Dear everybody

I would like to open this forum to discuss one important issue that is to be salray ranges in Qatar. Evaluting any employment offer can be much easier if we have done a research of slary range for a ceratin position which may help us to know wether or not it is a fair offer. Therfore, I would like to ask about the availability of sources that tells us about different amount of salries for diffrent positions. Personally, I woud like to know the salary of an architect or urban planner and also for a head of planning unit in Qatar.

Thanking you in dvance.

Hachita, I don't know about discrimination here with regards to salary you are referring to.

As far as I know, I'm Asian and my housing allowance is now more than QR10000. Transport allowance is now QR4000, annual air tickets for my whole family, education for my kids, etc.

I'm Asian too.

I have hired Admin Personnel as follows;

Admin Assistant 1 starts from QR2000

Admin Assistant 2 starts from QR4000

Admin Executive 1 starts from QR4500

Admin Executive 2 starts from QR7500

and so on...

So it depends on your experience, etc.

Other benefits applies.

Hello, my title here is Senior Business Analyst, working with SAP, with over 10 years experience. Same as my wife. We are looking into what it would mean to move to Qatar for 2 years to make some more money. What monthly salary can we expect? Will housing be paid for and airfare home be paid for? Will both our jobs give us housing, or just one? ie, can we save money with the housing? We dont have children. We are indian citizens with US green card, does that mean we will get paid as Indian or as US person? How much can we expect to save? Will men and women get paid differently? Please give advise.

Nah, the Abbos are the REAL Ozzies - the white ones are descendants from the criminal classes we deported many years ago from the UK. Its a shame we dont still do that in the 21st Century - you could have had Captain Hook join u!

It seems to be accepted that people who are white get a high salary and housing allowance and that brown people dont. That is scurrilous to me - why oh why do they include people from Oz in the white bracket.?

appartment fully furnished in a nice area, 2-2.5K USD/month. The cost of the car depende on the brand and condition. There are good options and prices in the market. Now you have to think how much will you need to send your wife in order to pay costs in her country. If the contract is for 2.5 years, you can prorated the cost of your car within that period, taking in account you will sale when you leave Doha. It's probably you have to assign about 0.5k usd a month for the costs above mentioned. so, easy you can live with 3.5K USD/month...

GIASI(Get In And Stay In) I suspect has left Qatar.

Masantos, I haven't lived in Qatar for 8 years so am out of touch with prices and general life in Qatar.

You should also get education allowance for any children.

I suggest you search for cost of living price indicators on QL.

I have said this on other threads.

You need to establish what you can save in your current position and compare that to what you are likely to be able to save in Qatar.

Sorry but that's the best advice I can offer.

It all depends upon from where you are coming and what is your current salary and which company you are joining.

For Oil Sector it can range from Basic 10K to 15K. Accomodation should be provided by them or equivalent should be reimbursed as allwoance for Transport most of the company either give car or arrange with there own trnasportation arrangement.

Dweller,

I've deleted the contents in my post.

My intention is to help provide others an idea of what the salary ranges are in Qatar.

I guess the forum don't really encourages "information" but rather for a person to post what his offer is and for others to then comment.

If it is the forum "rules", so be it and I'll follow along.

I suspect you have much to learn of how things work in Qatar.

Salary equity in Qatar is not as "equitable" as in many other countries and the discussion of salaries/benefits by employees is not welcomed.

Comparing salaries and benefits is not a good way to gauge offers.

I have always thought it preferable to suggest that the employee attempts to calculate his likely saving capacity in Doha compared to his current position.

By Tiger Lim• 4 years 10 months ago.
Tiger Lim

Which is why I don't list the company's name nor the industry.

Moreover, I don't think anyone from a company can take another person of the same appointment to compare as salary always commensurate with experience & performance.

In my previous companies that I have worked for, the difference in the salary of the same appointment, with the same experience differs by as much as 30% due to performance.

There are those with lesser years of experience earning more than people with a lot more experience.

And in all my experience, anyone who comes to me to "request" for higher salary because his peers are earning higher are always given the option to resign.

Anyway, it's just an idea to help others guage the offers they receive, as there are also many factors to consider when one takes up employment in another country.

Cheers

By dweller• 4 years 10 months ago.
dweller

if anyone would be prepared to give their details. You are obviously very happy with your deal and are prepared to publish but how will your employer feel if someone identifies who you work for (and the information you provide gives enough data) and presents the data as justification for an increase. Open discussion of salaries and other package details is not common in the Gulf region so take care.

By Tiger Lim• 4 years 11 months ago.
Tiger Lim

I think this thread will be useful if those working in Qatar provide some sort of a guide to what they are earning. In this way, others looking thru will have an idea of what to expect and compare to whatever offer they have, or are looking at. Maybe some details can include;

1. Previous

a. Appointment:

b. Years of Experience:

c. Country:

2. Present (in Qatar)

a. Appointment:

b. Basic Salary:

c. Housing Allowance:

d. Transport Allowance:

e. Other Allowances:

f. Other benefits;

There may be other information that is required but I think the above gives an idea of what a person is in terms of his appointment, experience, etc and whether it is better for him/her to seek opportunities in Qatar.

It'll also give those presently in Qatar to make comparisons to whether they are "underpaid" etc.

My 2 cents worth.

$4k all inclusive will make you hate life in this place.  stop light fines alone are $1,400...imagine the rest.  rental cars and prices of vehicle and groceries are higher than norm since everything is imported.  and you're going to need to take showers 2x a day...or you'll smell like an arab

what the recruiter told me when she asked me how much is my expectation i answered her with 7000qr and she smiled and said they dont offer that much for a filipino teacher..that amt.of salary(7000qr and more) is mostly offered for western/native eng.teachers..I really like to go there since it is our dream to work and live there with our daughter.Thnx nomerci

joygem, it depends on the school you are working for. Usually, Western schools/ kindergartens pay more than non Western ones...but often want native english spekers(as they are ususally English speaking institutions) as teachers. They do hire , locally, TA's, they are usually not native English speakers, and have lower salaries.

i have seen your nationality and if its true that you are from sweden, then base your salary from the one you are receiving in sweden or from your previous salary.  I beleived that nationality matters.  for example, a filipino working in their homeland was offered 3 times of the salary they are receiving in the philippines, then it is a good offer.  logically, if you are from sweden and you considered your salary to be low, then ask for a triple or 5 times as of your rate in your own country.  you will be an expatriate here and they will hire you because of you exemptional knowledge and not as a labor.

