Israel marks its 60th anniversary

Israel marks its 60th anniversary

Celebrations have taken place across Israel to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state.

Fireworks, concerts and an aerial display were among the events laid
on, while Israeli families enjoyed picnics and barbecues for the
national holiday.

Israel declared itself an independent state on 14 May
1948, three years after the end of World War II, and the death of six
million Jews in the Holocaust.

But Palestinians know the foundation day as al-Nakba, or "the Catastrophe".

They held solemn marches in the West Bank, meant to symbolise the hope
of Palestinian refugees to return to villages in what is now Israel.

It is peace, not war, that we aspire to and crave

Ehud Olmert, Israeli PM

At one march, attended by thousands of Arab Israelis from northern
Israel, hundreds of protesters clashed with police, and several people
were injured, police said.

Israeli celebrations meanwhile drew large crowds to
military air shows, while military bases opened their doors to the
public to show off some of their arsenal.

Uncertain future

The BBC's Tim Franks in Jerusalem says Israel has changed dramatically
since it was founded, with a population nearly 10 times larger, and a
stronger economy and military than its founders could have dreamt of.

However he says it is also a place riven by uncertainty
- over its unresolved conflicts with neighbouring Arab countries and
the Palestinians, and over the question of whether its own religious,
political and ethnic mosaic still fits together.

Israelis were entertained by parachute jumps

The state of Israel was proclaimed about six months after the United
Nations General Assembly voted to partition what was then Palestine
into Jewish and Arab states.

In the war that followed, some 700,000 Palestinians fled or were driven out of their homes.

The anniversary is calculated according to the Jewish lunar calendar.

Palestinians are due to mark the occasion, al-Nakba, on 15 May.

Hopes for peace

The 60 years of Israel's existence have been marked by conflict, both
with its Arab neighbours, and with Palestinians living under
occupation.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Present day conflict is a continuation of a 60 year old controversy

Asif, Pakistan

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke of his hopes for future
peace, in a speech marking Remembrance Day, when Israelis honour
soldiers killed since the state was founded.

"Our conflict has been long indeed," he said.

"However, it is peace, not war that we aspire to and crave."

Israel's existence as a nation, he said, depended on its "willingness
and ability" to defend itself, but there was also a "willingness to
compromise".

Mr Olmert's political future is being called into
question, since he became the centre of a police inquiry. The Israeli
courts have imposed a gagging order on reporting the details of the
inquiry.

US President George W Bush is due to attend a conference marking the anniversary in Jerusalem next week.

The US president is pushing for a Middle East peace settlement before
he leaves office in January, but there has been little visible progress
in talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

I would like to salute the Palestinean resistance & struggle against the Zionist terrorism & occupation of Palestine. A salute to every honest Palestinean who refuses to recognize any signed "peace" treaty as we all no there will NEVER be any peace coming from the Zionists, and the only solution for this occupation is to send those Zionist back to the countries they immigrated from (since the early years of the 20th century)
A lot of honest people from around the world, have full respect & appreciation to the brave way those heroic Palestineans are refusing to give up their rights, refusing to forget their tragedies caused by the Zionists, and to the way they are leading the struggle against that terrorist regime called "Israel".

. said as expected on such occasions ...

another U.S president has just praised the terrorists & killers (Israel) and condemned the heroic legitimate resistance organizations of the real owners of the land (Hamas & Hizbullah).
This is a very clear case of hypocracy & political prostitution, and this is why such stupid & hateful mentality of such terrorist presidents will always bring destruction & insecurity to their people & countries no matter how many Vietnams, Somalias, Afghanistans or Iraqs they are able to invade.

Well perhaps the Hezbollah wouldn't be getting killed if they weren't trying to take over Beirut and kill innocent Lebanese. Just a thought. And this thread is about Israel's 60th anniversary, not about why Americans don't feel safe in their own country.

However, talking about this topic i would like to mention the fact that it is very ASTONISHING what happened yesterday and i wish it was more underlined by the press.

the relationship between israel and the USA has been for many years denied, or covered for many political, economical and geostrategical reasons.
What really astonished me yesterday night is the fact that not only politicians were there but ALSO well known hollyood actors and singers (barbara stresand was there,...) and it gets worse CEO of big international companies.

So what does that say, the best way to make an illegitimate relationship become a legitimate one is to let the world knows it careless of what some others could feel about it.

as mentionned by TOCQUEVILLE and many others big philosophs.

the first step to democracy is when there is a clear separation between the state and the religion. Yesterday night nobody mentionned ISRAEL but rather the JEWISH state. Not Israeli protagonists were present but JEWISH ceo's, comedians, and singers.

