar/Dubai? it's a very difficult choice, but just think that whichever you go for, it will far better than Saudi.

Don't worry about Sheebu, it's all a joke...You haven't offended anyone.

best of luck in yr new place. keep writing

its gonna be some how Racist, but what i hate about this country, is that there are millions of Indians and bngali's and pakistani' who make you forget how to speak english, i hate saying so, but come on, wh have to communicate how the hell is the english that thes people use....

siddh's picture

siddh said Noname....I agree with you ...

Noname....I agree with you that some of the Asians do not speak good English. The reason is it is a foreign language for them as it is for many Europeans!

Do u think all Europeans are fluent in English? I have seen so many Italians, French & Russian whose English is equally lousy? Not to boast about myself (I am an Indian), but in few occasions Frenchmen found my English vocabulary too strong for them to digest. It happened with some Turks also, who proclaim they are partly European!

FYI, there is a spelling error in the word ‘obvious’ in yr posting above.

butterfly said Actually, indians, generally ...

Actually, indians, generally speaking, speak excellent english, that's why british companies put their "call centres" in India.

Well, also, cos is cheaper for them...

You're right, Siddh, a good percentage of europeans don't speak english. In Spain no-one does!

siddh i know its wrong, looool , its from talking with Indians (no really am kidding) no offense, but i know you know a lot of vocabs, but no accent

siddh's picture

siddh said thanks for agreement. it all ...

thanks for agreement. it all depends on usage. english is very widely used in India and again accent gets localised. strictly speaking no one knows which is the correct accent. Brits accent is supposed to be correct as it is their language after all. but, Americans choose to be different......within US the southern accent is different again!

French, Chinese, Japs accent are each apart from mainstream accent. I will be glad if someone challenges the Americans or Frenchs for their improper accent.

anyway, let the show go on...........hope you come across some good quality Indians some day (very few of this lot come to Gulf, even if they do,they restrict themselves to UAE).

Sorry for being reactive.

look, i love India and i really love its culture, and i found many Indians that are educated and really good quality people, India is a nice country and its people are really nice and kind.
you know, you can't generalize things, you can meet people who are good and others who are bad.
I respect your people as i do respect you.
take care

Ingesu said Butterfly, Is it for sure?? ...

Butterfly,

Is it for sure?? Como que te vas??? I am sure you are going to really miss it here... ha ha ha. Seriously, I know you are looking forward to leave Qatar but I hope you have some nice memories from the place. For me it has been also horrible here, but it's getting better. I certainly appreciated your honesty, because before coming here I got a real insight of the real life here and not just the bubble expat chat where everybody is "happily ever after", no way! I am so glad I found this site because it has made my life easier, believe it or not. Since I was expecting it worst than it is, it has been sort of a relief, ha ha. And I also found useful to realise with your blog that perspectives change if you give yourself and the place a chance.

And changing the topic, regarding English accents, I couldn't care less. I recently had a very bad experience with an 'innocent' kid molesting my child. I pulled him off that place, but don't want to make a fuss about in case the kid is really 'innocent'. I don't care about a perfect English but about a proper care. Luckyly I got him a spot in a school very near to my house and I am happy. Unfortunately the kid of the conflict will be in the same school as my kid next year. And no, it was not a qatari or arabic or indian or srilankan, it was an american!!! sad, really sad but worst to be paying for a non-caring daycare.

Anyway, leaving that ugly topic aside and back to the accents, I actually find great to have Indian people around because they are polite and respectful. And in fact we are planning to visit India again, once our visa is settled. Accent wise, I was living in Houston for couple of years and there I really had trouble understanding. Now I got the nice strong hispanic accent from the tex-mex people, so what?
I guess it's just a matter of getting used and rely more on the body language... unfortunately here with the local ladies it is difficult or impossible because you can never see their facial expressions. And one has also to learn the gestures! As in every country there are differences and I found extremely irritant that gesture they make as a sign to 'let me talk' or 'wait wait'... now that I know what it means I don't get so upset...

Well, this was like three or four messages in one, but since I have been enormously busy settling down I guess I just took the chance to wish Butterfly all the best, and keep in touch!

Take care

I for one am thrilled that I'll be returning to a country where at least 90% of the population speaks english. Even if it is hard to understand sometimes, it's still music to my ears, after Russia.
Thank goodness my italian heritage has been useful for something! I can tell you, I would have been REALLY lost if I didn't have hand-gesturing in my blood! :)
