Thanks for a successful Anniversary get-together
It was another successful get-together. Once again we have shared a happy afternoon and have met new friends.
Thanks to all those who came.
A special thanks to all the committee members:
The venue/food committee who worked to find a venue and pick the food we all enjoyed.
The registration/membership committee who prepared the nametags, handled the finances and video presentation of the past events

great party! ...hmmmm... sounds like you folks know how to party! well in future you can organize weekly mini-events (easier to organize) having a more social relevance at the same time boring hehehe! well seriously, i hate seeing FILEX (or pinoys for that matter) members as an exclusive bunch of party people. it's good to see events that borders around "community service" apart from age old tradition of fiesta & karaoke... here are examples:
1. weekend trainings & seminars for free like english & computer courses to help admin staff to enhance their skills.
2. swap meet where folks can sell their personal items or swap them w/ other filex members. back home we call this "one man's treasure".
3. outback bbq. how about grill on the dunes?
4. fund raising event like auctions ie. books, collectibles, etc... the funds can help our co-filipinos in distress. you'll always find one at the phil embassy "runaway housing". it's a small porta-cabin at the embassy grounds where runaway maids seek shelter...
etc etc etc... well its up to your creativity folks.
treysdad, anything in your calendar about this? suggestions?

Yes, fortunately we know how to organize a party even though we are just simple OFWs. (by the way your comment was uncalled for and unfair to those who organized this event)
Unfortunately you did not bother to attend the event and you would have found out that we are not "exclusive bunch of party people".
Our forum is already doing a lot of "community service". Many now know the visa process, documents authentication, drivers license process, etc...
Our DEMOGRAPHICS tell that many of our members are people who have time only for work during office days and internet in the evenings. Their weekends are spent on house chores and time with family or a small group of friends who are usually their officemates as well.
So they need these "age old tradition of fiesta and karaoke" as break from the monotony of their OFW routine and widen their circle of friends and share the fun they are missing with new friends and people who treat them as family even for just a few hours.
And this is the reason why we organize these social gatherings. There are already a lot of Filipino organizations who do a lot of "community service". This forum just serves to be a communication arm for them. Because many of these "community service" courses lack participation due to lack of advertisement and communication, this forum is way for many kababayans to know all these. The information we dessiminate is already our "community service".
1. english and computer classes. - This is being done at the POLO office. At times they even offer Arabic classes.
2. Swapping/selling /fund raising or anything to do with financial dealings is out because we have learned it the hardway that problems with money breaks and destroys a lot of friendships.
3. BBQ - yes this was discussed yesterday since we have done this last year at Wakrah beach. But BBQ at the dunes is still a question mark since unfortunately not all have a 4x4 like you do. Guess what, most of us still use public transporation or japanese/korean cars with stuffed toys displayed at the back window.
I think you should know the majority of your demographics to understand what suits them well and not impose you ideas upon them no matter how grand or well meaning they are. Know how to sell your ideas.
Yes, there are noteworthy causes that can be done but there are so many Filipino organizations doing this already and what they need is assistance on participation and communication. This forum helps them out by dessiminating information to as many people as possible.
I hope you participate in our future gatherings to know how a bunch of welcoming and great people the simple OFWs are.
I hope this enlightens all of us as well.

at an early age i was taken away from my homeland. everytime i am within filipino communities, i always feel this "kuyog" mentality... not that i am unable to relate to them, but my foreign ideas seem to offend them. perpahs ganyan talaga tayo mga pinoy, territorial... never wanting to see the other side of the world whether it's right or wrong.