Dalida,

Salaries in Qatar and salaries in the UAE seem to be the amongst the most competitive salaries in the Middle East region today as per Bayt.com's 2011 Middle East Salary Survey - also working professionals in Qatar seem to be the best savers in the region with 36% of them stating they are managing to save between 16% and 75% of their income. The full report is available here , should you be interesting in downloading it: http://www.bayt.com/en/research-report-9823/

questions have not generated any response because there is no hard and fast salary for any job in Qatar.

QP have, as most companies have, a range for each job.

The ranges are not generally known and are not published.

The trick is to calculate what you can save in your current position and compare that with what you are likely to save in Qatar.

There are links on the QL site to indicate your likely cost of living and accommodation costs which will help you do this.

Some companies have other benefits such as transport allowance, various levels of medical cover and education allowance for children. These have to be discussed with the employer to determine the levels of support that they offer.

It's up to the individual to calculate what his/her potential savings are taking into account his/her likely life style.

Hi everyone! ;)

I can see there's been a tremendous positive response on each questions here.

I've been called up and offered an assistant mgr position in a marketing dept. they didn't state how much they're offering but instead asking how much am i expecting. Offer states " Salary package inclusive of Housing and transport expenses"

on top of that :

ü 30 days paid leave upon completion of service

ü Return ticket for vacation

ü Medical Coverage

ü Health Insurance

I would seek advise for those who knows the Theme park marketing industry and what shall i consider in accepting this offer. They are expecting immediate reply for Jan 2011.

If i consider this offer,may i knw:

1.walking distance apt to Hyatt plaza, is there any, fully furnished at least studio apt? How much should i expect?

2. how's the weather like, day n night, season?

3. how much is enough for car allowance?

4. should i be considering anything else which i didn't mention here? please state.

I'm a Malaysian in my early 30's - single female and has been in the Events Marketing industry for almost 7 years of profession. Would anyone kindly advise me on this. It was highly recommended by my brother to take up this offer.

Appreciate any reply and advice. thank you. ;)

Hi Dalila

Did you mean that everyone could post here with hteir Job, nationality, years of experience and so on and then their salary in order to make a kind of database on Qatar salaries? I agree that such a thing could be useful when one needs to negotiate a contract. But I don't know if some "bad" consequenses also might come from it. I usually only tell my salary on request to my closest firends. Many times it causes more friction than benefit.

I work as a contractor for QatarGas in the field of IT consulting. More specific, I work with a system called SAP and I do security and authorizations and segregation of duties.

If someone is in a similar area they are welcome to contact me and we can continue the conversation in private.

It depends who you are with and what their salary scales are. There isn't a ballpark figure for the job.

Regarding if it's a good or a bad offer, it's a matter of calculating what you can save in your current position and what you can reasonably expect to save in Qatar. There are some living cost details on QL but it really depends on your life style.

Will the company pay for your child's education? I assume that medical cover is provided by the company.

Having left Qatar originally in 1997 I am not fully up to speed with living costs although I did note significant increases in such as accommodation when I was there in 2003 and 2004.

Good luck.

and even then my information is a tad out of date.

Indefinite contracts are for recruiting within the pay scales.

Definite contracts were introduced to enable QP to recruit well into the pay scales with pay that resulted in some inequity within staff of the appropriate geographical groups. A fact which upset some staff on indefinite contracts. However, staff on indefinite contract were guaranteed (until their services were no longer required) a job.

There were also "special" contracts which enabled QP to recruit outside (above) the pay scales. This was for incumbents that were filling critical roles into which it was impossible to recruit within the scales. Initially, those in such positions received no ESB. I don't know if they now receive such payments.

The notice required of those on definite contracts was the same as for those on indefinite contracts. I assume that is still the case but do not know for sure.

On notice (again I am assuming) Unless you are terminated within the first 3 months probation period, you will be given whatever notice is specified in the contract (indefinite used to be 3 months).

I would have thought that being given time off to job search would be permitted providing it didn't interfere with operational schedules or work committments.

You would obviously need to chack the above with the company. If you need any more detailed info, it may be better to send me a PM.

Thanks Dweller for your comment.

Is it better to accept a permanent contract or a fixed term one? Whats the main difference in Qatar with reference to notices, salary, other aspects?

If you get a job and than after a couple of month the employer decide that you are not good, does employee have any rights to have expenses refunded or look for another job while on notice?

Thanks

Bob

By dweller• 6 years 3 months ago.
dweller

Use both company web sites and agencies but obviously not for the same job.

Companies have to pay agencies so applying directly to the company may save them money.

Agencies sometimes ignore candidates because of a lack of (sometimes inflated) qualifications. the company may be more forgiving.

If you don't know who the agency is recruiting for, obviously you would have to use the agency.

I am interested in moving to Qatar.

For an accountant with more than 10 years experience is there a market, and being over 40 is considered not positive?

Which could be an acceptable annual income + Benefits?

Is better to apply to job through recruitment agencies or directly to the company?

Looking at blog it seems that there are some major employer and I wonder if it is more convenient to contact directly the company or have a recruitment agency negotiate on your behalf.

Thanks and excellent blog.

I haven't been involved directly with QP salaries for many years but have been involved in the UAE since leaving Qatar and have kept in touch to some extent with what's happening in Qatar.

