Qatar Airways bans inflight mobile phone calls

tallg's picture

This can only be good news! I can't think of anything worse than someone sat next to you having a phone conversation. "HELLO..I'M ON A PLANE"!!!

QATAR Airways is to ban mobile phone calls on its flights to avoid air rage.

The airline is allowing text calls, and is providing WiFi and high spead broadband access for laptops.

But chief executive Akbar al Baker said research showed that 80 per cent of customers do not want mobile calls to be allowed inflight.

"We will have the facility on board - it's just a question of flicking a switch. But we have decided not to allow mobile calls on planes for a very simple reason - comfort. We don't want people to start speaking loudly in the cabin on a night flight.

"I am sure other airlines will introduce it but in time they will turn it off," he told Times Online.

The airline will have broadband and WiFi across its fleet, he said, but the airline is the first to say 'no' to live calls. Air France has already introduced calls on some flights and Ryanair plans to introduce the facility in June.

The article continues, talking about GTL and the new airport.

No, new technology has allowed this to be possible. Excellent news from Qatar Airways. The last thing one wants is some mindless moron chattering away loudly during a flight.

qatarisun - Many airlines will start allowing mobile phone calls on flights now the technology is available. So technically Qatar Airways aren't banning it, they just aren't enabling it in the first place.

qatarisun said actually.. you know .. ...

once I was travelling with Lufthansa, and they had a FREE INTERNET ACCESS!! that was amasing! Since then i try to travel only with Lufthansa, but every time the flight is taken over by QatarAirways, or Canadain Air, or whatever, therefore no internet is provided...
britexpat, May be QR don't have this advanced technology yet?

deedee said I hope all airlines ...

follow suit. I have no problem with a short phone call before take off and after landing "Hello, I'm here, meet me at baggage claim" but I will make it a point not to fly on any of the airlines that decide to allow this new technology for the whole flight.

I have flown Qatar airways, Etihad and KLM and on all the flights although it says mobiles are to be switched off there is always one moron who has to have a full blown loud conversation about nothing in particular, thank goodness for headphones!!!

Yes brandylady, I've noticed on flights around the Middle East that there's always a series of BEEP-BEEPs and the odd ring tone going off as the airplane approaches the airport and gets within range of a mobile antenna. The flight attendants never seem to do anything about.

Yes this is what I thought too - nothing worse on a flight to wherever and the psrson sitting next to you gabbing out loud to another - oh so annoying.

Yeah, some airlines are bringing it in...oh heavens..

samiko said tallg, I thing the ban ...

tallg, I thing the ban happened long long ago. I don't think that during flight (on cruise) some body can use his mobile, because there is no coverrage by the cell network, except for satelite mobiles. Just for information, the use of cell phone is possible during take-off and landing, but is not allowed due to the simple reason to avoid interference with the navigational equipment of the aircraft. I've experianced several times the result of this, when a fool was calling and believe me, it's not very fun.

tallg's picture

tallg said Yes you're right, until ...

Yes you're right, until recently you could not use your phone while flying because there was no network coverage, but now the technology exists to bring network coverage to the plane, where ever it is. But Qatar Airways have decided not to enable this technology.

Obviously a cell phone will work on or near the runway. The claim that they could interfering with the aircraft's equipment is believed to be false (though I haven't researched it myself), but that doesn't excuse people who use them. If you're told to turn it off, you should turn it off.

samiko said I could agree with you about ...

I could agree with you about the technology. About the interference, it's not a claim it's a proven fact. During landing it could interfere with ILS equipment and it's dangerous.

about the service they provide already? I thought you could make a phone call (at a charge) from the handset that you use for the TV channels. On the reverse side there is a phone. Maybe i'm wrong?

Yes lima foxtrot, you can do that, but they're talking about being able to use YOUR mobile phone.

samiko - we'll have to agree to disagree about mobiles interfering with aircraft equipment, cos I can't be bothered to dig out any articles about it!

Decent-Mind's picture

Decent-Mind said The interference between ...

The interference between mobile signals and aircraft navigation is possible. Specially at the final apprauch stage where commercial aircrafts are mostly controlled by the ILS (Instrument landing system) if available at the assigned landing runway, until it touches down.

This system governs the glide slope of the aircraft as well as the lateral deviation from the center of the runway during the final apprauch stage. It is fully automatically controlled.

The whole control is done through whats called radar beacons which connects between the ground system and the autopilot where the autopilot adjusts the vertical and horizontal position to follow that beacon in order to touchdown at the beginning of the runway.
If any interference occured, it may lead to a wrong control from the autopilot and it may be too late to re-adjust the aircraft position and altitude due to the low altitude of the aircraft during the final apprauch.

Of course the pilot can manually interfere in any moment and take it on manual control in case of any surprises. But you never know how would the electromagnetic interference would occur and its effect on the control systems of the aircraft or it's navigation system.

Although the modern advanced technology in communications but you never know. The interference might still happen.
