Pickpocket prevention strategy - bachelors?
The Gulf Times mentioned increased pick pockets in shopping malls.
The article mentioned that controlling the entry of bachelors into shopping malls may get rid of "unwanted elements" in malls. They suggested malls should fix a minimum purchase for bachelors to entry.
How can this system happen? How can a store check if a bachelor bought some items? Are bachelors the problem? When I was a bachelor, I never pick-pocketed.

Then my brother in law came from off shore for the day for his dental appointment. He need to buy something that quite important for him ... he arrived in The City Centre but he cant get in. So he have to ring me and my husband to come to the city centre to walk him into the mall ... Once you are in , the security wont bother you.
Rediculous !!!
Like you Bae ... my brother in law did not pick pocket either.

As I understand "bachelor" ...As I understand "bachelor" in the Gulf English dialaect, it doesn't mean only an unmarried man. Unfortunately, I understand it to refer specifically to South Asian, transient, poorly paid male labourers without their families. We know for sure that the article isn't referring to unmarried 55 year old male invesment bankers.

we knew when they say what a bachelor mean in this country., they're referring "bachelors".... literally to such specific group.

Bachelor discrimination - stuffing a sock in it ...Check it out at http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topics/article.asp?cu_no=2&item_no=216416&version=1&template_id=36&parent_id=16
A housewife suggested making bachelors buy something or keeping them out (on family days like Novi's brother-in-law experienced).
Gumby, your comments "bachelors = underpaid, poor South Asian workers" explains the article well. When I go into Landmark by myself on a designated "Family Day", the security guards don't stop me. But they did stop some "bachelors" (Gulf dialect). This is racism and shouldn't happen. But what can you do? Just treat everybody well.
I stuff a sock into my pocket to protect my wallet and I hold onto dw (darling wife) purse to prevent theft. I was mugged in Toronto so I'm quite safety-aware.

kicked out of park ...My husband and 2 young sons were kicked out of the park right down from landmark right after it opened. The reason given then was "family day" Since they had no mother with them (I was enjoying some peace and quiet) they were not considered a "real family". My peace and quiet did not last as long as I wanted on that day.

So, what if your husband is Asian or not? Still doesn't justify your rants on the topic chosen for the thread!!
This is my stand, we are all here for work and to rant about Qatar not our fellow expatriates.
So, Alexa please think before you write. There are a lot of Asians out here.

Between a rock and a hard place ...The heart of this issue: respect & profiling. The malls are in a difficult situation: stuck between two hard rocks. They don't want to offend people by profiling some members of society as higher risk of being pick-pockets but they want to keep the bad elements out. All people want respect but the mall security has profilled that a "bachelor" (using Gumby's defn) is the most likely to pick-pocket. What do they do?

JaneyJaney, I think what ...Alexa was meaning was that they don't only stop Asian from going in, its bachelors from any nationality....
She didn't mean it in the way you took it.
DohaSteve said
I agree with the ban ..... ...Everybody that enters a mall, be they male or female, should be made to produce their marriage certificate.
Once that has been checked and verified and stamped by three different people (none of whom can read the language that said marriage certificate is written in), they should be made to open up jackets, coats, abayas, dish-dash, and turn out the pockets of jeans or trousers to prove that they don't have extra deep pickpocket pockets.
Furthermore, anybody with a naff haircut, a squint eye, low forehead, trashy earrings, scuffed shoes, one shoulder higher than the other, moaning children, teenagers, or wearing colours which clash, should not only be forbidden from entering, they should be banned for a period commensurate with their offence, which will be tabulated and put up on every entrance door (e.g. slightly scuffed shoes = 1 week ban, a bad squint = 3 months ban, etc).

And yes, I also think it is entirely ridiculous to deny entry to bachelors no matter what nationality they are.Plus to imply they do not have honorable purposes to their visits...not right at all!

all were not with family off course. We just asked for the reason for stopping us to enter ,He replied in Arabic , could't get ..Bse we dont understand arabic. On showing our Company ID card he allowed to go inside. If this is a “bachelor issue" , just wondering on what basis " they make decisions"

Pickpockets cash in at crowded shopping malls ...Pickpockets cash in at crowded shopping malls
By Ramesh Mathew
Mr. Ramesh Mathew,
The best prevention for the situation of **pickpocket** is "Indivual awareness and prevention". Don't impose economic limitations of purchase or profiling of races. There is many ways to control this problem besides just placing dictatorial rulings.
If your confession is a guilty verdict, just push the door in the way out, You will be ejected all the way to hell. If you are innocent of your confession, then a white carpet for your path will be roll out and you will be levitated to heaven exclusively.

Solution ...Why don't the shopping malls just have more security guards in place and allow everyone the right to shop? In the past they didn't allow single guys into Landmark on certain days as most young men were just walking around cruising bugging the ladies but how do you know if they want to cause trouble or shop? And it was Arabs they were targetting not Asians.
mr_rob said
Let's get another ...Let's get another government agency formed, and we'll all have to apply for a special Shopping Permit, where you have to scan it in before they let you through the doors.
Of course, applicants would need to meet certain conditions of: no facial deformities / excessive ugliness, a minimum income amount, minimal body odour, etc.

Surveillance system ...I wonder why they keep so many security gaurds at shopping malls and plus they have cameras also in shopping malls every where and still we have this problem. I remember only once they stopped me at the City Center gate that was b4 two years me and my friend we are movie freaks never missed any but that day they stopped us from entering but luckily one of the shop owner in city center was a friend of mine and i called him he took us in.Hardly in qatar there is only one place C.C where bachelors can go either for shopping, for coffee, for movie or for eating. I have seen alot of bachelors asking families if they can enter with them on family days.
