Qatar IS Blocking VoIP

yahya's picture
Posted in:

After contacting customer service today, I found out that Qatar is indeed blocking VoIP (including voice chat servers like MSN). This has been corroborated by several other sources at my place of employment and members of the Vonage forum. This is contrary to what customer service was telling us over the weekend: that the service outage was due to a loss of bandwidth. A QTel representativestold me that this is what they were told that they were as shocked as customers were. A Vonage forum member said a rep told him he was told to lie when questioned about the outage.

As an American citizen I intend to contact the U.S. Embassy about this as have several members of the Vonage forum. I hope other VoIP users will do the same and inform QTel of intentions to downgrade or cancel their internet subscriptions should the blockage not cease immediately. I know that, for myself, QTel is getting far more money from my internet subscription than from my trans-continental calls prior to activation of my Vonage line.

As a Muslim, if QTel fails to act, I intend to file suit against QTel in the Shari'a courts as the alteration of services without notification and the opportunity to cancel is a violation of divine injuctions regarding sale and contract in the Islamic Shari'ah (Religious Law).

We remain patient. "And God is with the patient."

I am feeling the pinch. I didn't have Vonage for 1 month becuase I shifted apartments and our phone sky rocketed to 700QAR for that month.

Phew! what can we do to get this service back?

Fast ...

You'd basically need to set up a VPN tunnel to somewhere else which is past QTel, i.e. not on QTel's network. Unfortunately this is difficult for non-technical people to set up.

Friends of mine are using VoIP using the provider ICONNECTHERE, their website is iconnecthere.com. They do charge for PC to phone calls but the rates are very low.

Apparently, they supply a patch which you run that overcomes the QTEL restrictions.

I have used the service myself and its very good

Really now. That's good to know. I'd really rather prefer to stick with Vonage, but if Vonage can't figure a way around QTel's stupidity, I may have to go with iconnect for home use.

As for the topic founder's plans to bring suit against them, all I can say is good luck. I strongly doubt it will work unless the blocking affects some people with important last names though.

From what I've read on line, UAE is also blocking VoIP because they're planning to bring their own VoIP system on line. Wonder if that's QTel's plan as well.

Personally. I feel that QTel is cutting off their nose to spite their face. A lot of us get the high speed ADSL strictly to use VoIP systems. I have free dial-up home internet access though my employer, and there is no reason for me to continue ADSL if they're gooing to make it unusable.

I just e-mailed Vonage customer support about this very issue. We'll see if they can keep up with the competition. I also posted a similar comment to Pat's on the Vonage forum. Let's keep this going to find a solution

Qtel did not block Vonage or Skype. Not sure why need VPN.Doesn't it add more overhead on the network? VOIP is 100% legal in Qatar according to ICT Qatar for personal usage. The main reasons for this audio problem are - higher network latency and lower upload speed.

Anyhow, my Vonage is working fine with a minor problem. I get perfect audio anywhere (tried FL, Montreal, Toronto) when I make the phone call. But when I make the call to my primary location, I get distorted audio. Simple solution- I ask other party to call me. Because I get super perfect audio quality when I receive the call from anywhere.

In one of my previous posting I have posted how to adjust the bandwidth (30/50/90) . In my case, 30 kbps is working fine.

Cheers

Steve's picture

Steve said Bull! ...

QTel *IS* blocking VOIP. I ran a protocol analyzer and noticed I was getting FIN packet responses back intermittantly, at sufficient level to ensure that choppy audio would result.
This would come and go, other users I know had similar issues. When THEIR service would clear up, mine would be unusable. When MY service would clear up, theirs would be unusuable.
Several years ago QTel purchased a package that would block VOIP traffic. This was well advertized in the business and the vendor even listed QTel as one of their clients. At that time, QTel officially stated that VOIP was illegal in Qatar and that they were blocking it.
After one bank and several other businesses who make extensive use of VOIP for their corporate usage threatened to pull their operations from Qatar AND numerous complaints from the Embassies of the US, a number of EU nations and India, QTel ceased interfering with VOIP without further comment.
DURING that time, QTel ordered their customer service representitives to lie about interfering with VOIP.
The only reason knowlege of the practice became public was due to one high level manager bragging about it in a public forum.
I no longer care though, I'm outta here.
