Team Qatar - Olympics ...A little while ago I received an e-mail from my sister, who came from England to visit us in Qatar, for about 3 weeks, in February this year. I was delighted to see her good memories of Qatar and it's people are still with her.
She said:
"OLYMPIC GAMES
Just a quickie to say I am watching the opening ceremony on TV and the team from Qatar filed by, looking incredibly handsome in full Arab regalia. I felt as though they were my home country and had a surprisingly warm feeling for them. Isn't that nice?

I believe she considers herself to be something of a psychic, so let's hope her 'warm feeling' bodes well for the Qatar Team!

No wonder Qatar is not ready for Olympics... ...Just as Qatar team came along, i noticed no damn Qatari Women in the team or at least a symbolic representation!!!
For Saudi its fine, for kuwait its fine, but for Qatar who was pretending to host the Olympic Games it is simply a shame, Iran, sudan, pakistan, libya, algeria, oman, UAE, Bahrain, Irak, just to name a few had all women in their teams. Qatar as I recall was amongst 3 countries who did not have women in their team.
Were Qatar thinking of holding an all men olympics..?

Diesel ...It would be nice if you got your facts right. No Qatari female had QUALIFIED. And hence, there were no female athletes or officials. But give them a little time, they are on their way.
Attempts are going on in different sports to include females for the first time. Believe me, things are moving and it will happen in time for the next Olympics in London in 2012.
Two ladies teams i am confident will grow much in the future is athletics and shooting. And maybe even equestrianism. But please, do NOT generalise with that sweeping statement.

Everytime someone ...Everytime someone generalizes anything with regards to qatar sports and makes an ignorant statement, Greeker comes along and corrects it. Good job, am sure being in ur field u get a lot more on wats happenin in qatar sports than all the ppl in here.
jus a question: Nada zaidan, wat happened to her in terms of olympic qualification?

Face it ...Geeker, i'm sure there is a potential women athletes in Qatar, but the fact is, from what I saw, and another 3 billion people did, that Qatar is misreprenting women in general, and women athletes more specifically, it is just unacceptable for a olympic bidder to do that...
and btw quoting the pennisula :'' The United Arab Emirates were led by Sheikha Maitha Al Maktoum, the first woman to lead a Gulf nation at the Games.''

You're missing the point ...You're missing the point Diesel. I'm sure Qatar would have loved to send some of its female athletes to the Olympics, but as Greeker already stated - NONE of them qualified.
You can't just send who you want to the Olympics, they have to reach a certain world standard to qualify.

nice to see the Qatar ...nice to see the Qatar athletes too! and the Prince? with his support...

Diesel ...yes, i agree that Sheikha Maitha Al Maktoum led the UAE contingent. But once again, i believe that you did not do your research properly.
She led the contingent because she QUALIFIED For the Olympic games in taekwondo. She is a karate and taekwondo player and she had won a silver medal in karatae at the 2006 Doha asian Games.
so you see, it is the athletes who have qualified who generally lead the contingents. None of the Qataris had qualified, so none were on the contingent. I really dont think Qatar was trying to act chauvinistic with their contingent in beijing.

missed it! ...I'm in the Philippines right now and was very disappointed with the local coverage of the opening ceremony. Every few minutes they would cut to long commercial breaks, obviously because they were just waiting for Team Philippines to come out!
So I wasn't able to see many of the teams, including Qatar. Does anyone know where I can find more pictures of the Qatari team at the opening ceremony?