Therefore, i would strongly advise Mr. Bush not to give any speech concerning implementing Democracy in Irak or in any part of the world. It couldn't get any ironical and even Funny than Mr Bush's speech yesterday night:)

To another extent, i wish my deepest sympathy to my lebanese brothers. May God protect this beautiful country that i heard sooo much about from my grand father, french citizen who fell in love with this country (before the 1970's)

I dont' think I'm the one who needs to be clever .said, you're the one who can't seem to see the problem of a non-governmental "organization" trying to overthrow a legitimate government that was elected by the people. If that's not terrorism I don't know what is. Really Hezbollah should get their mission straight, is it Jews they want to kill or Muslims?

Picasso, I've never really found that the US has ever denied ties to Israel, in fact they always seem to have been pretty blunt about it, the 60th anniversary not being an acception.

Osman Yissah said Whenever the USA is ...

Whenever the USA is involved, there is always more layers
of deception. what we see and hear in the general mainstream media is like half a layer.
The U.S could end these conflicts like that, with help from allies i suppose.
Why dont they?
top 10 countries need it to sell weapons, no one wonders hows who taught israel to build UZIs and gives them M16 or why they just never run out bullets?

If the Usa barricade and sanction all conflicted countries till arms numbers fell so low that sticks would be the replacement

Then again considering the facts, does anyone wonder why palastine, lebanon have not just bent to the will of a mightier force of israel?

look through enough cracks and layers, and you will see the arms dealers working for the u.s.a and supplying the insurgents.

Israel wasnt a result of the guilt for the haulocaust, but more like the largest joint business venture the world has ever known.

we can sit here and discuss who's land it is etc. but its all irrelevant, because thats not why the conflicts continue.

Ask a pious Jew if Israel, should be considered a state, he will say NO. it is written in the TORA what was needed to be done for israel to peacefully exist. And has it been done NOPE.

Dont forget JEWs are placed in economically strategic positions in the USA.

But also countries that supply the usa with ores and such and oils, Muslim countries mainly, would be more allied with palastine and israel.

Also the U.s being a christian state, seem to persecute and look down on Jews it has become a norm, considering it is said the jews happily disposed of their saviour.
The muslims who DONT even believe JESUS ACTUALLY DIED SHOULD RATHER come to the aide of the "seemlesy wrongly accused jews" ... not the case

So we can be certain israel was not made for religious purposes either.

Really its the same old stuff that happened a thousand years ago when everyone went on a crusade to the holy land and every thought knights templar were protectors of pilgrims, when they were really after treasure.

In the present same old story but more layers of Bull.
these layers prevent any one country from actually just saying , "hey we will carpet bomb both of you if you don't resolve this"

Talking about deaths and whose land it is like treating cancer with a strong pain killer.
Talking about the underlying layers of beneficiaries to the conflicts, and trying to uncover the layers of bull, and unlikely 2 way allegiances, is like trying to remove the whole tumour for good.

The State of Israel and its people are here to stay on this earth permanently. Regardless of the negative opinion of some nations or group of people that oppose that idea.

As long there are nations or groups willing to destroy them, they will defend themselves at any cost.

My opinion is that each individual needs to embrace peace and support the already established signed peace treaties and governments from previous elections.

There is no need to support the political interest of other hostile nations that are always interfering with the peace process with ignorant political ideologies of aggression. In war everyone suffers.

hizbulla and its gangs did not find any military targets in Beirut so they decided that a funeral to burry one of its victims would be a threat. they shot at the funeral and killed 6 innocent people. this took place some 3 days ago.
the numerous number of hizbulla militants killed is due to a simple fact that the attacker encounters much more casualties than the defender.

>>>Have you been to this region and seen how the Palestinians suffer on a day to day basis?

Have you seen the wall - how haunting it is and seen how Israel has destroyed the people of this region???

Have you seen how the Israelis intimidate the Palestinians on the street with their machine guns while the Palestinians have no other option but to step aside on the side walk like swine?

Have you seen the Palestinian refugee camps where they cannot return to their original homeland?

Have you been to Gaza where children are actually starving to death?

Or try the emergency ward in Gaza – its pleasant in there. No the Israelis don’t target civilians - are you that daft?

How would you feel if you were kicked out of your home and your land taken from you?

It’s so easy to criticise suicide bombers when you don’t even understand the reality of what it means to have everything taken away from you...it’s called desperation..unless you have experienced it you have no right to question it.

Go visit Gaza, the West Bank, Jerusalem before posting posts like this.

This is why some "terrorists" should be proud of themselves if they were called so, by the USA :-)
