Appeal for QL donations for needy Labourers!

A FIRE ripped through a Doha labour camp yesterday – gutting the site and
sending property and valuables belonging to 600 workers up in smoke.
The blaze broke out at 1.30pm while the camp was all but deserted save for a security guard and a couple of other men.
No casualties were reported but as thick smoke filled the sky above Ain Khalid, many workers raced back to the camp to find all their worldly goods destroyed.
“I came home about 3pm and tried to go inside as I
have money and personal belongings inside, but it was too dangerous,” said one labourer who works as a painter. “I have never seen such a fire in my five years here in Qatar.” According to the horrified labourers, who could only stand by as their belongings burned, a number
of men lost money in the fire. One man claimed to have lost QR2,600.
Another worker said: “The camp is home to hundreds of people. Now they have lost everything; all their personal belongings, their clothes, and even their money. Everybody is in a state of shock.”
The camp, belonging to HBK Engineering and the Power Cleaning Services, mainly consisted of temporary cabins that quickly became engulfed in the fire. Strong winds made it difficult to bring the blaze under control.
Within hours the camp was a blackened mess of twisted metal with the temporary homes charred beyond recognition.
Several cars were also destroyed.
An eyewitness said: “As the fire broke out during the day no-one was hurt as all labourers were away working. I dread to think what might have happened if this fire had broken out at night.”
The cause of the fire was still not known late yesterday.

I feel pity for these labourers and wish to help them whatever I can.
Humble request to All Qlers: Please if anyone can visit the site and donate whatever you can, New or Used Blankets/Pillows/Bedsheets/Mattress/Clothes/Shoes/Dry Food items such as rice, cereals, grains etc...
They are in bad need of donations, they have lost everything and I am sure their sponsor will not provide them with eveything they have lost except few Qatari Riyal .... last time in another incident the sponsor compensated QR. 100 only to each labour !! Do you think this amount will help them to cover their loss ???

I just spoke to one of the Manager from HBK Group of Companies and he was very pleased with our (QL members) initative and concern for their labours staff. He welcomed any kind of charity.

Its also very difficult to think that a company, who's livelyhood depends upon the work and sweat of these people, could only given each one 100 riyals each...that's pitiful....how can the sleep at night knowing what they do???

So they housed their workers in accommodation that didn't meet basic health and safety standards? is that the case... because it sounds like a shanty town.
They should be fined at least 1000QR per worker for the trauma if that is the case.
Our support is wonderful but these sponsors must be held accountable for this type of treatment.
Take me I would be happy to punch the manager!

I spoke to the man listed ...I spoke to the man listed above and he said the men are still living at the burned out camp and we can drop off donations there after 3pm. I'm going to drive by there today and make sure this is the case. Hard to believe it's still liveable after such a fire but I wonder if it really ever was liveable...

I am coordination with HBK Group manager .. once we are ready then we will invite him to the SITE not to his Office.. we will give our donations to the responsible person of HBK who knows their labours and their needs.. we will handover the items in presence of the labours !!
That is why I invited Qlers to come forward and witness the donations and handing over in a proper way.
Any more suggestions are welcome.
Also I will speak to HBK Manager to provide us with a pickup (if he can) so that we can send that pickup to those Qlers who wish to contribute but do not have transport facility.
STILL LOTS OF QLERS ARE SLEEPING ? SO SAD !!! Specially those most active ladies chasers where are you ,,, leave the ladies alone and come forward to help NEEDY PEOPLE !!

Well, don't think your post is gone unnoticed ... i am collecting as many info as possible then i will compile all the post tonight or tomorrow morning to see who said what and who need transport help.
Canarybird, sure i will contact you if i feel we are overloaded with donation ! it will be a great help.
Regarding my idea about transport (pickup) from HBK ...we will arrange transport only to collect the items from people house or offices ... PLEASE note i have not spoken the HBK about this transport this is just an idea and I will speak to them in few mins. If they agreed, i will collect details of Qlers and send the driver to their places for collection. If they don't then i will seek your help in this regards.
We need to do this on urgent basis. You can also request your friends/ relatives/ office colleagues etc.. to come forward and contribute anything they can !! PLEASE ... REMEMBER they are 600 labourer who lost their everything .. they have nothing to wear/no shoes/no towels for bath/ no mattress,pillow,blanket to sleep 600 people ? GOD Help them...
I will be visiting the site today and see how is the condition myself ! I will update you... by then I am expecting more donations PLEASE ...

