Qatar Living Members Making a Difference
As reported by Ramesh Mathew for the Gulf Times (photo by Thajuddin)
AS many as 157 workers, who suffered substantial loss in a fire that ravaged their camp in Doha on Sunday, received an additional assistance of QR600 each from their employer, the HBK Group of Companies, yesterday.Over 400 workers housed in the gutted camp had been paid an emergency aid of QR150 each the very next day of the fire. About a 100 workers, who are staying in the portacabins unaffected by the flames, are to receive today several bags of relief materials collected by community website Qatar Living.
Volunteers from Qatar Living delivered the goods last night at the new camp of the company on Street 37 of the Industrial Area.
“A company official has agreed to transport the relief materials to the affected camp today,” a volunteer told Gulf Times.
A number of philanthropists had responded to appeals made through the website and donated a large number of blankets, clothing materials, utensils, footwear, provisions, cooking oil and toiletries.Involved in the humanitarian drive were many nationalities, including Americans, Canadians, Indians, Pakistanis, Filipinos and Qataris.
A charity worker kown by the nickname ‘Speed’ among the Qatar Living fraternity was at the forefront mobilising relief materials.
‘Speed’ told Gulf Times that when he and his colleagues gave the appeal soon after the disaster, they never expected such an overwhelming response from visitors to the website. He said many of those who gathered yesterday had been involved in similar missions earlier and were only too happy to help the workers affected by the fire at the labour camp.
Some Qatar Living members had come to the camp with their vehicles, fully loaded with relief materials, a good portion of which were new.
“Of course, we collected a lot of used materials too as we thought it could be useful for the workers, who were left with literally nothing,” one member said.An HBK official said about 200 workers affected by the fire had already been moved to the new accommodation on Street 37 of the Industrial Area.
“At present everything is normal for the majority of the affected workers and they do not require any further assistance,” he said.
Meanwhile, for the second day running, members of the India Fraternity Forum distributed clothes and other essential materials to the affected workers at their camp.

Great job Speed and ...Great job Speed and Scarlett. I agree with Owen - it was the best feeling in the world to be able to help out last night. My husband and I were honored to be involved.
A special thanks to Darude. Last night my husband and I got separated from the group along with a couple of other cars. Just when we thought it was hopeless there was Darude standing in the round-about looking for his lost troops!
Great job by everyone who organized, participated and kept us from getting lost.

I truly hope that some of ...I truly hope that some of the items that were donated are shared with the people at the first camp we visited last night. I hated driving away without leaving anything, especially after they saw we had cars full of items and overheard the conversation that we brought those things for them.
They, in my opinion, were really in need.

While we are happy...some ...While we are happy...some people are maybe jaelous or maybe they don't have good heart..this morning i heard words that makes my ears uncomfortable:
"they will be given 600QR each head...and the company will be responsible to them,, that Qatar government is there, and blah and blah"..
For me, whatever, as long as i give help and im happy. I can not believe some people behaving like that. How they can sleep in very comfortable bed, eating delicious food and enjoying, etc....while this laborers are suffering.
I am wondering if they have heart...If they never cooperate, why they need to talk more that will insult the sacrifices of good people?

QL Can Do Anything ! ! ! ...Good morning folks,
Alright this is going to take a bit of reading...(and writing...lol)
Anyways coming down the evening last night,
What I observed and experienced last night by being a part of it, truly represents a stature, a elite class, a perfect sort of bonding (I know too big a word..but still...lol!!!) that we as being a part of this great website namely QL have towards each other...
I think we truly depicted that, we might be of any race, religion, community, secular or religious views whatever be it, but that CANNOT HAPPEN AT THE COST OF HUMANITY...!!!
Last night at the collection point there were just too many people of us and I think, it clearly showed that inspite of having initial hurdles (which was quite alright) we were HAVING FUN WITH EACH OTHER'S COMPANY (ALRIGHT LADIES, I KNOW YOU LIKE ME ! ! !LOL), WE WERE SPENDING A GREAT DEAL OF KNOWING AROUND, HELPING AROUND WITH THE GOODIES, AND ON TOP OF ALL ENJOYING OURSELVES...I MEAN tell me you dont get too often being an expat to drive around half of Doha with the HAZARD LIGHTS and going as being part of an OFFICIAL ENVOY, freaks I enjoyed that thoroughly (not to mention that Speed and his new found LOVE (LOL) screwed up with the directions at the first....and then you had to have KSA to the rescue act, and when KSA screwed up (JUST ALMOST) DARUDE came to the rescue act...) so all this was pretty fun...
I think the best of the strength of Character and Spirits were shown when we had to drive around half of Doha from one point to another (industrial Area) at about 2100hrs in the night...which again was a lot of fun, with me, Khanan, Oryx, KH, having a bit of a Photo Session on one of the construction vehicles there...lol...
A ride pretty enjoyable...
Lastly, I would definitely thank a few people here for the efforts...
1) Ofcourse it has got to be SPEED: To start, coordinate, and pull all this together, (Freaks he got into the damn newspaper...hmmm...all a damn publicity stunt, he should contest in the damn elections...lol)...but yes Speed certainly pulled on and counted on our strengths of having fun with being together and at any point, at any time, at any place...GREAT JOB Sir ! ! !
2) PWB: To carry out an equally amazing stint in the Morning Hours and then again having come and join us in the evening hoursfor some MORE Support and ofcourse how can I forget her 2 lovely wonderful angels...infact (as usual as being ME...lol) Her daughter was so cute and lovely and just like the adults, always trying to help and carry bags around from the car to the footpath ... GREAT JOB< MOM & KIDS >
3) Scarlett: For keeping the motion going on and on and on QL it was more like a Donation Drive sort of stuff...
4) And Ofcourse to all others who stopped by after work, before work, and during work, to drop the goods down at the Collection Point, guys and gals a FANTASTIC JOB by everyone present there Physically and Mentally to pull this off in such a splendid way...
So yea there goes my Vote of Thanks,
So Ladies, Gentlemen, Boys, Girls and all other present there and supported this...
FROM QL and everyone:
A BIG THANK YOU ! ! !
*We need to pat ourselves*....
CHEERS EVERYONE ! ! !

Great Work fellas ...who ever came last night and stayed till end and those who just came and left early.
KSA i think you need to go back to driving school. so when the traffic police direct you to a route you go that way NOT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE.
RS man i cant believe i was standing in front of you waving turn right turn right and you went straight down lol damn cant you see a pole standing tall in middle of round-about.
Ah But really you guys did a great job last night.
so now can we go on long drive at night :D

LOL, Darude :) ...what can I say ... It was a great pleasure to see all of you yesterday and yes ... we did a great job and I'm proud of everyone who was there. In the end regardless of losing our way [being delayed actually nothing more] we reached those people ... I was waiting after we reached the first dead end and ... hoooooffff KSA coming too fast and flashing and ... ok let's follow ... we are supposed to go left but ... hmmmm this road is dark and KSA ... we are not planning to go to the borders :D guess he heard me because he made a U-Turn and I almost jumped on the road laughing :)
It was nice, waiting for the others to catchup with us, moving again and finally ... mission accomplished and everyone was so happy ...
Got a lot and a lot to say here, but ... I was really speechless last night ...
All thanks to my friends who could not come and drop their stuff one day before [Dear Friends from Filipino expatriates Group] and until the last moment also after work we were passing by to collect the rest ...
The guys who could not make it ... thank you for that as well ...
