Flame war!

mohammed's picture

It's been a long time since I've seen a good flame war. This one is funny - it's between Rashed (a Qatari teenager) and James (a British expat living in Qatar) who are in the same school. Apart from it being juvenile and very teenage, I think it brings up some interesting tensions between expatriates living in the Gulf and the locals. It seems that beneath the civility there is some discord. Here's what happened:

Rashed finds James blog and reads that James wants to get out of Qatar

HAHAAA you guys!!! You see that kid that walks around school looking like frodo/harry potter?? Well apparently his name is james and he has a site!! ... Well in it, he keeps talking about how much he misses his girlfriend ... and how much he wants to leave qatar. So before he casts some magical spell on me that turns me into something even shorter than I am, I decided to be a bastard and TRY to scare him, so I pretended I'm a government official who's not so happy about what he says about Qatar....

Rashed freaks out James by posting in his comments

Sir,
Most of the content on your site is based on leaving Qatar and going back to The Netherlands because Qatar is not as good as you would like it to be. These thoughts are subliminally marked in the minds of the readers of the site as negative impressions of Qatar which in turn leads more people to like the country less and less each day.
In you next post, we wish that you state your approval of removing all anti-Qatar comments or in the case that you do not approve please provide us with a more efficient and confidential means of contacting you.
Please note, that we have enough information to know where you are at anytime of day in the case that you do not wish to co-operate with us, Mr. Wilson.

James figures it out and lashes out

Hey you short, fat, Qatari dumb ass … Yes that’s right Rashed I’m talking to you …You should spend more time on your crap site then trying to cook up poorly implemented attempts to ruin someone else’s. I must say I find it pretty funny your own friends are laughing at YOU for trying to do this to ME. …haha …

Ok, that’s enough of a reality check for you Rashed, don’t you see? I’m an English man with a life, friends, and has actually seen true life because I lived somewhere other than here … As for you … You’re only a short, fat, stupid, Qatari who hasn’t lived anywhere else and doesn’t know and never will know what it is to party, to live, to work, to have fun.

Rashed defends himself and his country

I lived in Qatar, Austria, Oman and The US (2 states). I only lived in Qatar for about 6 years out of 17. While you lived in England, ate fish and chips and pretended u knew what you were talking about. Btw, just cuz ur in MUN doesn't mean you actually LIVED in those places, that's just pretending you did, Harry.

Flame war continues
This goes on for a long time. Rashed then takes to Photoshopping pictures of James and his girlfriend! Ouch...

James finally ends it

I’ve had enough of Rashed’s childish and pathetic attempts to argue. He is really behaving like I would expect from a demented 3 year old. It is obviously pointless in providing sufficient evidence to prove he is completely and utterly wrong. As he doesn’t want to accept he is completly wrong about his own country, and a guy who has only been here 3 months was right. So this is the last time I will be commenting about his retarded behaviour and manner. That just proves that age doesn’t always reflect in maturity doesn’t it? I mean he’s a year older, yet he behaves like a child. I am a year younger, and I am not going to continue to argue with him, because what is the point in arguing with someone who is just doing to for arguments sake, and can’t admit they are totally wrong? I hope some maturity rubs off on Rashed. He will need it this year and then forever onwards, so I hope he picks it up pretty damn quick, for his sake as well as the rest of the people who have to be around him.

Message to Rashed and James : Keep the peace guys...

Rashed, you should register an account so your posts will always be in your name (and so that no one can impersonate you!)

It will also be great to see some blog posts here by you about life as a Qatari youth.

I don't want to get drawn into this flame war but I can say this. Qatar is different things to different people. I don't think it's as simple as it's either heaven or hell. It's a nice enough place if you have some money but just like any other place in the world, it could be better (for one thing, people could begin using their indicators when changing lanes).

I don't think you should take Jame's position personally. He's a teenager and most teenagers go through a being pissed off with life phase (especially if you listen to Nirvana) - in the West it's called "being at war with the world".

James, what happened to your blog? It seems to be offline...

Well if it's our fault, then how come all the new students aren't being treated the same way you are? There are there are lots of non-arabic speaking students who are really liked and that's becaused they mixed and "mingled" with the rest of the students. I could mention specific examples but I'd rather not do it here as I don't know what they'd feel about me mentioning them like this.

I hate to break it to you, but being the new kid means that you have to put in an effort to make friends, not the other way around. Listening to music all day and ignoring all the surroundings isn't the proper way.

Impersonating any government official is illegal? Which government official did I impersonate? Please tell me so I won't do it again.

Steve said Pure childish behavior ...

What I've noticed is this:
James is angry about leaving friends, school and home that he was comfortable with to come to Qatar.
Rashed seems to be the type to cause problems to make himself feel bigger and better than others.

James: Change comes often in life. You may not like it, but it's constant. The only time things stop changing is either when you're in a coma or when you're dead. Try looking at change as a challenege to work through or around. You'll find it's a lot more pleasant than boo-hooing in your room and bitching on a blog.

Rashed: Try HELPING others who have a problem. You'll find others respect you more in the end. You've been in a fair number of countries in your life so you should understand the culture shock and bewilderment of change. Frankly, if you were my son I would be ashamed of your behavior!

My experiences over the years has been that people are people no matter what nation they're in. Their culture dictates somewhat their behavior, but the same emotions and drives are present.
If you treat someone the way you wish to be treated, you soon find someone favourable to you and eventually a friend.
