Traffic in Doha

Is the traffic situation in Doha driving anyone else nuts? Doha was ideal for driving around - it was small, there are also multiple routes to any destination and if you could handle the "creative" driving it was generally quick to get around town.
Of course, this changed a few weeks ago - welcome to the world of road upgrades. When they closed the Airport round-about and the bottom end of C Ring, I spent three hours in traffic trying (unsuccessfully) to get to where I was going near Parachute round-about. The local newspapers were all over it the next day - the excuses were great:
- There are 45,000 new cars on the road (erm...weren't their 44,921 cars on the road the day before?)
- Everyone is out doing Ramadaan shopping (this is probably true but it could have hardly caused a three hour jam)
The situation is compounded by poorly marked "diverted traffic" signs. It took me over 30 minutes to find my way to Landmark Mall the first time I tried to go there at night after they closed the roads after the Gharrafa Interchange.
What is really funny is that every morning I drive to work on a stretch that is a few kilometres long. One half of the road has been closed and dug up (meaning that both sides of traffic have one lane each). There are about 10 (ten) guys working on the whole stretch. Yes, 10 whole people on that long stretch. You have to ask yourself, couldn't they have
a) closed off only part of the road at a time
b) staggered the upgrades over a longer period of time
c) provided more clearly marked "diverted traffic" signs
I know the Doha Asian Games 2006 is around the corner. I'm sure I'll be happy when there are new lanes. I'm not complaing about the fact that the roads need to be improved - I'm just saying that there has to be a less distruptive way to have done it.

Shortly after we moved to ...Shortly after we moved to the abdul aziz area, road works started in the feruq abdul aziz main road.
My husband and I told ourselves that we the amount of labour they had working in that road, the work would be completed in a couple of weeks, one month max.
Almost a year on, the road works seem nowhere near completion. This is ridiculus and embarrasing.
Most of the time, i see about 15 labourers on the road, but I rarely see them working. Often they are just sitting, hanging around, or 14 watch while the 15th does some work. Surely there must be some kind of manager somewhere that directs these workers???? Or someone who gets a wealthy amount of money to ensure that works are completed within a reasonable time period?
Do these laborers have their needs caterered for? Do they get a fair salary, good nutricious meals, proper health care, human living conditions??? . Do they get proper training to avoid accidents such as getting buried in the holes they dig?
If the answer is no, then someone needs to address these problems beforehand, otherwise they will never perform, and roads will be closed forever.
But if their basic needs are covered, then I would be pointing my finger at a very incompetent managment. If it keeps going at this pace, Doha will look like a big messy hole by december this year.

Butterfly I really do not ...Butterfly I really do not think that these workers have any skill in construction or anything. They are coming from third world countries for sake of employment and they pay fat money to get qatar visa from contractors but when they reach here, they find that they cannot get any salary for months!! Plus their salary is not more then 400-500 riyal I think.
They have no idea about safety or other issues involved or nor there are any standards. I mean authorities have no planning they are closing roads on raods and its a pain to get from point A to B.
Plus with all the construction going on can u imagine the amoutn of dust in the air, its really un healthy. If you clean you car one day and u check the next its covered with coating of dust. There is constrcution going on near where I live and the amount of pollution and dust its sometime nasty...arrrgghhh!!!!
Where are human rights, where are the islamic values...greed is taking over...there is a hadith by prophet pbuh that to pay the worker even before the sweat had dried. I guess no one is following laws in any sense.. :-(

unfortunately Qatar is ...unfortunately Qatar is trying to execute 15 years of infrastructure development in 2. Therefore, we are all going to suffer as a consequence. There are ways to maintain traffic flow whilst carrying out work but these are expensive and someone somewhere obviously thinks that our convenience isnt worth paying for.
There are more disruptions on the way and the situation is destined to get much worse before it gets any better.
I refuse to drive anywhere after sunset... its just not worth the hassle. Im seriously considering a motorbike but the way people drive, i will be dead inside a week.
One of the other problems is that there is such a shortage of labour and materials here for so much work that contractors are taking on work without adequate resources.

Many countries (including ...Many countries (including 3rd world nations) manage the road construction work in a better way. Look at how they do road work in Zambia or Brazil.

Excuse me, I come from Egypt ...Excuse me,
I come from Egypt which is not considered a rich country at all,but when it comes to construction....work gets done in the shortest time...you know why??? because labours in Egypt can't afford to sit their asses on the pavement for a minute...work goes on all around the clock...never stops until the whole construction is DONE.
I live in Mansoura are here in Doha where the streets are full of holes and they are just sooooo miserable...and when the city finally decided to pave them (i wish they never did) they just made it worse...now the streets are all dug everywhere and nothing is paved and instead of hole now we got bumps that could literally crack down your car.
I just hope that someone out there who really loves this country and cares for it and at the same time has the authority to make a change..i hope this someone can do something about this huge mess.
Doha could just be paradise if this whole mess wasn't there.

agree with dentist. I lived ...agree with dentist.
I lived more than 2 years in Alexandria in Egype 10 years ago. It was better than the Doha today, though Egypt was far from rich at that time. At least roads were paved.

Sometimes I just wonder; ...Sometimes I just wonder; could money be a curse rather than being a blessing??!!!!!
May be because those contractors come to Doha thinkink it's floating on oil and gas and budgets have no limit here, may be that's why they just don't give a damn to re-do their job over and over and over and over again, while they could just do it once and for all if they have someone who cares monitor them and question their quality of work.
YOu know the whole point of "when you are rich everybody wants to take advantage of you"!!!!!!!