The Gulf Oil Companies (QP, Aramco, BAPCO, UAE (ADCO, ADPOC etc), PDO & KOC) undertake their own annual survey for comparison of salaries and benefits and in addition meet for discussions between the survey being undertaken.

The perks (I prefer the term allowances and benefits) DO differ a lot and these can be accounted for from the survey data.

I wouldn't use QP as a benchmark as they differ from the other GOC's (Gulf Oil Companies) significantly on some elements of the package.

There is no "single" salary to cover such as "Senior Manager in a reputable company in Qatar".

Each organisation has it's own salary scales which could obviously differ widely from between organisations.

The title of "Senior Manager" will imply different things within different organisations.

A Senior Manager in such as QP would carry significantly more accountability (and thus salary) than a similar title in a 50 man operation.

I think the only way you can determine if the offer is suitable is to examine what you can save in your current position and compare that against what you can reasonably expect to save in Qatar.

This would obviously involve examining the lkely costs in Qatar by looking at some of the previous (recent) posts on QL regarding living costs.

I note that there is no provision in your offer for schooling and transport. Ordinarily those elements are covered in packages.

Good luck

Alternatively, look for an international company that are seeking someone to post to the region as a SEcondee. As a Secondee, the package would likely be better and employment almost guaranteed when you left Qatar.

Hello Everyone,

I want to relocate in Doha with my wife and little daughter but there is no luck yet, in my mails for a job in the companies of the city. I am an SAP R/3 MM/LO Senior Functional Consultant (10+years) and any advise will be more than helpful. ABAP knowledge/experience (5 years) is also in my profile.

There are no target salary expectations apart from the willing to relocate.

Thank you all.

with QP is virtually impossible.

Their recruitment offers are ordinarily in line with the peer group of the individul, job grade and experience.

What your husband has heard about QP paying double is simply not true.

Dear All

I am new to Qatar Living and we are thinking of moving to Qatar.

My husband (American Citizen from Arabic origin) is talking with an oil company in Qatar for a professional position. He has 20 years of experience, most of it in the oil sector.

Their offer is: Basic 18 k, plus housing, 2k transportation, 55k furniture, health, dental, life insurance and schooling for the kids.

My Husband is working here in US in an Oil company already and making more money than the offer of Qatar.

He is not satisfied with the offer, as he has heard from other coworkers that QP, Qatar gas and Aramco, pays for Americans double what they make in US with such experience. Actually, he rejected an offer from Aramco which was 20 % higher than his salary in US, just because he does not want us to live in Saudi.

Can anyone help with more info before he goes to the interview and medical please? do you think he can negotiate with them for at least 27 K basic?

Thanks

Cheyenne

What you are suggesting has been discussed earlier I think but possibly not on this thread.

Some companies may offer that option and some won't. If you go that way (spend a lot less on accommodation) don't be surprised if one day your allowance is reduced to what you actually pay.....it could happen.

Hi mish, i like what you answered to Barburo, my question is regarding salary also..but on different aspect. I was hired as a secretary at a New company, 2,500 QR. Yap, i know this is very low , i just grab it cause im tired of looking for job actually its been going for a month now and some offers are drastically low for me..some offer me a salary lower than that in said amount ive mention above and some of the offers are practically, good for single men/women which im in a family status of visa. These days, if you want a job immediately i think we should never be picky. My question here is, Is there any bank that will allow my salary to get a loan for a some kind? im planning to get a loan for some small business purposes ..please kindly tell me which bank is good to have loans like these..i very much appreciate it your answer!

DEAR DALIALA

This is a very unusual question .

Here salary depends on the company level , the candidate then comes the experience .

Many companies have a feeling that westerns have to be paid high taking their life style into consideration .

As far as gulf states are concerned education has no big value - Everything is upside down here !!!!!!!!!!

Luck favours everywhere .

By dweller• 6 years 11 months ago.
dweller

You should assess any salary offer in respect of how much you can save in comparison to what you are able to save in your current position.

QAPCO I believe offer salaries in line with the experience of the recruits and the salaries paid to their peers.

Information on living costs in Qatar, together with housing costs are available on the QL site although I am unsure when they were last updated.

Try this link.

http://www.qatarliving.com/answers/cost-of-living/how-much-should-i-expect-to-save-in-20000-pm

For accommodation costs (if accommodation is not provided) I suggest you have a look at the classifieds accommodation section.

Good luck

If you want to enhance your skills, you can talk to your ERP team, ask them to provide a user account with maximum rights in the test server for you to practice. I hope, you already know the basics of SAP. Additionally, I suggest you read some books on SAP and there are open forums online on this vast field. Just google. Of course, it is always better to have a mentor.

Hello anyone who can help,

I am a senior geologist and have been offered a position with an oil and gas company. They are offering me 51700 QR per month. That includes my base salary (31450 QR), housing (15000 QR) and other allowances (5550 QR). This total 169973 USD a year. In addition they give a bonus up to 17% of my anual base salary (This might mean about 15000 USD more a year). They also pay the children's private schooling and provide comprehensive medical coverage. We have three children of which two are still in school. My goal is to save at least 100000 USD per year to make my move worth it. We are a family with reasonable needs, nothing extra fancy. I have read a lot of worrisome posts about the high cost of living in Qatar. Do you think that saving is feasible without stretching too much our quality of life?. I currently live in Houston, Texas. I think that there is some room for salary negotiation but before doing so I would like to have an idea about possible ranges.

Your insights will very much be appreciated.

Is tied to the grade but only loosely. there is no direct relationship now between the salary scale and the WIA. When it was introduced there was.

Can anyone kindly advise the level of WIA paid by QP to UK citizen? Does it vary with job grade? Grateful for your assistance.