Just found your post ...I saw the headline on my way out this a.m. and wondered if it would be possible to make donations. Just got home and found the thread. Good work, you guys! I just gave away a bunch of stuff, but will scrape together some more, or go out and buy. Have to work the next 2 days, but will check back here to find out what the greatest needs are and where I can drop the stuff off.

SPEED and others - my family ...SPEED and others - my family and I drove out to the fire campsite as well as the "new" campsite where the 200+ men have been moved. There are still men at the burn site but they were not affected by the fire. The "new" campsite is in the Industrial Area and it is actually nicer than the burned site. More apartment like. All the men have been given a bed, mattress and quilt by their manager. They are also given 3 meals a day.
I'm sure these men, fire or not, would be happy to have any donations but from we saw and were told, clothing is the biggest need. Underwear, socks, shoes, clothes, etc. Extras I guess would be small radios or TVs if anyone is interested in donating those. They do have electric.
I can post directions on here or PM Speed. Just let me know. I also have the phone number of the HBK Camp manager if needed.

Disgusting ...I will pass along the information about donating to the Tuesday group tomorrow, should get more help that way. I can't believe the govt. doesn't do more to regulate the housing for labourers its shameful. Only when the conditions are filmed and shown in different countries do things change. Like the camel racing with 5 year olds as the jockeys it changed when an Italian film crew taped it. Shameful. I think everyone should also put pressure on HBK engineering. But could easily burn down the whole labour area, they really need more water storage or water tankers out in that area for just such a tragedy.

As I read it correctly the most important thing these workers need is clothes as the company has rehoused them and the have a bed, blanket and 3 meals. So yes we need to collect clothes, shoes, underwear, caps, probably towels and other items like alarm clocks, tv, radios, soap, shampoo, washing power, and other daily items.I will see what we can do and will let you know.

Guys ... these people are really poor and the basic stuff that they need or eat everyday just to stay alive would go like:
1- Rice.
2- Tea.
3- Sugar.
4- Oil.
5- Evaporated Milk.
6- Tomatoes, Cucumber vegetables.
7- Bottles Of Water.
8- Eggs.
Other than food ...
1- Blankets.
2- Clothes.
3- Mattresses.
4- Shoes.
and a lot more ... you can buy whatever you want from the food part and give anything you feel like providing from the clothes part.

Dear Qlers... ...I just return from the HBK Labour camp .... the situation is really horrible ...
1) most of the wooden rooms or houses are burnt into ashes !
2) No Electricity in most of the rooms which were saved and were near the fire area.
Now you can imagine their situation in the afternoon without electricity ?
I spoke to couple of the people there, one guy told me he saved QR.5,000/- in 4 years and he was planning to go to his home but now he cannot since all his money were burned in the fire.
Another guy told me that he purchased a gold necklace for his wife and he was also due to travel to his country next week but he lost everything which he purchased including a gold set...
I cannot tell you all those heartbreaking stories people were telling me ... I could easily see HOPE shining in their eyes from us ! I asked them what they need .. they said anything specially clothes/shoes/pillows/blanket and some food items !!
I assured them that whatever we can we will do for them and one Wednesday we (Qatar Living Members) are coming to donate them.
I took some snap shots of the fire I will be uploading them in few mins.

i feel ...I feel the company should pay for all worker and stand with them and they should be covered by insurance. They put them in this poor bad accommodation and condition risking there lives,
Any way how we can be sure that our donation will go to them

If we receive any cash we will buy food and cloths as per their need. I spoke the General Manager of the Company, he has assigned his Company Manager who knows those people well and they will only distribute items among them only !

These are the few snap shots i was able to take ...you can see their living conditions and there is no electricity in other houses which were saved ! some of them has been moved to temp accommodation and few are still living in the fire gutted area under the open sky !

we can make group of needy worker like Indian ,Nepalese ++++ ...In such kind of situation when we are donating, better if we make them group of people like , Indian ,Nepalese, Bangladeshi and other, to help 600 people its not easy. just donation one thing and donation with organize is different I know couple of HBK workers mobile number , tomorrow morning first hour I am also visiting there then I can suggest some more ideas also, I will make list of needy peoples and I will organize some workers there I hope after then it will be much more easier for every one.

2. List out victim workers group wise, different nationality different group
3. Right stuffs for right people
4. Specially they need water, blanket, cloths ,biscuits, sugar, tea ,Rice, Oil, milk, Tomatoes, onion ,Garlic, salt and others vegetables
