I assume they'll run things ...I assume they'll run things in the same way as the men's tournament; tickets are free and you just turn up and get your tickets on the day you want to go. Only the final sold out in the men's tournament, so there shouldn't be a problem attending. Just turn up.

Mmmm... wish I'd thought of ...Mmmm... wish I'd thought of that for the QL photo shoot Ronin, but I chose the Robot Zoo event instead. Oh well, I guess QL photographers can still take photos at the tennis and add them to the QL flickr group if they like.
I managed to get some good shots at the men's tennis last month (have a look at the site below if you're interested), though I was constantly scared about the camera shutter disturbing the players!!!

I would like to know your settings on getting such sharp images despite of the speed at which they play. I'm still trying to get used to the techie stuff of my DSLR Olympus E-510. I just bought it a couple of months ago in HK during the Christmas holidays.
What inspired me to go into the hobby is when the French Acrobatic pilots and the Red Arrows came to town. I missed the french planes but I ended up borrowing my friend's point and shoot Sony when the Red Arrows came. Plus I also tried my hand on the powerboat with the same Sony p&s.
So here I am trying my new hobby in Photography. I am really excited about getting the top 2-9 of the ladies International tennis champs. I'm a huge fan of Maria Sharapova. I hope you can give me the right settings for high action shots as sharp as what you took on the men's and the Red Arrows.
I currently have 2 lenses - one is the 14-42 mm (f1, 3.5-5.6) and then the 40-150mm zoom (f4-5.6). I hope this is enough to cover the game. I haven't seen any Zuiko Olympus four-thirds lenses around here enough for the next higher range say up to 300mm. Have you seen any stores around here that specializes on DSLR's?

Thanks Ronin! I'm still ...Thanks Ronin! I'm still learning how to use my camera, but I'll do my best to give you some advice;
I have a Canon EOS350D. The lens I used for all the action shots at the tennis was the a 75-300mm f/4-5.6. A 150mm lens should still enable you to get some good shots (I wasn't using the full range of the 300mm lens all the time).
To get good action shots you need to use a high shutter speed, so put your camera into the mode where you can set the shutter speed ('TV' on the Canon).
However, the problem with increasing the shutter speed is that less light can get into the sensor, which is a real problem at night time (the flash will be useless when you're far from the subject, so just turn it off). Fortunately the center court at the tennis is pretty well lit, but you'll probably need to crank up the ISO setting on your camera as well, but be warned that you'll introduce more 'noise' as you do this.
It looks like I was using shutter speeds of between 1/125 & 1/400 seconds, and ISO settings of 800 & 1600. (btw, I believe you can see these values if you look at my photos on flickr).
Your best bet is just to go along and experiment. You'll soon get an idea of the best settings to use. The good thing about digital is you can take hundreds of shots without worrying about film.
Not sure where you can get Olympus lenses from I'm afraid, as I use the Canon store in Salam for my needs.

I think that during the ...I think that during the early rounds matches are played all day, but the semi-finals and finals are in the evening.
The Qatar tennis website should have a schedule up soon, but as usual for Qatar it's pretty rubbish for up to date information (it doesn't even have the entry list up yet)!

I got some shots of the Egyptians celebrating last night along my street here near Jaidah Flyover. Man those guys were honking their cars til after midnight! Kept me up so I decided to practice my night shots over the window when they passed by with their flags! Awesome bunch of folks celebrating with them too... Congrats to the Egyptian Team.
Thanks again tallg. Will keep you posted on other tech stuff. I actually got your settings on the flickr as you said. Will try it out on my cam.

tickets ...Last year they sell only season tickets for i think 300 riyals. You will be seated on the North Seat ( fronting the VIP seats ) .. East and West seats are free ..

If you cannot open the files ...If you cannot open the files I linked to then you need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Do a google for it.
Order of play is released on a daily basis, normally the evening before the day in question. I guess it can't be done before then as they don't know who's going to be playing and they don't want to schedule someone to play first thing in the morning if they were still playing late the night before.
The current link lists matches being played today (despite the fact that the tournament is supposed to start tomorrow!) and it says all matches start at 3pm.

Can't believe the official Qatar Tennis website hasn't bothered to put this information up yet, when the eyes of the tennis world are on them and they're being linked to from the official WTA website. Shocking.

and it will be much more games tonight than your schedule indicated.. there are 6 games started around 6, and 4 games will start after these 6 are over...which will happen around 8 or so...

how one can know WHEN? ...the scene is changing every day.. whoever looses, goes home, whoever wins, goes for the next tour.. noone can know in advance who will win and who will loose...that's why the schedule can be issued only for the following day!

any idea of the number of people watching? ...Hi Tallg...any idea what is the turn-out of people watching yesterday? I'm planning to watch today and I just got hold of the order of play. My problem is that I have a work up to 3:30pm and may reach the venue at maybe 4:15 earliest. How does the ticket sysytem work? Like is it for every game they are issuing? or one time ticket for the whole day at the same court (Center Court, Court 1..e.g..) Can you advise best possible way to get tickets considering the situation..
P.S.
Is it allowed say my friends queu there early and get a ticket for them and mine too?

Hi wayneelep. I haven't been ...Hi wayneelep. I haven't been down yet this week, but I can't imagine they have sell-out crowds there. Only the final was a sell-out for the men's tournament earlier this year.
And I'm not sure if they're issuing tickets on a court-by-court basis or whether one ticket gives you access to any court. I'm sure someone who's been there already will be able to tell us.
There shouldn't be any problem with getting someone else to pick up tickets for you. On the day of the men's final the ticket booth was open all day, and people were there picking up anything from 1 to 10 tickets!
