Qatar to get cord-blood bank, thanks to Virgin's Branson
WOW, thats the latest development in the world of Stem Cell research and Qatar is at the centre of it. This article says that Branson has decided to move the headquarters to Doha in the newly constructed QSTP. Will this make Qatar the centre of another boom - of the stem cell research kind? The mind boggles at the thought...
Copied from the Scientific American...
Futuristic health technologies often first benefit patients in the U.S. and Europe. Now an ambitious plan backed by high-flying entrepreneur Richard Branson to start a national public-private cord blood bank in the Arab emirate of Qatar might help to ensure that the evolving science of regenerative medicine will also be able to find applications quickly within the Middle East.
The newly formed Virgin Health Bank will collect and store stem cells drawn from the umbilical cords of infants, with the permission of their mothers. A portion of those cells will be banked for that infant’s future use in the event of medical need, with the remainder going to a national public bank for research and assistance to any patient with a matching tissue type.
The company’s goal is to create a comprehensive source of stem cells that could be of particular use for treating people of Middle Eastern descent, whose tissue types are often underrepresented in the public tissue banks such as those in the U.S. and elsewhere. “This cord blood bank could end up being bigger than the U.K.’s bank quite quickly,” Branson noted at a press conference today marking the company’s inaugural board meeting in Qatar.
Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are highly prized for their ability to change into the cells of other tissues. They are nearly as versatile as embryonic stem cells—and far less controversial. Cord-blood stem cells have been used since 1988 to treat a wide variety of leukemias, thalassemias and other primarily blood-related illnesses.
The longer-term dream, however, is that the nascent technology of regenerative medicine might someday routinely use them to regrow diseased, damaged or missing tissues and organs. David Macauley, the CEO of Virgin Health Bank QSTP, cited the encouraging example last November of a woman in Spain whose diseased windpipe was replaced with one grown in the lab from her own cells.
Last week the U.K.-based Virgin Health Bank, a cord-blood service founded in 2007 by Branson and biotech entrepreneur Christopher Evans of Excalibur, announced that it was changing its name and relocating its headquarters to Doha as part of its new partnership with the Qatar Science & Technology Park. The QSTP, a massive complex of scientific research and educational facilities that formally inaugurated yesterday, is a linchpin of Qatar’s national strategy to transform itself into a world leader in health sciences and other disciplines by 2030.
Branson said today that the bank chose Qatar because “the government of Qatar and the queen in particular understood the importance of this and wanted it.” Evans said that the presence of facilities such as the Weill Cornell Medical College campus and the future Sidra Medical & Research Center (now under construction) in Qatar were also part of the country’s draw.
According to Macauley, the hope is that the Qatari program will serve as a model for the region, either by inspiring other national programs in the Middle East or by extending the reach of the Qatari one. “Obviously, a bank like this should be global and eventually will be global,” Branson remarked. “But we’ve got to get this one done first.”
The challenge will be convincing the people of Qatar—and later, the rest of the region—to participate in cord blood collection. Public education information is under development, Macauley said, adding that Islamic religious leaders had already issued a fatwa (legal pronouncement under shari’a law) approving of cord-blood collection and encouraging its use.
Evans affirmed that the cord blood bank would be operational within weeks or months. The cost to patients for storing cord blood was still under discussion, according to Hanan Al Kuwari, the managing director of the Hamad Medical Corporation, the largest nonprofit healthcare provider in Qatar and a partner in the new alliance. One possibility was that the government would underwrite the costs for Qatar’s people, she said.
All profits arising from the service, according to Eulian Roberts, QSTP’s managing director, would be reinvested back into healthcare charities. Officials of Virgin Health Bank QSTP declined to say how much investment might be involved altogether in the new venture. But Evans noted that $10 million had already been invested in the initial setup for the Qatari service.

S&T Park ...Great news for the park. Look fabulous from the road. Any word on how far along it is until the sponsors start moving in and opening up shop?

Its accurate ...This is accurate and its very exciting!
My ob at Al Ahli got me the info on it as well after I saw a newspaper article about 2 months ago.
For any of you.... please consider this. Im doing it with my little one in a couple of months and the benefits of creating a possible future for your family if needed far outweigh the minimal cost associated to it.

Already here ...This service is already available here in Qatar: Cryosave is the service name, and the cells are stored in Dubai. That is what Al Ahli are advertising. http://www.2.cryo-sa...
What I would worry about is the competence of the people harvesting the cells, as the cells need to be taken in a certain way, handled in a certain way, and transported a certain way. For 13,000 QAR (I think that was the price), I would not want to risk it.

An even better suggestion... ...Its a great idea, in the meantime there is an even better less costly and non-invasive proceedure of harvesting stem cells and the best thing is you get several opportunities to do so during your childs development as their milk teeth fall.
According to not so recent research is that the blood of freshly fallen milk teeth is rich with vital stem cells.
A parent need only purchase the specialised container that once containes the harvested tooth can be cryopreserved.
The containers can be purchased online
All thats required is a storage system to be ready and available in Qatar...But to get this suggestion through; FIRST we would need a local official allocated to this field who doesnt succumb to the throes of an inferiority complex type fit when asked by another local to review a simple and logical proposal....a tiresome event prompted by the local officials demented thoughts that sound like :- "she has one up on me , what IF shes after a job opportunity i think i may be after....when i learn to think"
And when dealing directly with those at the top of the food chain the reaction is worse as you have to deal with a more progressive strain of a similar complexity somewhere along the lines of
"finally Im someone! im making the news its my time to shine, so even if you have a logical suggestion that other countries are using for its pracicality and even if its less costly, SO LONG AS I WASNT TOLD TO COME UP WITH IT, I dont want to hear YOU say it so please go away..... and die"
The only way to make such suggestions as the logical addition of the milk teeth stem cell harveting or to even get considered in Qatar is to get a Hollywood style celebrity come and endorse its addition to the cord blood stem cell project, maybe just maybe....THEN the government may care that its actually less costly and offers that extra option that im sure the growing number of parents of children aged 5 to 10 will appreciate and benifit from giving their children a fighting chance should God forbid they ever get stricken with a fatal disease.
http://www.bioeden.c...
With one last milk tooth in my childs mouth, everytime it shakes I know I would love to have a milk tooth stem cell harvest option available in Qatar.
But I wonder...Do they really care about people lives or is this all part of yet another image promotion of Qatar in the Media?!

Stemcell banking ...It's indeed a good concept and we should accept the great efforts by our scientists to make things happen. Cordblood stem cell banking is riskfree and offers a wonderful future in regenerative medicine. Trials are on for illness like cancer, suguar related problems. It has few negative marks also, like lack of good records treatment, we don't know how many years we can cryopreserve the cells without any harm, the cells are 100% useful for only the child, chances of matching it with other members in the family are less

Could it be extended to Africa ...This is a great project and I hope Branson can opening some these health banks in places like Africa, where many types of blood diseases are prevalent. That will help these people by using the stem cell research to fight diseases like sickle cell anemia and other blood diseases. Dentist Reviews