Coool, it is a good salary since you have been provided with accomodation. cost of living and gasoline is very cheap compared to other nationals. since you are canadian they are offering this much all the best

I have been in QP three weeks ago for technical interview along with medical check. I've been told that they will send an email in which they will make an official offer, so since then I did not recieve any thing. I wonder if somebody has gone through this process before, and could he or she tell me how long did he/she waite until they recieved an response?

why would you consider to work abroad for the same pay you are presently receiving? besides you will spend here about QR500-QR900 per month for food alone... and i think this is not the best time to move here coz every company is talking about retrenchment brought about by the crisis... but of course if a company offers you a pay of QR8,000 or more, accept it but not QR1,930 ...

1. On the grades. Not sure. There were 15 until 1996 but then they increased them. That 15 excluded four Qatari managerial grades.

2. The mins and maxes are not openly published.

3. The salary is not negotiable as negotiation tends to destroy internal equity which took a lot of establishing.

Salary is reviewed annually in Winter but I don't know what the max amount now is (but never expect the maximum)

3A.Scales have been reviewed on an emergency basis historically and then the tendency is to over-react.

4. Performance bonus? NO unless things have changed drastically

5. Other allowances include Transport, housing, WIA (plus a new one to do with exchange rate I think that has been introduced but I don't know its name), location allowance and offshore allowance. Plus furniture purchase grant and after X number of years a furniture maintenance allowance.

6. Housing allowance - cannot comment have never experienced it but from what I read on here, it isn't a lot although accommodation prices do appear to be dropping slihjtly as the supply increases.

7. Bring your sense of humour, you will need it and I don't mean to put you off. We spent 15 years with QP and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hope this helps and I am sure if I have made any errors in the above, I will be corrected by others.

It really depends in which area you will be working. Some can be more "difficult" than others.

I have just come across this site and I think you guys are doing a great job. I am a UK national currently considering a career opportunity with QP, and I would be most grateful for assistance with a number of questions that I have in this respect.

How many grade levels are in QP?

What is the salary range for a grade 17 employee?

How negotiable is the salary in QP?

How often is salary reviewed?

Are there any performance bonuses?

What other allowances are payable?

How adequate is the housing allowance?

Any other general comments on relocating from the UK to work for QP greatly appreciated.

Apologies for the long list of questions - I am just not familiar with the remuneration structure in the region/country.

Many thanks for your help.

Hi

I'm a westerm expat and have recently been offered a senior role at Qatar Petroleum. However, I've read some comments on here regarding 'issues' within QP such as petty bureaucracy, poor management, mega politics, poor HR practices etc. If anyone is willing to give me any information via PM regarding these type of issues, anonymously/in confidence, I'd welcome the information greatly. I am teaching in UK with more than 10 years experience around the world, and still think about moving in Qatar.

So Is there anybody teaching in QP? if so, can you please let me know about the salary range and housing. I think there is a free-rent house included in the package, but I don't know if it's furnished or not and if not, do they pay any fees for moving out of UK.

depends on the organisation and on how much importance (in the wider scheme of things) they attach to the job.

Two years experience for a Co-ordinator role doesn't appear that much.

This forum seems to be very useful.

Hope all of you can clear my doubts as well.

I am an Indian, born and bred in Qatar. I've 2 years of working experience in 2 organisations in the UK and a few summer jobs here at Doha for a short stint of time.

I have an MBA from UK and and Engineering degree from India.

I have been interviewed for a profile that matches with being a mediator between a Technical IT team and the Business team (Vice versa as well). Ideally a Business/Project Coordinator role.

I was wondering what sort of a pay package I should ask for, ie) with the full works.

Do pour in.

Thanks in advance..

Hey all,

I am from the States, currently living in Egypt. I have applied for the post of nursery teacher and offered the following:

5,500 Qatari Rial/month+ Shared villa with the rest of the staff+ electricity paid bills+ air flight tickets+ one month paid vacation+3 weeks paid end of service.

Is it worth it? will I be able to save any money?

NB: I still have one year to go at my university here in Egypt. I major in Finance and accounting. If I accept the offer this means I'll be postponing my degree for a whole year. I'm an A+ student and a hard worker.

Do I further negociate with the director of the nursery or forget the whole thing? (she also offers NO medical insurance claiming that it's free in Doha)

i think evem QR 12k is not valid as u wont find this villa range, if u wana have a villa to move in immedoatly ths wont be less than QR 14k,,plus the school fees is almost QR 12-15k pr child per year,

and of course life style increase as for example : an egg cartoon used to cost QR 14 Riyak now its QR 27.75,

so push this 28 to 32 at least to stay comfortably.

cheers

For 2,000 riyals it just isn't worth it, unless as Dweller says, it is a way of long-term career promotion. If he needs that particular experience on his reseume and he wouldn't get it at home, sure, but if he just wants to save money, then 2,000 riyals isn't going to cut it, particularly if he has an debts at all denominated in pounds or NZ dollars.

I would have thought your salary is reasonable and now I'm surprised why it is not so?  I could only guess that the housing allowance or accommodation is already part of QR45K, hence that could be the reason.  However, if this amount does include the accommodation, should I consider it reasonable, for someone from a western country such as Australia or the United States?

I am sorry but i would like to tell in Qatar the same in other nations also....we can not remove politics. Even you are top ranking board passer or whatever, if you come to Qatar, your competetors, (a cousin or friends or whatever u call of that in position) the competetion will be too hard. They are always prioritizing their cousin or friend and offer good package even that cousin or friends of them does'nt know anything......report on duty, sit, drink coffee or tea, smoke, talk to mobile or telephone for almost 4 hours making the line soo busy that client & costumer can not able to reach the company......

Thomas, I know I am replying to an old posting. Please let me know if there is a possibility of getting a senior position job. I have posted one in the forum today with my details.

Would appreciate your help with pointers. Any application thru HR doesn't get the attention. So, an application thru people who are already employed in the company would carry weight.

Thanks

Hi Alien,

Thanks for your reply. I was wondering if 3000 for accomodation would be enuf if I can get a room for myself for that amount(not sure if I can get it as furnished accom),office provides transport, so if I keep 750 for non working days transport and 750 for food (I'm vegetarian) and about 1000 for misc expenditure it will work out to 5500 so I'll have 2500 as savings. Does my bugeting sound reasonable and feasible.

