Is Qatar a good place to raise a young family?

My family and I are thinking of relocating. Is Qatar in general a good place to raise a young family? Are there good job opportunities for my spouse? I have a 4 year old son who is currently attending Pre-K and a spouse who has a degree in Food Science. Will both my son and spouse be able to find something to do there?

Very family oriented ...Qatar is a great place to raise a family. The Qatari's are very family orientated so you'll find lots of things designed to families (such as family parks and family days at the malls).
You'll often see families picnicing on the Corniche in the evenings.

Job opportunities ...I'm not sure what the scope for Food Science (maybe the bird flu threat has increased demand?) but generally spouses of Western expatriates manage to find work easily. There are a lot of opportunities for teachers (especially for people who speak English first language - even if their degree isn't in teaching), administrators and with the upcoming Doha Asian Games 2006 lots of jobs have been created in a wide variety of fields.
The economy is booming - this has also helped the job market.

Not to burst your bubble but... ...It's true that Qatar is very family oriented in terms of culture but for 'family things to do' it is very limited. The Corniche is about the only place that one might be able to go (in the non-humid cooler season October - May). The desert is great but is difficult to fit into a normal weekly outing. There's a few malls where you can get everything you can in the west (well almost). No real museums, good bookshops, or kids entertainment complexes. All of this is coming but you should be prepared for the negative side of it until it develops. There are a few expat clubs which are nice (e.g. Natural History Group).
But Qatar has a lovely small-town-feeling and the Qatari's are warm and friendly - a good place for a family and I quite love it for those reasons.

Family orientated and safe ...Qatar is definitely very family orientated and safe. There are parks to visit on weekends and all the shopping centres have entertainment areas for children. expatriates usually organise playgroups and other activities for kids.
There are also many schools to choose from(including some American schools).
You must remember that Qatar is a small country with a small population (only 800 000 people) - this means that it's sort of like living in a small town (but with all the big city amenities).

It depends on what you want ...It depends on what you want as a single... Qatar has a big expat community and all the things that go along with that.

I'm single in my late ...I'm single in my late 30's.
My experience has been- "I've never felt more single than now"
Qatar is family orientated, very difficult for me as a female to buy car/ get house, etc. Salesmen simply assume we are imbeciles??
I find dining out/ coffee out on my own difficult.
Men tend to be hostile or their approach inapprpriate.
I have enough friends to keep me occupied- but again, when they are with their families- there are a limited number of activities one can do.
I'm outgoing-I do desert drives, go to beach, work-out and clubs- but so so limited
And yes-meeting places for singles are UNHEARD OF.
Single males that I know- drink a lot and are always at bars.
The one male we danced with- his first 4 months, he used to cry- I swear- cry tears.
It was hard in the beginning, I'm finding it easier- but I would go another place anytime.

OK.. thats it... i would ...OK.. thats it... i would like to propose that all us single people (and alone married people) do something about this. The biggest problem we have is finding other similar people to just hang out with.
Is anyone interested in forming some kind of cooperative :) ? there must be loads of us out there who would welcome the company of like minded people to just have coffee with... maybe a shopping partner....
I am willing to host a ice breaking gathering if theres enough interest.
Its about time we stopped whinging about it and did something constructive.
Im copying this post to a new topic.

We have single friends ... most of them said the life for single in Doha is boring compare to another country.

I would like to ask you some more question if you dont mind me asking:
Can you pay monthly rent in Doha or you have to pay every 3 or six months in advance?
What is the minimum rental contract ?eg : 6 or 12 months?
Could you please also give me some advice about deposite ?is it effected by wheter the property is furnished or unfurnished?
Is there any municipality charge? If so, does it included within the rent?
Thank you in anticipation

I shall be one of your first customers for the "club", you have to think of a catchy name.
I drink coffee strong no sugar, and as for the shopping its always interesting getting the male perspective on that (to die for) dress, do you know where I can get my nails done? do they wax ? eye brow plucking? do I wear opened toed shoes to work? ohh you opened a new forum for me :-) lol, do you get the Finacial times out there in tablet form, lol

Emilia, You pay monthly rent ...Emilia,
You pay monthly rent by post dated checques, but some owners they require 3 or 6 month in advanced if they give a better rate.
The minimum rental contract will depened on the number of bedrooms in a flat or a villa, you didn't specify what do you want.
About the deposite it is usually one month rent and it is for all even UF, SF or FF.
There is no municipality charges at all.

In respect of the original ...In respect of the original question. We found Qatar a great place to raise a family and that was before all the new facilities.
Our kids were so happy in Doha that one of them spent 23 years there and has only recently left.
In terms of arranged activities there isn't a lot but we used to spend every weekend at the beach or in the desert. make your own activities, don't expect it to be delivered on a plate.

Hmm I have always found that ...Hmm I have always found that women sharing together is pure misery. Lots of [Mod Removed]ey goings on and problems with who ate the others muesli
You are welcome to him. I am sure he is wonderful.
I don't want anywhere until Mid may anyway as that is when my rent runs out I am just getting all sorted now. So it will be all yours (BTW wouldn't your 11yo prefer a compound? normally loads more to do on them for kids - there are some good value ones around too)

the women sharing is quite a ...the women sharing is quite a true statement, I have a male lodger here, but we have a very good agreement I cook for him he irons for me (I detest ironing) he cannot cook
To be honest Im not 100% sure which would suit us the best, the compund suits better so he has some friends his own age but then hes going to school anyway and will meet people his own age he can speak 3 different languages so i dont think he will find it hard! as long as he has his mum :-)
weve been in Egypt and had no problems there at all, (as long as you can say Emshee) My son is an avid psp mp3 total gadget freak and both scuba and sea lovers so we will fill our time, but its also nice to have other people around as well
so we will wait for a few weeks and then decide which is best suited

thanks for the information ...thanks for the information regardiing complexes
I have given Ayman quite a list of have and have nots to share with,
A) the Woman /women have to be over a size 12 - so they cannot steal my clothes
B) have very small/huge feet any other sizes than 6 - so they cannot wear my shoes
C) no peroxide blondes - they give us naturals a bad name and all the jokes that go with that, lol
D) must be able to pluck eyebrows - im useless
E) must have a sense of humour
the list is quite long
but made in jest

Well I have a maid for ...Well I have a maid for ironing as I also despise it. I intend to get a maid for cooking next year as well because I am mostly too lazy to do that. And a maid for shopping because otherwise I never eat vegetables.
Well where you are looking at this villa (doha college) is right opposite the rugby club and they have a massive mini rugby thing every Sunday (or Monday?) with about 100 kids from 4 to 16 so that would be worth taking him down to.

I am an Indian and recently got an offer from a Qatari company. Can you tell me how much a single bedroom flat costs there and also any known locality of indians staying. Furnished/unfurnished. Also what obligations does a work visit visa have got? any idea about the exit permit and the process to get an exit permit?
