Doctors - Salaries/allowances/living/Training /-a-t-/ HMC.

dr S's picture

Hi,
Any doctors around working at HMC as resident? I have applied for residency training program at HMC. Awaiting reply, however, I was wondring what would be the salary to expect and allownaces? Do they offer accommodation to married couples? If not what kind of living allowance they give? Basic salary? How is the training there at HMC?

Your guidance will be appreciated.

Thanks.
S.

I have no idea about the salary, but my real estate agent showed me the new housing for the Asian Games. She told me that after the games, the housing would used for hospital employees. In a guide book, it's listed as Married Dr. Housing. Looked pretty nice. Good luck... I'll be working at WCMC-Q and you may be working with some of our students.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum. I'm a doctor from Tunisia and I consider applying for a job in Qatar.

I learned so much about Qatar from this cool website, there's so much useful information but, just like dr S i guess, nowhere could I find something specific about salaries, allowances for doctors, nurses, dentists working at the HMC or elsewhere (private hospitals, Al Ahli, American hospital.

I know it all might depend on the country of citizenship, the degrees... but it could be nice to have at least an idea about what to expect, some raw numbers...

Any feedback from doctors would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, thanx to the user "Dentist" who gave me some very interesting insights about work at the HMC.

Have a nice week end everybody.
Y.

Residents are not called so any more at HMC, they are now called "Clinical Associates" , that was due to some JCI regulations...which is actually much better for them...i am a clinical associate by the way.
Married clnical associates will signed the so called "Married contract" which entitles you for a fully furnished house (usually villas), plane tickets for wife and three children every year, annual vacation of 40 days.
This package is by far the best package i have seen in the whole GCC countries for such a position.

Noble-Man said HMC Package ...

Dr S,

I have checked with a friend doctor at Hamad Hospital, and these are some feedbacks that I gather :

1. HMC plans to become a full fledged Specialist Hospital soon, therefore they don't
take in Residents anymore. Anyway, there is an exception to this...if you're enrolling the "Arab Board" Program, you'll be appointed as Resident. "Arab Board" is a 4-year program to become Specialists.

2. To enroll the Arab Board, HMC together with Weill Cornell Medical College conducts a yearly entrance exam (normally in Sept). In the recent exam, the passing mark was 55.

3. Salary for Resident is about QR 8,200/month (excluding Housing).

4. If you have relevant experience and qualifications, you will either be appointed Clinical Associate/ Specialist/ Consultant.

Thank you all for the info.I have following querries.Hope you guys will enlighten me over those.
I have been offered(informally) a position as Clinical Associate at HMC about 3 months ago. But I have not received an official job offer from them yet.I contacted them about 2-3 times till now by email and they say- your application is being processed and you will receive offer once this process is completed.
1)Is it normal for HMC to take this long to send offer OR its because of Doha Asian games at the moment?
2)How much time it takes to get a Qatar visa after I accept the offer?
3)When does new emplyoees start working each year, in Jan or Feb?
4)They are offering me 15100 QR Basic + Free acco,air-ticket and other facilities. Is it a fair offer for Clinical Associate position at HMC?
Your valuable advice is much appreciated.

Thank you

ttania_silva said Residency at Hamad Hospital ...

Hi, My name's Tania. I'm new to Qatar Living. Actually I just found out about the residency training program conducted by the Arab Medical Board at Hamad Hospital a couple of weeks back. I was hoping somebody could give me a bit of information about these residencies.

I have got the basics: there's an exam and an interview conducted in August etc... But I looking out for some specific info. Like what chance does an expatriate (South Asian) doctor on a visit visa stand of getting into a residency training program?

Are there any expatriates undergoing a residency training program at Hamad Hospital?

Also does Hamad Hospital prefer not to hire "female doctors on visit visas" into their residency programs. Thats what I heard so I just wanted to clarify.

Please somebody help me out coz right now I am in a dilemma. I don't know whether I should attempt the exams (Hamad Hospital exams) this year!

Waiting for a reply!!!

Thanks!!

Tania

englishalien said waiting for HMC ...

Hi Moskvich,
3 months is not long for HMC. Some of my friends at HMC waited 6 months or more after accepting a verbal contract offer.

One of my friends who works at HMC tells me they are having political problems at a high level right now. Some executives are trying to stop any new non-Qatari appointments.

Hope this doesn't cause you a problem.

knoxcollege's picture

knoxcollege said Seriously I dont understand ...

why would the doctors come to Qatar to work unless you are interested in doing charity work. The doctors I met in States and Canada were making loads of money. I am not talking about specialists just plain GPs, General physicians. One doctor I met told me that he was making close two hundred thousand U.S. Dollars every years after all the freakin tax deductions. Thats like 50000-60000 Qatari Riyals per month in Qatar. I guess Dr. Hijazi (the renowned cardiac surgeon and now in Saudi Arabia) used to get about 90000 Qatari Riyals per month.
So seriously guys if you want to live the LIFE and have a True Status in the society, better work in North America.
Middle East is for engineers like us, who wouldnt be making good money back home specially after taxes
As per my view the ranking of professions in North America is

1)Doctors
2)Lawyers
3)Chartered Accoundatnts
4)Nurses, other health professionals, chiro, radio, physio etc
5)Engineers

So you can see where the engineers stand. Anyways You have every right to disagree with my judgement

knoxcollege said QL The place to be ...

Everywhere engineers are paid less than the doctors. The best part of being a doctor is that you have a great circle of friends and PR.
And for people like me, you usually see them on QL or on other forums.

hashin's picture

hashin said not so sure bout that... ...

I don't agree with you entirely on that knox... about engineers being paid less...

knoxcollege's picture

knoxcollege said You are right Hashin ...

You can also see the engineers in remote places like jungles (strictly not for fun i.e. hunting) or near the gas fields or in the middle of nowhere like sea. Sometimes you can even see the engineers standing on the top of the broadast tower, shouting to the person down below not yet to turn on the power (happens when you forget to take the walkie talkie)
Last time I saw an engineer going two kilometres deep inside the sea trying to find the ROV. Since then scuba diving is off my list.

hashin's picture

hashin said its not all hunky dory for ANYONE ...

I think the point you are trying to make is that engineers have it tuff
you are right, it can be challenging...
but let me tell you doctors don't have it very easy too you know
Just today I gave a lift to a doctor with 7 years experience and her situation was worse than any of the scenarios you have given in your last comment... Not all doctors work in Hamad you know...
