In fact there is a shortage ...In fact there is a shortage of driving schools in Doha nowadays. Thats why there is a long waitng list. In fact if you have an international driving license I think you will be able to get a temporary license(if you are on visit visa now) and once your visa formalities are over(you get resident visa status) then you can just convet this temporary license to a permanent one. All directly from Traffic department.

all the same ...They are all more or less the same....nothing special about any of them, just try to pick the closer to your home

Driving School ...Dear ABC, The system in all Doha's driving school is worst. AlRaya you can say is Bad but recomended among worst.
the best way for early admission to to create links with a School instructure (Driver) if he agreed to give you time that he can manage. One sri lankan driver named Tilak is very good but openly say for pocket money, so if you can manage.

Al Raya Driving School ...I'm just now coming back from my third driving lesson at AlRaya. If you don't want to wait for 2 months or more before starting,I suggest you to take night lessons as I am doing,I waited only ten days....But you will have to pay an extra-fee of 100 Riyals for the instructor overtime, which is nothing compare to the inconvenient of waiting too long.
I think I can't tell if the school is bad or good,it depends on the instructor you will be assigned to and his willingness to show you the essential tips.

Road Test ...Thanks for the advise everybody. Can anybody tell me how to go directly for road test skipping other 'L', 'S' & 'P' tests. I have met a few people who have only gone for road tests.

Good old days ...Back in the good old times when I was applying for my license, about 4 years ago, most of the people who had driving licenses from other countries, especially westerns, skipped the totally absurd “L”, “S” & “P” tests, and went directly for the street test. However I am not sure what is the procedure these days.
sfd24 said
Driving Tests ...I think you have to go through L & P also, (no more S now). You can get all info , just visit once Al Rayya School and meet with Mr. Adil (Mudeer). He is a nice person and the only can understand english. I mentioned earlier that you have to find some contact for early classes, find driver * win win relationship* and find early date for class ,early date for test.Drivers cares for their country fellow, so if you tell me your nationality i can guide you more(about instructure driver, only for Alraya).

drivers license ...is there anyway someone under business visa can get a driving license immediately if he has a drivers license back at home
Mystica said
nnagaty & expatin ...nnagaty, I have the same status as you are, I have a RP and I'm driving using my International Driving License but still on going with my local license. Egypt is in the list of International Driving license, but it's not possible for your license to be change into Qatari license....
expatin, Most of people in business visa use International Driving License as you are not entitled to apply for a local license unless you have a RP (Residence Permit) as they call it. And that is my business to issue an international driving license if you have a valid driving license from your own country....

Jail, stiff fine for driving without a valid license
Published: Sunday, 26 August, 2007, 12:10 AM Doha Time
By Nour Abuzant
ANY motorist convicted of driving a vehicle without a valid license could be sentenced to a jail term ranging from a month to three years and a fine from QR10,000 to QR50,000, or one of them, the new traffic law says.
The yet to be enforced law says that if a motorist "repeats" the same offense and is convicted by a court, the offender would be sentenced to imprisonment and a fine, both of which could not be suspended or waived.
The jail term, in this case, can range between a week and three years and the fine from QR20,000 to QR50,000.
The law defines "repetition" as committing a similar crime within a year from the day of serving the punishment for the first violation.
In all cases of repeated convictions, the minimum penalty would be the double of the previous punishment.
Driving without a license is one of the violations which cannot be settled by paying fines. This offense is automatically referred to a court of law.
Citizens of GCC countries who hold valid driving licenses issued in their countries can drive on Qatar's roads. If their licenses expires during their stay in Qatar, they can be substituted by licenses issued locally.
Visitors and tourists of all nationalities, holding valid driving licenses issued in their countries can drive in Qatar provided they get the approval from Qatar's traffic authorities within 15 days of their entry into the country.
ACCORDING TO THE NEW LAW, HOLDERS OF VALID INTERNATIONAL LICENSES CAN DRIVE VEHICLES IN QATAR FOR ANY PERIOD WITHOUT BEING SUBJECT TO FURTHER PROCEDURES.
The old law gave them only six months and they needed special permission to drive beyond this period. According to the amended new traffic law, which was issued on August 6 but is yet to come into force, insurance companies cannot refuse applications for third-party insurance. If they do, they would be liable to a fine of QR10,000.
The penalty will be doubled if the same company refuses to accept another application for third-party insurance within the next six months after the first conviction.
