Gotta love those honor killings

SAGE778's picture

KARACHI: In a spine-chilling incident of honour killing, a couple were burnt alive in a Pakistan village in front of their children, 10 years after their marriage, police said on Wednesday.

Zahoor Ahmed and his wife Naseem were charred in front of their four children in Chak Saboo village on Tuesday. Ahmed had allegedly kidnapped Naseem 10 years ago to marry her, police said.

In another incident, the nose and ears of a man were chopped off at Inayatpur Mahota, near Multan, on Tuesday because he married a girl from a rival clan in court two years ago, police said.

Twenty-two people barged into the house of Iqbal and took him, along with his brother Yasin and their mother, to a nearby field and cut off his nose and ears.

The attackers also chopped the ears off the man's brother and severed his mother's hand in the latest "honour" crime to hit Pakistan's conservative rural areas.

Just to make you feel happy and secure, most of the guys you see on the streets of Doha walking in white pyjamas and driving the heavy trucks are exactly the same pakistani patans, which do the "honor killings" at their home country. Same behaviour, same education.

Or more likely: same LACK of education. These people often don't even understand Islam.

alma wad said is honour killing rooted in islam ? ...

I often read articles which suggest - that honour killing is a muslim thing . In fact -as far as I know- it is rooted in hinduism . I do read often the news of india - and such things are reported daily - though not published much in western media .

alma wad's picture

alma wad said is it allowed by islam? ...

Honor killing is forbidden in Islam.[14] There is no specific mention of the practice in the Qur'an or Hadiths. An honor killing, in Islamic definitions, refers specifically to extra-legal punishment by the family against the woman, and is technically forbidden by the Sharia (Islamic law). Some Islamic religious authorities and Muslims, disagree with extra-legal punishments such as honor killing and prohibit it, since they consider the practice to be a cultural issue.[15] They believe that since certain pre-Islamic cultures have influence over a number of Muslims, murderers of females use Islam to justify honor killing, even though there is no support for the act in the religion itself. However, honor killings cannot always be punished according to many interpretations of Islamic law, as murders are a type of "qisas" ("retaliation") crime. This means that the deceased's family should be offered the choice of capital punishment or "diya" ("blood money") and no execution can take place without them opting for death. Because a relative(s) is responsible for the honor killing, it is unlikely that the deceased's family will punish one of their own for the crime.[16]

she is considered to have been raped- as she was kidnapped -and this way - she brought stain on the family s honour . this is the way there - as women s rape is viewed . the victims are killed - or forced into suicide .

alma wad's picture

alma wad said it should be always regarded as a murder ...

According to Sheikh Atiyyah Saqr, former head of the al-Azhar University Fatwa Committee (one of the oldest and most prestigious in the Muslim world):

Like all other religions, Islam strictly prohibits murder and killing without legal justification. Allah, Most High, says, “Whoso slayeth a believer of set purpose, his reward is Hell for ever. Allah is wroth against him and He hath cursed him and prepared for him an awful doom.” (An-Nisa’: 93) The so-called “honor killing” is based on ignorance and disregard of morals and laws, which cannot be abolished except by disciplinary punishments. [15]

alma wad said though some countries allow it ...

Countries where the law can be interpreted to allow men to kill female relatives in a premeditated effort as well as for crimes of passions, in flagrante delicto in the act of committing adultery, include:

* Jordan: Part of article 340 of the Penal Code states that "he who discovers his wife or one of his female relatives committing adultery and kills, wounds, or injures one of them, is exempted from any penalty." [6] This has twice been put forward for cancellation by the government, but was retained by the Lower House of the Parliament.[20]

Countries that allow men to kill female relatives in flagrante delicto (but without premeditation) include:

* Syria: Article 548 states that "He who catches his wife or one of his ascendants [sic], descendants or sister committing adultery (flagrante delicto) or illegitimate sexual acts with another and he killed or injured one or both of them benefits from an exemption of penalty."

Countries that allow husbands to kill only their wives in flagrante delicto (based upon the Napoleonic code) include:

* Morocco: Article 418 of the Penal Code states "Murder, injury and beating are excusable if they are committed by a husband on his wife as well as the accomplice at the moment in which he surprises them in the act of adultery."

* Haiti: Article 269 of the Penal Code states that "in the case of adultery as provided for in Article 284, the murder by a husband of his wife and/or her partner, immediately upon discovering them in flagrante delicto in the conjugal abode, is to be pardoned."

* Turkey: In Turkey, persons found guilty of this crime are sentenced to life in prison.[21]

* In two Latin American countries, similar laws were struck down over the past two decades: according to human rights lawyer Julie Mertus "in Brazil, until 1991 wife killings were considered to be noncriminal 'honor killings'; in just one year, nearly eight hundred husbands killed their wives. Similarly, in Colombia, until 1980, a husband legally could kill his wife for committing adultery."[22]

Countries where honor killing is not legal but is frequently in practice include:

* Pakistan: Honor killings are known as Karo Kari (Urdu: کاروکاری ). The practice is supposed to be prosecuted under ordinary murder, but in practice police and prosecutors often ignore it.[23] Often a man must simply claim the killing was for his honor and he will go free.

