Al Khor

wimvan's picture

Dear all,

I will be moving to Qatar with my family quite soon. I will be working in Ras Laffan and have been offered housing in Al Khor.
Can anyone tell me something about Al Khor as a place to live with family (2 kids aged 4 and 6).
How about schooling, facilities, entertainment, living conditions and environment? Can my wife easily find a job in Al Khor?
Is Al Khor a nice place to live or should I insist on accommodation in Doha?

KR
Van

I don't know much about AlKhor bu I think it will be better if you stay in Doha especially that you have kids and they need to go to a nice school which I doubt you will find a nice one in Alkhor.

Hi Ayman,

Is daily commute from Doha to Ras Laffan feasible and is there accommodation to be found in the northern area of Doha?

I think you will find that the housing in Al-Khor is first class and that the schooling (English) is of a very good standard

The Ras Laffan Housing Complex in Al Khor is quite good (if that is where your staying), there is a nice beach there too. However, it is an extremely small town and really only used for the oil and gas industry. You would probably find your self coming to Doha on the weekends. See if you can stay in Doha as it is only a 30 to 40min commute in the morning.

There are some nice compounds in the northern area of Doha that could be withing your requirments and budget.

It will be better to read the following post and send me the information;

The school in Al Khor is good, well-equipped and has a happy staff. In fact everything for the expat community is well-equipped and there's a very nice club with a lot of social activities, besides lots of home-partying. Neverthless, it has a sleepy feel which can irritate and some of the teens, I gather, get a bit disgruntled. Playing the singles game might be tricky. Imagine a very orderly English suburb with no pub and a 60 minute drive to the nearest bar or off-licence, but with plenty of dance classes and bridge tournaments and stuff. Many people love it, some can't stand it.

Interesting comment mr Niceguy. How far away is Al Khor from the Doha?
What about housing, are they affordable? What is the name of the school? Is that the only school or are there any other schools within commuting distance? many thanks

Prices, I don't know. All the foreigners I know in Al Khor live in 'The community', a large compound between Al Khor proper and Ras Lafan which has one school, and one social club etc. I had thought housing and club membership was provided by the various employers. It's about 40 minutes drive from the North end of Doha to al Khor.
Warning! I don't live there, though I have visited and have pals there.

Many thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated. If things pan out my husband will be working west of Doha. What are prices like in Doha. We are currently living in a detached 4 bedroom villa plus maid's room with ducted a/c, outside a compound. Do we need to take out a "mortgage" for a similar set up. I understand rental prices are going crazy, worse than Dubai. Do tenants have to pay the agent's commission like we do in Dubai. We would prefer not to live in a compound. Are there any restrictions on women working and any restrictions on bringing in our cats?

Mr Niceguy's picture

Mr Niceguy said Villas not in compounds - ...

Villas not in compounds - don't know, but more of a chance outside Doha, and cheaper too. There are estate agents here who'll try to fix you up. Immediately West, you get Al Rayyan which is reputed to be for qataris only.

A lot of 'wives' here work in teaching and such like so I don't think there's any restriction on women working per se.

Incidentally, all my Al Khor comments above and elsewhere were about 'The Community'. If you're not working at Ras Lafan, it might not be easy to get in there. Al Khor proper is pleasant and quiet but I don't think many foreign professionals live there.

as far as I'm aware (and I could be wrong), Al-Khor is only for people working with RasGas, QatarPetroleum and QatarGas. I don't think it's open to others.

Many thanks Umm Summaya. I guess that's that then. perhaps I'm better off looking for places in Doha as I've got kids (3) of school going age. Are there expatriates living in predominantly Qatari areas? We're living in a predominantly local (Emiratis) area in Dubai and I must say we do enjoy it especially during Ramadan. My husband and my boys get to meet the locals at the local mosque and they are made to feel welcome despite the language barrier.

Hi I will be moving to AL khor in a few months from Canada. I am originally from UAE so I know the Gulf, but I have never been to Doha and Al khor! I was wondering if there is
1. sheesha near by (this will be important)
2. I saw that entertainment around is BIRD WATCHING . lol. is there anything else.
3. how much is it to take a taxi to Doha
4. The school in Doha - Qatar Academy AL KHOR...any thoughts on this school?

I hope someone can reply with something soon before I move.
Thanks

I was reading few threads by some adventurous ppl and according to them there are GHOSTS in Al-Khor or near AL-Khor surroundings. lol . Do keep this in mind, if your company is giving you 3 bedroom villa or apartment make sure you reserve one for the ghosts . lol.
But the place is fine, quite and not crowded like Doha. and also no speed cameras (this is what I like about that place)
One suggestion: Get a good car (V6), ask your company to give you accommodation in Doha so that your family will not suffer :P ,its just a 20 minute(max) drive on that new Alkhor road from Doha to Ras-Laffan, I think you can drive that much.

since my last comment i have since moved to al khor, after spending 3 1/2 years in Doha.

The reaction so far is mixed. I live in the community which is well equiped for expatriates: club houses (recreational centers), little supermarket, school.

It's a 30mins drive to the edge of Doha, and you do need to go in about once every couple of weeks (if not more) just to top up on items.

They're building a new mall, but dunno when that's be finished.

Qatar Academy, Al Khor seems quite nice. The facilities are great. registration is in january. follows the american curriculum. arabic is based on lebaneses curriculum. teachers all expat, classes small.

Also avail is the independent school - average standard, but not co-ed.

oh and taxi to doha i have heard is about 120QR (but haven't tried!)

sheesha - dunno!!

I'll be moving there in September 2010. I'd like to know how much is it to buy a used or brand new average car/4x4? I'm not looking for anything fancy.

Are there any nearby stores in Al Khor for purchasing herbs and spices?

I doubt you'll find a 2 bedrm villa in Al Khor. The minimum I could find were 5 & 6 bedroom for around 6000 to 8000 QR a month. Those were unfurnished and did not include W/E. The Expat community is the Al Khor Community but that is owned by QP and only houses Oil and Gas workers, so you can't rent from there. If you want something 2 bdrm and fully furnished look at Apartments.

Dear wimvan,

I hope by now you have been living comfortably in Qatar. I am also making a plan to shift to AL Khor.

Please suggest me about the place & the monthly expenditure that I will have to face there.

Is a salary of 15000 - 18000 QAR sufficient to live a normal life there. Further, would I be able to make savings.

Regards
Rabjot