Thank You

By ALIEN• 8 years 9 months ago.
ALIEN

It depends on how you would like to live. If you can live in a sharing room, I think you can start with this salary. However, if you wish to have an independent accommodation, it will be very difficult for you to save a penny.

Yes, these allowances too were part of salary structure in the past....I remember.

Your information is an addition to my knowledge that it was prevailing in companies other than from underdeveloped countries as well...Thanks.

COLA was a common payment to all nationalities in KOC for a number of years. Certainly up to the invasion by Iraq.

It wasn't limited to secondees from organisations in underdeveloped countries. It was also common in many other Gulf State based companies, including some of the major state owned oil companies. It's only in more recent years that it has been incorporated into the general rates of pay.

Other payments that have disappeared were "dry ration allowance" and "water and kerosene allowance" to name just a couple.

as the accomodation and food is free....you salary as per designation/responsibility level is not bad. however, job in hse for higher salaries than that of yours are being offered in Doha these days. it all depends on your qualification, experience and chance to get a good offer.

COLA is paid to workers in organizations originally from under developed countries and doing business in Gulf and it is particulary paid to workers who are sent overseas for temporary or permanent transfer from their country of origin.

I think you will find that overtime (certainly in the oil sector) is based on basic salary. I didn't think anyone still paid COLA (unless it's recently been introduced)

By ALIEN• 8 years 9 months ago.
ALIEN

Many QL members and visitors have contributed a lot on this topic especially dweller (many thanks). However, I still have few questions regarding salary break up. My questions are particularly for calculation of overtime for workers. As I know, overtime is to be calculated on Basic + COLA.

Is there standard salary break down defined anywhere?

What does Qatar Labour Law say for the salary break down?

What is best practice for salary break down prevailing in the market here in Doha?

Any information on this would be appreciated.

Hi everyone, I am an engineer with MSc. Degree in quality management and 10 years of experience in organisations structures and development as well as quality management systems professional trainer.Recently,I got an offer for an organisation development position in Qatar, I was offered a net salary 2000$ and allowances 1000$, they said that it is acceptable for living in Qatar as a start having 3000$, I am expecting to get a detailed package offer within 2 days and I was wondering if this offer is acceptable as a start salary for such position in Qatar, or should I negotiate? And what are the most important things I should ask for and should be clearly stated in the contract to ensure that all allowances are covered?

I don't know what are the living expenses in Qatar, therefore,I need an urgent advice on the range of salary+allowance in Qatar

Dear everybody

I have a job opportunity in Doha as a manager of irrigation division in one of the largest company in Qatar and they ask me to determine the amount of the basic salary I would like to take, and in addition to the basic salary they will give me (a housing, air ticket once a year, car, medical insurance, phone allowance) so any body can help me in determine the basic salary cause I don’t have any idea about that.

By dweller• 8 years 11 months ago.

To answer your question briefly.

There are so many allowances because allowances (unlike basic salary) can be reduced because they ARE allowance.

Inclusion of all those into basic salary would impact heavily on any End of Service Benefits (ESB)that you would accrue.

By dweller• 8 years 11 months ago.
dweller

I don't think you have a hope in hell of getting that information and if by any chance you did, it would be worthless.

Why don't you do it properly and undertake a salary/benefits survey complete with JD's.

Alternatively, there are surveys available for purchase.

Hi everyone. I've just been offered a monthly salary package of QR17k (basic), QR10k (housing allowance), QR2k (transport allowance)plus QR4k (other allowance). Why is the salary package split into so many allowances? It should be enough for basic expenses, and for savings, shouldn't it? Will be stationed with my wife and a young son. Thanks.

Also the salary range for computer/communications engineers for my husband when he applies for a job in qatar. thanx in advance

By KellysHeroes• 9 years 1 month ago.
KellysHeroes

My initial impression about your question is that you are over-qualified for the job. Have few questions and few comments, so bear with me:)

Have you been provided with detailed job description, duties and responsibilites?

Do you find yourself in such a job. Does it contribute to your career?

Do you think you can contribute something to their business or just be a figure in their "body shop"

The salary is definitely low. In best cases, i.e. living with minimum acceptable standards, you would save some 700$ monthly

You have to consider your personal expenses: dresses, cosmetics, dining, entertaining yourself, private transport. phone expenses. BTW, u have to check on electricity and water if it is covered by the company or you have to pay.

Bear in mind. Qatar is a consumer oriented country. You have to live with certain standards being at a good professional level.

The norm here, is that the salary does not change. Promises cannot be encashed from any bank. So do not count on the salary increase.

Unfortunately, some firms have certian restricted salary scale. Other firms decide the salaries according to nationality and gender.

I am not trying to depress you, neither I will encourage you and show the green light. Just trying to highlight certain factors that you need to consider.

Qatar is - Thank God - a safe place. But not in an absolute way. You have to be careful about the places you go to and your friends/buddies here. But in general, for ladies like you as I can tell, very mature and confident, there will be no problem.

Good luck

Hi,

i am a girl from Romania who found a job in Qatar. I want to move from my country for a period of time to save some moneya nd also to clear my head.

However i have some questions and i would highly appreciate it , if anyone here could help me and send me some feedback as i have to make up my mind.

First i need to say that in Romania i have worked per total for almost 3 years, i have a BS in international business and master degree in Marketing and business communication. I worked 1 year as business developer, 2 months in the sales department of a bank, 6 months as a junior consultant for a banking software company and now i am operation specialist for hewlett-packard

-the job offer that i found is as manager assistant for a company called azarea group that has franchises of different brand clothes stores (mango, zara etc well known in europe). the job does not sound evry challenging but it is in the fashion retail industry and it is something nice after 3 years of working only at a computer...

