Food, Health, and Environment in Qatar

To all my Dear QL members,

Welcome to this group where we will discuss everything related to Food, Health and our Beautiful Environment...if only we can still call it beautiful.

Lets eat good food, healthy food, work towards being healthy and then we will all try to preserve our environment.

How does that sound?

fruits and water

does water taste bitter after you have eaten a fruit?

i have felt so frequently, normally i love the taste of water (dont say its tasteless) but after i have eaten a fruit, like apple, water tastes bitter.

has anyone else felt this?
is this becasue of the acidic/citric nature of the fruit?

have a fruity day

Smoke without a Fire

Introducing the world's first "electronic cigarette" to help you quit smoking. According to Scott Fraser, Vice President of SBT (Holdings) Co. Ltd., the makers of the Ruyan e-cigarette, "The nicotine is delivered to the lungs within seven to 10 seconds. It feels like a cigarette, looks like a cigarette, it even emits vapour. In many ways, it is like an actual smoking experience."

Ruyan -- roughly translated as "like smoking" -- consists of a built-in microprocessor and atomiser that combine air intake with nicotine from a cartridge. When inhaled, it gives off a vapour that the company says is non-toxic.

Small English town implements total ban on plastic bags

Town dumps plastic bags

Shopkeepers in the Devon town of Modbury are claiming a European first, by being entirely free of plastic bags.

Plastic bags have been consigned to the bin by traders in a Devon town in a bid to be more green.

All 43 shopkeepers in Modbury are taking part in the initiative, following a suggestion by a wildlife camerawoman who lives in the town.

Rebecca Hosking was moved to tears as she filmed marine life off Hawaii for the BBC2 programme, Natural World (you can watch some of the film using the link on this page).

"What really brought it home for me was one day filming a turtle," she said.

"It had a plastic bag in its mouth and was slowly dying, there was nothing we could do.

Health Tip

Disinfect your toothbrush by soaking it in Hydrogen Peroxide solution(3%).

Especially useful after a cold or bacterial type of illness and for children.

Be aware that you can't leave the solution exposed to light and air as it breaks down quickly.

Summertime, Jelly Fish Time

We had a couple of bad jellyfish experiences with kids, ours and others, last year.
There's a product sold on Amazon that offers protection from jellyfish and has a SPF rating of 30. We didn't have this stuff so we resorted to a more readily available remedy; urine.

Deodorant

If anyone is interested in the debate about the safety, or lack of, of aluminum (aluminium) chlorohydrate in deodorants there's an alternative in the local market. It's called Deo-Nat. I'm not a dealer or distributor and have nothing to gain by advertising it. I have, however, made the switch to it.

Slim but healthy

If you are one of those people who enjoy a slim and slender body, do you think you are healthy?
Its common knowledge that as the weight increases, so does health problems...but I know of slim people who take it for granted that they are healthy and eat any garbage, and feel they dont need to exercise, because then they might just dissappear.

what do you feel?

i feel everyone needs exercise, esp in this part of the world where life is luxurious and sedantary to a certain extent.

Dubai: Fully biodegradable packaging is now being used in one of Dubai's eco-conscious stores offering shoppers an alternative to plastic-packaged foods.

The Organic Foods and Cafe outlets in Dubai are the first to have made a total switch to using fully biodegradable packaging in an on-going campaign to help the environment.

The stores have now replaced traditional expanded polystyrene trays with those made from PLA - an environmentally-friendly corn-based polymer. The biodegradable packaging decomposes in just weeks compared to years, or even centuries.

Eco-friendly buildings for future generations

Some parts of the Gulf are eco-aware, so why is Qatar lagging behind so far? See article below about eco-friendly buildings in UAE.
