The Qatar Police
I had the most unexpected but pleasant experience the other evening. I was out doing some shopping in Landmark and returned to the parking lot to find my car battery dead!. Aaargh! My predicament looked pretty bleak...it was late at night and the car was parked facing a wall so it wouldn't be easy to jump start it - that is, if I could find someone with jumper cables who would help me...
Just then I saw a Qatar Police patrol car drive past. I ran up to them (not thinking that they were going to be helpful but thought that it was worth a try) and knocked on the drivers window. He rolled it down and I said my battery was dead. He laughed and then said "No problem". Now I wasn't expecting that sort of reaction - I figured I'd get a shrug or some sort of story about it not being his job. Instead, I got two cops pushing my car out of the bay so they could get it next to there patrol car in order to jump start it!
They then jump started it and helped me on my way.
This was truly service with a smile! Thanks Qatar Police!

Bravo!! ...Qatar Police also changed the flat tyre of one of my friend's car. That was the middle of August and they asked my friend to stay away from the Car and did it by their own..We made a call later to the police headquarters with the help of an Arab Colleague and thanked them. The two officers on duty were identified and our thank-you-sir note was conveyed to them.In fact if you approach the police with any problem on the road..they are found helpful...

Police ...These guys are mostly what you'd term "good old boys".
They don't have a superiority complex usually associated with gun toting officials in the world.
Enjoy it while it lasts. The country is changing and evenntually so will they. For the moment they reflect what the Qataris are really like; easy-going, approachable and down to earth.
Believe me when I say that. I know the other countries of the Gulf very well.

I agree ...I agree with you e46M3, the police in Saudi would never change a tire or give you a jump.

They love babies, too ...at least, those stationed outside our compound who greet my baby everytime we go out in the morning. It's consoling to know the Qatari police are above all ordinary humans.

actually..with the exception ...actually..with the exception of saudi and kuwaiti police forces..i've found other police officers around the GCC region to have the same friendly attitudes their Qatari neighbours do. At least compared to where I come from..where officers are only nice to you if you offer them some cash.

I dunno, I am still ...I dunno, I am still prejudiced I guess. I would like to like them but when I see the mess police officers create at round-abouts while trying to regulate traffic I want to shoot them. Police back home is way more efficient with the traffic.

Disagree..before I think of ...Disagree..before I think of anything negative about efficiency...I would like to stand in the sun in August to get a feel of how efficient it is in impossible conditions...The problem is with the design of round-about system..not with the people trying to make some sense out of it...I would love to be critical of the folks who thought about this system sitting in air-conditioned comfort.....and to think that all new developments still show round-abouts in their masterplans..is horrible to say the least....

how would it be otherwise ...the mess is not the police's fault really. round-abouts by nature cause congestion in high traffic areas. their just fighting a loosing battle trying to regulate traffic there. until the "ashghal" department replaces the round-abouts with traffic lights, you'll continue to be upset and congested :o)

Yes well blah blah. Hot or ...Yes well blah blah. Hot or not, they are still incompetent with the traffic at the R/As. Today they achieved a perfect block of the Decor R/A.
And don't argue with me or I'll shoot you too!

It sure is, TG. And yes you ...It sure is, TG. And yes you are right about dumb road planning and it's not policemen's fault they have to deal with imbecile drivers on the R/As. But a PERFECT standstill on my way to work???

Hey.... Have had a good ...Hey....
Have had a good experience with the Qatar Police also....
I was waiting outside the Qatar National Theatre for a taxi yesterday... and everyone I tried to wave down just kept driving.... The cops pulled up and had were obviously watching and after a few taxis just pasted, the cop saw another one approach and got out of his car to stop him.... Unfortunately, when I approached the taxi, he said he was going to an appointment and he couldn't drop me off where I had to be.... Another taxi stopped shortly after that and could take me.....
Anyhow.... was so good to have the assistance from the cop... and I felt totally safe standing on the road waiting....

Qatari police ...I've only been in Qatar for 6 months, but I couldn't miss noticing how friendly and unpretentious Qatari policemen are.
For instance, I was walking down the souq area with a Greek friend of mine, and we asked 2 traffic cops for directions to a particular souq. The cops apologised their English was not very good, and they were as friendly as the friendliest person in his friendliest day (probably the reasons they were that friendly was because we used a couple of Arabic phrases - too much appreciation was given for our little efforts, and also because they liked Yunan football team & music!!!)

Good for you ...But I wonder if they will do the same to...let's say "third country nationals", like Indians, Filipinos, Nepalis and the like?
It seems that most people who posted good things about Qatari Police are "white people".
I dont want to sound prejudiced, but please prove me wrong!

Qatari Police ...Just today the Qatar police helped me jump start my car at LuLu Hypermarket. They went out of their way to help me (as they probably would back home in Australia too). I am white.
I think car batteries need to have water added quite regularly because of the heat.

Gratitude - Lesson ...Yeah gracious, When the media world projects wrong images about the attitudes of the east in the west, the white race always have a superiority complex that sort of a high nose attitude but now the white race learnt.. a lesson that all are human beings.... Appreciate it and show some mutual reciprocity in the west too particularly the UK & South Africa & Australia have a high handed racist mentality towards the Asians and the middle Eastern youth...

We can see many many plus ...We can see many many plus points and on Qatari Police ...not only Police..but also the citizens. But as you said... Many times I had bad experiences from Qatari polices. The way of dealing is depends on colour/nationality....I will tell some experience
1.Once there was a fire at Souq Haraj..Police were at area after fire set. I and my friend were in a restaurant 5hours after the fire set. We were going to take the car from parking (Not near to firelocation..300-500mts away). But the police man was blocking us and shouting. we both can see the car 5-10 meters infront of us. We show him and say "that is our car..we will just take it nd go..." He shouted again and agin and saying you cant go this direction. But the fire location is more than 300-500meter from there and car is infront of us. But the same time a white man is going same direction (more far than our parked car ) without any objection and the police man was just giving good smile to him. we waited there around 30 minutes. after that he given permission..... This is what kind of standard?
2. Every leave days.. I cant enter Corniche, Souq... Police stopping. But infront of us I can see many white coloured people going forward without any objection...

Gotta give them credit for ...Gotta give them credit for standing in the middle of those round-abouts(war zone) trying to guide traffic in excessive heat.....

My only question about the ...My only question about the round-about cops is their builds. I find it funny, but the traffic cops at the round-abouts either seem to be the skinniest people on the force or the shortest and pudgiest, usually paired together. I wonder why that is? I rarely see "normal" build traffic police.

Police ...There are exceptions but most police officers become police officers because they have a desire to help society. They continue in their career because that desire remains, even though it is often a thankless job!