- they offered me 1700 usd net per month +accomodation included (with 1 more person or could happen with 3 more persons in a 2 bedroom appartment)+ transport to work, Isn;t that quite a little? i mean yes, people say it depends on where you're comming fro, but hey regardless the nationality we all pay same rent, eat food and need atransportation mean...

- they said the salary will increase after 6 months when teh training period is over but they won;t add that in the contract so i can even not believe it, since they can say alot and not respect their word

- should i go with thisoffer or try and find something online, maybe something better appears.

- some say, that otehr nationalities receive even less (not that this would make me feel any better), but i have seen alot of higher proposals than mine

- how safe is qatar per se? what is the hidden /untold stories about the human trafficking there ( i do know alot of stories about dubai, especially with tricked eastern european women and russian, kept locked in hotels and with no passportds and stuff), now this is totally scary, are tehre such stories about qatar also?

thank you and best regards,

claudia

hi all,

recently i got an offer from qatargas for rover operator.

basic =4500 qatari

transport, shift

allowance etc =1625 qatari

other than that housing, one time air fare per year and some other benefits

is the offer good enough.i am graduate in mechanical engineering with three years experience in the oil industry

By anonymous• 9 years 1 month ago.
anonymous

At present QR 16.000,-- is = to 2.178,32 GB Pounds. The rate fluctuates up and down especially after the market crash in US the GB pound exchange rate rose very quickly whereas the dollar did not suffer here as the oil prices are based on dollars.

If your living style is simple you can live very well in the Qatar.

As your housing will be supplied to you this is one of your lesser problems.

Do you know if water and electricity is included otherwise you will have to pay for this too?

In summer this is always a little higher as there is of course more consumption.

You will also probably need a car, did they offer you a car allowance?

If you have children and they go to school you will also have to pay for their school.

Depending on how much you earn now and that your husband will have to look for a job when he gets here dou will have to way the pros and cons on this.

If your husband is employed locally his salary will not be as high as it would be if he is employed from abroad. He will probably not getthe same benefits you do. It would be wise for him to look for a poisition here from England.

Good Luck with your venture.

You might want to post this in a new thread by itself. This is a pretty old thread. Might get a few more responses that way.

I think your salary offer is fair. That is tax free. I would make sure you are actually given a villa or apt and not just money for one because you will end up getting screwed. Rents are out of control here big time. Health care is the gov't health care and if you do a search on here you will find more info about that. Someone was just asking about that the other day. It is adequate but not the most pleasant experience. The plane ticket offer is pretty standard. Get it all in writing. Short memories here.

Best wishes.

If you're making this amount in your home country, don't take this offer! This cost of living here is considerably higher and your salary once here will only go up marginally compared with the cost of living. As you can tell from all the posts, people's savings are getting smaller and smaller as the cost of living is getting higher and higher.

I can't see you being able to afford living here with this offer considering you have a family with 3 kids and a maid. You could only save money with this offer if you came here as a bachelor.

As Neo2007 has stated, look around. Sounds like you have some good experience. The range of offers for similar positions is considerable between companies. You will probably arrive here, then hear of another company paying their employees 3x more. But by then you're stuck as you can't switch employers once here.

Salam Faizal...I know you..how's life..Your offer seems too low for your qualification I think. With your utility and power generation background, I forsee you should get a better pay!...One of my friend is going for Oman this month with better offer i think,12000 riyal equivalent plus allowance and overtime which make him easily to reach 15K above. With those offer, you should decline it and consider for other offer if possible.I hope you will get what you expect soon.

other than expertise on job requirements some companies here are basing salaries on where u came from and match the standard of living in ur country.if u r a qualified applicant and a national from the west most often than not ull get a better offer compared wth the guy from east of the same qualification.

whether 5-7QR monthly is a good deal depends on which industry and ur position are u in.how to manage it will depend on ur living standard.many expats here hav salaries way below ur offer and survived.

Definite contract employee's are still placed in company accomodation. I know some people who were definite and lived in Al-Bayan for few years and when they were offered indifinite contract, they were given housing allowance and asked to leave the compound. I also know few who are still definite and staying in company accomodation. Now with the current situation, company accomodation is the best option as if somebody like to rent a villa like one in al-bayan, he as to pay somewhere in the range of 16,000-18,000 per month. QP will pay the same person around 10,000 - 11,000 as the rent. So, staying in company accomodation is actually a better deal now.

Have QP changed their policy of late?

It depends what type of contract you are gtting from QP. If its definite contract, you will be placed in company accomodaition. As far as transpotation is concerned, you will get a loan (interest frre) to buy a car

There seems to be a fair amount of work for English speaking teachers here in Qatar, with or without qualifications. As in all situations salary structure changes from school to school.

Most English schools use the British curriculum, even for children who are ESL. You could expect anything from QR6000 p/m upwards. It depends on the school and on your qualifications. I have heard that some nationalities get paid less/more than others.

I would suggest sending your cv through to as many schools as you can, as soon as possible. You have the added advantage of being 'local hire' as your husband will be your sponsor, thus cutting the cost for the school.

The situation is sad but that is the reality here. The onlyway to correct the situation is that all low paid workers boycott this place until proper standards are set, forcing employers to compenaste them adequately. But I don't think it will happen in our life time. Supply is far greater than demand for the said catogories and in every single boycotter there are thousands in the waiting list to replace them. So that's it.

but i cant undestand following matters..

educated people get Huge sallery, accomondation, Loan, Vehicle, family visa ,Holidays, ext ext ext and they work only 8 hours. working days 5 days per week.friday and suterday are holidays for them.

but uneducated Poor people,

like labours, House maids,Drivers are get only QR500 to QR800 per month. and they have to work full day. No holidays. no any good accomondation,No any time for breakfast lunch dinner. they have to work almost 16 hours. Most of House maids and House drivers are working Early morning 5am to mid knight 12pm.

I replied in detail on the other thread but I think you can live well on this package.