As of 2004, honor killings have occurred at the hands of individuals within parts of various countries, such as Albania, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Italy,[2] Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, the Palestinian territories, Sweden, Turkey, Uganda, the United Kingdom and the United States. Honor killings are more common among poor rural communities. In Europe, honor killings have mostly been reported within some Muslim and Sikh communities. Individual Arab Christians living within parts of the Near East, such as sections of Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority, are said to sometimes carry out the act as well.[11] Many cases of honor killings have been reported in Pakistan. In December 2005, Nazir Afzal, director of Britain's Crown Prosecution Service, stated that the United Kingdom has seen "at least a dozen honor killings" between 2004 and 2005.[3] Critics argue that the practice is over-whelmingly associated with certain Muslim cultures and the peoples influenced by those cultures.[12]

A global problem
Outside the UK, honour killings have been reported in countries throughout the world including: Bangladesh, Brazil, Ecuador, Egypt, Germany, India, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Sweden, Turkey, and Uganda.

The practice is common in Pakistan where police believe that up to 4,000 people, mostly women, have died in brutal honour killings in the four years between 2000 and 2004. Hundreds of women are raped or killed there each year in so-called honour attacks for behaviour including extramarital affairs or marriage without a family's consent.

In a recent case (June 2005), Jali Ahmed set fire to his sleeping wife and daughter and burned them to death in an honour killing. The 20-year-old girl was killed for having had an affair and her mother for not doing enough to discourage her daughter.

In another harrowing case, a Pakistani widow and her two daughters were beaten and forced to parade naked through a market after her son allegedly had an affair with another man's wife.

And in June 2002, a 30-year-old woman claimed she was gang raped on the orders of a tribal council to atone for her brother's alleged affair with a member of a powerful rival clan. Mukhtar Mai's family said the charge against her 12-year-old brother, Shakoor, was fabricated.

The family claims Shakoor was sodomised by a group of men from the local Mastoi clan. After they threatened to report the incident to the police, Mai was gang raped allegedly by four men.

In Europe the phenomenon is also on the rise. European police met in The Hague in 2004 to discuss ways to tackle the problem and pledged to set up a pan-European unit to crack down on honour killings.

Police believe that some families may have hired contract killers or bounty hunters. Some killings have also involved sending the victim back to the family's "home nation" to be killed there.

They have also acknowledged that the culture surrounding honour crimes is complex and that recognising early warning signs will be the first step towards saving lives.

Gumby said Friendd88-You are mistaken- ...

We're talking honour killings, not regular old murder, and no they are not common in every country, they are very particular to certain ethnic groups/nationalities, that is part of the reason they get so much attention, people wonder what it is about those cultures/ethnicities that breeds such behaviour. Common murder and banditry is universal, honour killings are not.

abdullah2008 said Argument about burning !!!!!!!!!! Post Your Opinion !!!!!!!!!!!! ...

Hey man
Why they did this?
There is no rule in Islam to burn any insect. But they burned human!!
What a great shockfor me??
Ruined Pakistani People!!!
I know the people who was burned, did a strong sin.
Did everybody forget it?
"Allah forgive any sin, just he don't forgivethe sin-to compare anything with HIM"But after a strong crying and tawbah(asking for forgive) HE also forgive that"
As Allah forgive anything,so they should gave time wo that people to asking for forgiveness to Allah.
If they didn't want to gave time for that, they could do another things rather than burn..
Like, killinhg by throughing stone, or cutting head(what is acceptable in ISLAM).
Burning is strongly forbidden in Islam.
Are you not see Hindu's burn died people.
It's just opposite of ISLAM.
The last point is:no one should not happy for this kind of punishment, what is not accepted in ISLAM.
If you look up the books of HADITH OF PROPHET MuHAMMAD(sallallahu alaihi wasallim) you will never find that
there was a rule in ISLAM to burn people.

So people: what is your opinion about burning people, which is not acceptable in ISLAM.

brandylady said hello abdullah ...

burning people when they are alive I believe to be so wrong and agonising for the person involved,
however, in the UK people ask that when they die, instead of being buried, they want to be cremated (burned).
I myself have lost my Father, 1 Brother and a Sister, my Sister was buried but my Father and my Brother were both cremated, I found it a lot harder to watch my Sisters coffin being lowered into the ground and covered in earth, than to watch my Father's and my Brother's coffins slide discreetly behind a velvet curtain out of sight.
We return in a few days to scatter their ashes wherever they wanted them, my Father's are in a rose bed where the most beautiful yellow roses grow.

The rock's picture

The rock said In anycase, i don't ...

In anycase, i don't understand why people try to pick up just one crime and start pointing fingers at a nation.

I mean why don't they also start a thread for
-most rapes in a country
-worst mafia crimes in a country
-most financial crimes in a country
-countries that commit genocide and war crimes
-countries where most abortions are done

I'm sure if you try to assign a country name to the crimes listed above (ofcourse the list can be longer), then the countries involved would be located from end of the world to the other.
I mean to say a crime is a crime. Just don't understand why some people have so much time to waste as to name a country and just start bashing

:)

point made ? I hope w/o offending anyone

folks, stop pointing fingers. Suggest solutions if you can... do something useful instead.

Next time anyone wanna discuss honor killings (so called), i suggest read up a little on the history of the subject and find out the origins and reasons. It's got nothing to do with Pakistan nor Islam.
