Traffic rules just a click away
While confusion has been prevailing among motorists over the points and fines system imposed by the Traffic and Patrol Department, the Ministry of Interior is now posting all details on its website www.moi.gov.qa.
The ‘Point System in the Traffic Violations’ link provides information about Traffic Law No 19 of 2007 which was introduced on October 2. The Ministry has stated the points system “will help to ensure safe driving and to reduce traffic-related accidents, deaths and many casualties every year”.
The link marked ‘Violations and its Fine Amounts’ covers the 14 violations which cannot be settled by fines and have to be heard by the concerned court. The site also details the 114 traffic violations that can be covered by fines. Among the violations to be heard in a court of law are violating customs and norms of public morality inside the vehicle or allowing somebody to do so.
The Peninsular reported this today so I assume these MOI web pages are new. Apologies if they're not and this is old news.

Average cost of living in Qatar ...I have read a lot of comments from this website and kind of lost. my partner just got a job offer in Doha for about QR 47,000.00 per month plus medical, car and air ticket allowances. we have not accept the offer yet as we try to work out whether it is enough for us to live there comfortably and make some savings. if this is the case, we will make the move, otherwise we are better stay where we are now. can anyone give me some rough ideas. what is the average cost of living in Qatar. we have read through others post and comments on this site for quite a while, but did not get any conclusion. some comments are positive for us but some not. we do not have children. we have quite good life now and wondering is it worth to do it now. all comments are welcome and appreciated.

I think I ran the red light this morning near the Landmark round-about and went i came back home i went to MOI site and keyed in my vehicle numbers. It's stated No Violation. But actually how long after we will know?

Ten Top Tips for driving in the Gulf.
1. Keep to your lane!
Landcruisers, BMWs and Mercedes may use the fast lane.
All other cars should keep to the middle or ‘slow’ lanes.
2. On entering a round-about, remember God preserves the Pure in Heart.
Just drive straight in and He will protect you.
3. The right lane of a round-about is reserved for taxis to drop off passengers.
4. Double parking on round-abouts is only permitted if vendors are selling National Flags or watermelons.
5. Take the right hand lane if you are turning left, and vice versa.
6. If ‘other’ types of car use the fast lane, flash your headlights and they will get out of the way.
Failing this, a gentle nudge to the bumper will do the trick.
7. Red traffic lights mean Stop! Green means Go!

Signals ...Veteran drivers are more careless on the road compare to new drivers. Giving signals when turning left or right is very important. Obedience to traffic rules and patience are very essential virtues specially when you are on the road.

We had an accident last Friday near Barwa housing Abu Hamour, my car was hit by another car at the right rear end fender. The idiot driver don't admit his mistake and told us that he is in the right position and we are not in the US. i told him wake up we're in Qatar you dumb ass that's why we let the police to investigate. Police told us to go Mamoura station the next day but when we went there the desk officer told us that based on the report it is our mistake. How come they have blind policeman here in Doha?

higher fines = more accidents ...These high fines will only result in more accidents as all the drivers stay nervous trying to watch out. My house is near a busy traffic signals and since these new fines were introduced, the accidents on this signal doubled. The poor drivers slame their brakes as soon as the green signals start to blink which results in getting rear ended. Cruisers and BMW's don't care about these fines. They need more public awareness not more fines.

Just to share:- one day ...Just to share:- one day while i was driving i turned to a lane and there is saw a land cruiser parked in the middle of the road and i had no way going, I flashed my lights to get way and the young qatari driver just moved a bit that i hardly managed to go. since the road was a dead end and once i finished visiting the place i have gone i wanted to return and still the land cruiser was stopped in the middle so again i had to ask way and the result was this young boy in a very irrespective way shouted at me and arrogantly was parking and waiting till someone was coming. I had to wait for 30 mins till all this happen and afterwards he was shouting for me to take the vehicle off the road.
well these type of low quality people spoils the image of the good qatari people who are living here. I have met many of the finest attitude qatari people but majority of arrogant idiots act stupid.
i believe driving disciplines has to be strict on the locals as same as the ex pats.

Court case by insurance co ...I had a car accident in 2008 and I had 3rd party insurance and damage to other car was more than 10000 QR so they have filed a case in court . I have left qatar in 2009 and now my guarantor has been asked to come to court. Pls advise how to close this case.

By all respect, I believe ...By all respect, I believe that we (as expatriates) need to respect and abide by the Qatari Traffic Law.
I had an incident last week where I went to the airport to drop my brother. Since the airport was crowded and busy; I was dropping him off at the spot where it says (max 2min allowed). I got out of my car to help my brother get the luggage out of the car (which took me max. 15 sec). Even if i had stayed in the car; I was not able to move my car because of the traffic infront of me. Anyways, Within this time, the police came and asked for my license and gave me a ticket. We asked him for the reason and he was not able to explain why. He just handed the ticket out and walked away. After 3 days, I saw a violation of 500 Qr. and 3 points. I do not know how to explain this further. This is insane.
At this point, I assume that under no circumstances should the driver get out of the car while dropping someone off at the airport. This is a new lesson learned and thought of sharing it with my fellow QLovers.

Is it just me or does anyone ...Is it just me or does anyone else think it's time for a point system rework? I got in a lot of trouble for what I consider a minor offense and I am still paying for it. You should see how my insurance rates went up! Not pausing for a full two seconds at a stop sign should not be penalized as harshly as it is, at least in my opinion.

Re: ...I got notice of these new law. An HR representative passed them along from above (someone at Qatar Foundation) along with a warning to be careful. The traffic has increased dramatically in the time I have been living in or visiting Qatar ,but here – I even drive at night. On the major thoroughfares, there are speed cameras, and people are paying attention! There's also a fine that's not on the website for the MOI...if you don't pay your ticket within the 2 month period, you get fined QR1 per day until you pay. Then the extra amount is added on to the total bill. Just found that tidbit out last week.
