not so cheap ...I don't have specific prices, but when I have compared Qatar prices of technology to U.S. prices, Qatar is always more expensive. But the U.S. is often cheaper than other places for computers.
A friend from Canada, where laptops are about 20% more expensive than the U.S., got a good deal on a laptop at -- of all places -- the Dubai airport duty-free shop.
Perhaps people from other countries can post their experiences so you can compare them to the Philippines. Or tell us what a specific laptop costs in the Philippines and people may have opinions on the price difference here.

Prices of tech products here ...Prices of tech products here are very expensive.
It's a small market and dealers can charge pretty much anything they want.
If you're getting a notebook from elsewhere consider the warranty and support. If you can get an international warranty fine.
Dell, Sony, Lenovo (IBM) and HP have dealers here.

they're offering laptops for ...they're offering laptops for 1,900 QR these days at carrefour. Needless to say, one should not expect the best quality for that rate.
Laptops range from anything between 2500 QR (690$)to 12,000 (3300$) QR depending on the manifacturer and technical specs.
I don't know what you're looking for exactly but for your typical duo core centrino (1.7 - 2.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, DVD+/-RW, 14" monitor) expect to spend anything between 3800 QR (1050$) - 7000 QR (1920$)
good luck

how about desktop computer - ...how about desktop computer - is that vry costly too?

Depends on the ...Depends on the configuration.
You can get some very cheap ones, and some shops will throw in a desk and printer or scanner.
Good PCs are hard to find.
I always custom-configure mine and order them from the US.

doctvm ...no. those are dirt cheap. if you opt for assembled PC's as opposed to the branded ones of course.
anything between 1200 QR - 3000 QR roughly

doctvm, amazon.com ...I bought an acer laptop 3 years ago from amazon and it's still working perfectly fine, now i consider replacing it with smtg new, smtg like this (it's on sale):
Acer TravelMate 4222WLMi
Core Duo T2300
1.66 GHz - Centrino Duo -
RAM : 1 GB -
HD : 120 GB -
DVD?RW (+R DL) / DVD-ROM -
802.11a/b/g -
Win XP Pro -
15.4" Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA )
950 usd
(and it seems you will not need to pay any import taxes in Qatar..)
So how's work at the hospital ? different from what you're used to ?

Laptop ...It's much cheaper to purchase your laptop here in the Philippines as compared to Qatar. It took me awhile to understand what you were trying to say, but with regard to laptops, i've been looking at notebook prices and comparing them to those that I've seen here and in other sites over the internet, and it is cheaper to buy in Manila, given the same specs of course. if you can provide the specs that you need, maybe we can come up with something. do you want it brand new, used, or refurbished? what's your RAM requirement? hard drive capacity? processor speed? processor type? screen size? operating system? the price varies depending on your need.

LAPTOP import duties ...Hi e46M3...
U mentioned u always configure and order from the US and im thinking of doing the same .... ( the lappies here ) do not have the specs i want. I'm planning of ordering them online and having them shipped here.
what is ur experience on this ? how long did it take, and how much were the customs duties, taxes, etc. and the other extra charges when ur package arrived here ?
Thnks for your help !

buying a lappie here... ...Hey angel !
I disagree with you.... i have been here in qatar for awhile and noticed that if you compare " apples to apples " its much more cheap to buy them here. Try looking for the same HP model in carrefour and in the Phils, u will see that in Manila lappies cost 40-60% higher for the same models in Qatar.
There are a lot of cheap laptops in the Phils but only because they have older and lower specs. So it all boils down to assessing the power and kind of lappie u actually need...
But as i mentioned, same branded models would cost 40-60% more in the Phils. Hope this helps...

I'm sorry but I seriously ...I'm sorry but I seriously have to disagree with some comments.
It seems that people are not good at shopping around.
Tech products in Qatar are VERY cheap. Sometimes they are more expensive due to the fact that you get a comprehensive or international warranty.
In most shops, tell them you DONT want the warranty and the price will drop amazingly.
With 'some' products it's cheaper in the US.
American people have to remember, there are alot of people that complain America is so expensive (or complain petrol is expensive when you're petrol is 1/4th the price of the UK), but the US is cheaper than so many countries in the world when it comes to actual goods (then again, you get lower salary and have taxes too).
Now for some stats. (I compare prices like crazy before buying anything)
I bought an HP 6500 model for 2000QR for my baby sister, however it cost 600GBP (4500QR) in the UK and 3200QR in the US.
My mother's LG T1 express cost her (4000QR) however the price in the UK was 6700QR and it was 5600QR in the US
My Macbook (Max spec) cost me 5100QR in the UK but it costs 4500QR in Qatar and 3900QR in the US. (Apple's used to be cheaper in the US than any country, however Qatar's prices are catching up.
Now when it comes to general electronics, I'll tell you that 85% of them are cheaper than most countries (except in stores where you have RIP off owners)
Hope I help.

amnesia - do you think ...Do you think it is better to buy without a warranty, I am not so sure I would agree with that.
However, on the whole electronics are definately much cheaper here if I would compare them to the Euro. Just good brand electronic kitchen untencils are nearly a quarter the price I would pay in Europe.

wow a two month old post ...wow a two month old post :P
To be honest, I've never needed a warranty for anything.
I mean I did get a warranty for alot of stuff, however I've never used it.
Sod's law states that something will break 1 second after the warranty expires. LOL