Regarding the Police Clearance Certificate this is a standard requirement now for obtaining a visa here.

Its easy to get one from the UK, but slow. You need a relative or freidn to go into your local police station and ask for this form. You will have to fill out a sheet (fax is fine) and pay them 10 pounds to process the certificate.

One word of warning though, don't delay - since it can take upto 40 days to be processed by law and there is no way to expedite the process.

Hope this helps.

By dweller• 9 years 5 months ago.
dweller

As I haven't lived in Qatar since August 2004, there are probably others better qualified to comment on living costs and whether the offer is OK.

The police check report. I suspect they (QP) will accept a letter from the UK police saying that they don't issue such reports. You should check this with QP recruitment.

They should also have offered a furniture grant (not a loan) that depreciates over 4 years. After 4 years the furniture is yours.

Hope this helps and that others can comment on the level of the offer.

I would appreciate hearing your opinion on my recent offer from QP.

I am married with 2 younng kids (1 of school age). I am from UK but have been living/working in Riyadh for the past 4 years. The deal being offered is about the same as my current deal here.

The reason for our move is purely for a change of scene, but with the intention of staying in the Middle East.

Grade 14 working in Corporate Training in Doha.

Salary = 18,500QR including all uplifts

Transport = 1000QR

Accomodation = 10800QR

Family medical and dental cover

School fees for the kids

30 days holiday

1 set of family flights back to the UK per year

Interest free Car loan

The first offer they made was considerably less than this ... and only after months ( about 6 months!) of negotiations have they come to the above figures.

On the offer letter they have requested that I supply a police check report from my Home Country (UK)! Can you shed any light on what this is and how to get one.

I know this is a vague question, but in your opinion do you think this package will be enough to have a comfortable life in Doha for a family of 4?

Thanks in advance

Hello fellow forum members.

I am an Indian Instrumentation & Controls Engineer working with an international Oil & Gas consultancy company in Qatar and joined last December.

I have almost 4 years of working experience and would go as far as saying that the quality of experience which I have is as good as or better than that of an engineer with 7 to 8 years of experience (including a lot of international exposure)!

Our client is a major offshore Oil & Gas production company.

So far everyone has been impressed with the quality of work and dedication which I have demonstrated.

However, after going through this forum I believe I have been given a raw deal with an all inclusive salary of QR 14400 per month, considering that this is the Oil & Gas industry and other non-O&G professionals are raking in more Moolah.

I have been able to sustain myself since I'm a bachelor at present.

I am having second thoughts about continuing and am feeling pretty dejected.

Does anyone have any take on the subject and could someone provide an indicative figure on what would be fair for my profile?

Constructive feedback would be much appreciated.

By dweller• 9 years 5 months ago.
dweller

They may possibly increase the offer.

That course of action however causes difficulties within the organisation in that salary inequity is created. Salary inequity within QP has been a problem for years and steps taken to correct it are slowly achieving that correction.

The salary offer is (or certainly was) based on matching the individual's relevant experience to the salaries offered to similarly experienced members of the individual's peer group.

Sorry that it may appear a little vague but it's a difficult issue to explain in a small space.

To: Dweller & others,

If I were to reject the offer at this stage would they likely to give me a better offer?

I feel I should negotiate but after the firm offer is on the table (i.e. face-to-face),

Does being Euro passport holder not come into play?

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,

Za, that must be the upper limit of the basic for grade 15 in QP (they must have increased it recently because it never used to be that high). If you add the rest of the allowances you should end up with a pretty decent package, depending somewhat on your country of origin.

Im just wondering if the thread-starter managed to find a job with his/her terrible spelling - 4 different ways of writing salary, not to mention the rest? I'm not a native English speaker and make mistakes too, but at least be consistent...

I've been told that short term (month to month) leases were hard to come by. My company is looking into short term housing arrangements but I fear I'll have to pay a premium for accommodations. I'll probably give it a shot in the hopes that the job will become more permanent or something else comes along back in the US.

I work in the IT Security industry. I get paid 45000 QAR +. The cost of living here in Qatar is much higher than living in my home country. The salary is a little more than I earned in my home country, but I find I can not save as much as I did at home due to the VERY high cost of living here. I know there is no personnel tax, but still, one more rent rise and it is better to go home than stay. I do not know how all of you others can live on 10 to 16,000 QAr's per month. I have had to do a budget to try and help with the saving. I have reduced my out goings by buying a cheaper car, budgeted on weekly shopping and still the continual price rises are going on.

Many of the European workers here are looking at going home and advising others not to come here.

Qatar has one of the highest inflation rates in the world, and the highest in the Middle East. I understand that many people from low income countries think the money is great, but if you have lived in a western world, were you are paid for your education, work effort and skills regardless of you nationality, race or religion you know it is not so good here (with regards to money). The people are good, the country is good (except for the way they treat expats). So in all, the cost of living, the greed of the locals here will kill the growth of this country.

Hello All,

I am a new user to the site and found it due to an offer to work in Qatar (Still waiting on figures).

However during my search through this forum I have seen some excellent feed back on the things to look for in a contract before committing.

I am an Australian (Pom Expat) and work in the Construction Industry and have been in Supervision/Superintendent/Project Coordinator Roles for the last 15 years.

I have been on a very good wicket (Ex Cricketer) for the last 3 years as a contractor and averaging between $150-200,000 Australian Gross per year plus Super

Would anyone be within this industry at a Site Management level that could give me some ideas on what to expect? The company is a major player in Saudi for portable buildings and according to the agency I have used they say that the salary wont be as much but when you take in to consideration of your Net earning and no cost of living except for food you are better off.

But looking at some of the early threads it looks like Qatar cost of living is a lot higher than in Australia. Info I have on the benefits so far is

Good Expat Salary

Relocation assistance,

Family Status (Wife and 2yr old Child

All found accomodation

private schooling,

air tickets each year

fully maintained vehicle

Medical cover.

