BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD screening
In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary creativity, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.
Inspiring, moving and at times very, very funny, ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ hit the big screen at Sundance in 2012, where it took a Grand Jury Prize; it has since won a slew of prizes at festivals and institutions the world over, including the Caméra d’Or at Cannes and the BFI’s Sutherland Award. Distinguished for its sympathetic characters and the wildly imaginative universe they inhabit, the film is itself a rare beast: a real adventure in cinema.
