From today's Peninsula (only ...From today's Peninsula (only 2 days after Novi posted this event :-);
HSBC Asian 5 Nations Series (HSBC A5N) launched by the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) in Hong Kong in February is now well underway. The first few matches took place last weekend.
The week three match between the Arabian Gulf Rugby Football Union (AGRFU) and Korea on May 9 will be held in Doha. The Korean team will be hosted by Doha RFC and the game will be held at the Al Arabi Sports Stadium at 7pm on Friday. Entry is free and this will be a great opportunity for all rugby fans to see some international stars in action.
The AGRFU narrowly lost their first match against Hong Kong 12 - 20 in Al Ain, UAE. Korea also lost their first match 17 - 39 to favourites Japan, in Incheon.
This is a major new international series in the rugby calendar and will involve Arabian Gulf, Hong Kong, Japan, Kazakhstan and Korea. Modelled broadly on the European Six Nations tournament, it aims to accelerate the development of rugby across the most populated continent.
"It is a great honour for Doha RFC to host this important tournament that will bring Asian rugby to the attention of the international rugby stage," said Howard Bevan, Chairman of Doha RFC. "Following our successful hosting of the 2007 Asian Ladies Rugby 7s Championship, we are confident that we will be able to prove that Qatar is truly a rugby nation both on and off the pitch."