Would appreciate some direct response by perhaps an Australian or anyone who could give me some advice.

Thanks and look forward to your feedback.

Thanks Dweller for your feedback (it consistently seems pragmatic which I appreciate). I didn't believe annual salary increases existed anywhere these days so it seemed strange that the Bayt Salary survey makes such a feature of them.

Unlike the UK and many other countries, there are no "annual salary increases" within Qatar to accommodate general inflation.

I can only comment on how QP operated. They (QP), have a history of taking no action for a number of years (in my 15 years within QP there were just two general increases)and then a tendency to over react. There were however major changes in grades and benefits in 1996, something which I personally strove against.

Annual merit increases tend to be performance based and were within a limited budget (the QP average was 3% with a maximum award of 5%). I don't know if those figures are still valid.

It depends which organisation you are with as to how they operate.

It would be possible for any company (given that they were willing) to guarantee the base country currency of any employee by absorbing the cost of exchange rate fluctuations. Given the historical variations in exchange rates, they appear cyclical and eventually are balanced out.

Spongebob did you accept your offer with Qatari Diar?

Thanks I found it as part of my research into the region to help me decidee if I should come out there or not and the piece on disgruntled people in Qatar is worrying and reflects a number of the comments in here.

However I am curious to understand from those that are actually living and working in Qatar what are companies policies to salary raises ie do they negotiate individually each year or apply a company increase across the board?

Thanks

Useful information in that link SpongeBob, thanks.

Having had a quick scan, I picked out a few of the numerous details relevant to Qatar.

On page 3, for example, it states that average salary raises in Qatar have been around 17 per cent, however, cost of living has increased by around 27 per cent.

Page 5 - 'Expected' raises over the next 12 months come in at just under 20 per cent (19.92 per cent), although they report a different figure for the raise that people felt they 'deserved', 32 per cent.

Page 7 - In general, across GCC, 37 per cent of respondents reportedly wanting to leave their current country to return home or go to another GCC country. Qatar reports the highest number of disgruntled residents.

elias2000 Assuimg that you are coming from lebnan, the salary seems ok but with 4000 housing you will probably not be able to find a decent 2 bed apprtment and have to spend/add from 1000 - 2000 QR towards the rent.

Hi All,

Great forum, very informative. I am a Western English-speaking Canadian, who has BSc (biology/Chemistry) and a MSc in chemistry (biochemistry), and several years experience teaching first, second, and third year university biology, chemistry, and biochemistry courses.

I have several questions. What kind of base salary could I expect for a fulll time teaching position in Qatar, assuming housing (villa or apartment), health, and transportation is included? I am married but have no kids. How would the base salary compare to say, equivalent jobs in Dubai? I am also curious whether I would be seriously considered for a teaching position as I do not have a BEd or a PhD.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

hi! it seems like this is a very active thread and i'd like to join you guys, if you may.

my husband is being offered by qatar chemicals a basic salary of 3900 + 5000 housing (if he brings his family over to qatar, thats me and our 1 yr old baby + plus shift allowance of 24 a day and 200 for transpo.

presently, our combined income ( i work too) is around USD2500 (we are not from the US) however, 1/3 of our salary goes to taxes.

we are attracted to the fact that in qatar, we do not need to pay tax. (which in our present job amounts to USD750 monthly)

Also, are wives allowed to work in qatar?

your inputs can be of great help.

thanks!

buenas noches

suerte

I know this forum is for Qatar but I have not found something similar for the UAE so that is why I am writing here. Does anyone know what the salary range is for a British Expat who is willing to look for a job in Dubai as a Treasury or Finance Manager? A range in either GBP/AED or USD is satisfactory.

Many thanks

The Qatar oil sector does not establish salaries based upon qualifications alone.

It depends on the job that you will be doing as you will probably have experienced in Saudi.

Sorry but I don't have any experience in the automotive area and have been out of Qatar for a number of years. I do keep up to date with the oil industry packages and policy but not officially.

Greetings,

I am engineer in the USA with about 15 years experience and a masters degree. I recently got offered a job in Doha that pays 18,000QR base salary, plus 14,000QR housing allowance, plus free medical and schooling. I plan to bring my wife and children with me if I go. I will need at least a 3 bedroom house, so I am guessing that all the housing allowance will be spent on rent. Question is: is this offer good? thanks

Good day to all.

We are a Latin American couple living in Dubai, I am unemployed and evaluating job offers. The best so far came from a company based in Doha. Because we understand how expensive Dubai is, we decided to keep a low profile life style, e.g.: we live with basic stuff and keep a 'backpacking' state of mind (you never know when you will be invited or will have to leave...), a night out on special occasions, prefer to eat at home, have relatively inexpensive hobbies and we are definitely not fashion-trend concerned.

The package I have been offered:

- Basic salary: QR 12,500.00

- Transportation: QR 1000.00

- Accommodation: company provided or QR 4,400.00

- If accepting company provided accommodation: 2 bedroom apartment and QR300 for utilities

- If accommodation is not furnished: QR600 allowance

There are additional benefits: joining/repatriation tickets, joining/repatriation freight allowance (200Kg) annual leave ticket, EOSB gratuity, annual leave (30d), school fees.

A few questions have not been answered by the company yet, such as: which area in Doha will the accommodation be? health benefits (medic/dental)?, life insurance?, and a few more.

I am also planning to ship my car to Doha, and will have to "ship" my bank liabilities; these issues add a bit more of complexity to the situation.

Your comments and suggestions based on the above information are welcome.

Shoukra! / Gracias! / Thank you!

There are other (small) companies based in Dukhan but all related to the oil industry and thus QP.

There may also be an opportunity to work at the school.

Chunk, your wife will have no problem making friends with other wives and the scene is very sociable.

A bit like village life in the UK.

By anonymous• 9 years 8 months ago.
anonymous

There is no other place in Dukha except QP. So your wife has no chance there. Try your luck with QP.
