Shipping upright piano to Doha?

Hi
I am so glad I finally managed to log in to the forum successfully! Have forgotten my password, and finally got the reset password mail in the Spam box!
Need all your expert opinion. Should I ship the my piano to Doha, or is an upright piano easily available there? My family will only be there for around 2 years - a second hand piece will serve us well. Any idea if there are such available? If so, how much does it cost? Also does anyone have any idea how much it will cost to ship a piano (we are from Singapore)? Or is that an incredulously crazy idea?
Also I have read that there are long wait list for schools. Is the situation the same for piano classes for children? Mine are 7 and 11 years old.
Thanks!

angiechia ...The thing about shipping a piano here would be having it re-tuned at this end and how it will be handled at this end would be a main concern, (customs here have no regard for special handling of personal items no matter how expensive they are). As far as lessons I am unsure and it would depend on the method your child is already learning.

hi malinis am so glad to ...hi malinis
am so glad to hear from you! I thought this thread is lost forever! And wow ... RM16000 is alot of $$ ... to transport there and then another that figure to transport back when we return!
really hope that someone who is already at Doha can help point us in the direction of some second hand piano dealers .. or anyone who can rent.
otherwise how do all of you who have a piano get yours? how much does a new one cost over there?

Hi , I am a director of ...Hi , I am a director of music at a school in doha and can email some information regarding private piano teachers (depending on level and what you want). As for sending your piano, I would strongly advise against it! due to huge cost and customs. There is only a couple of piano tuners here and much of the equipment I order gets damaged in customs.
You can get a really good yamaha touch sensitive pianos here for between 7 and 12 thousand riyal (with amazing features, intenet, recording etc). You can get a brand new yamaha upright for 12 - 15,000 riyal and there is always second hand options, esp if you are willing to hunt around. There are also more simple touch sensitive options for around 4-5 thousand riyal.
Anyway if you want some info about piano teachers chuck me an email. and welcome to Doha! we love fellow musicians.

Graeme ... May i ask do you ...Graeme ...
May i ask do you know is there any music class in Doha which is not private? (music class a group of students with 1 teacher). So far i only can find one to one tuition which is i find it less attractive for younger children (especially for my son who have very short attention span).
I know back in Asia Yamaha have music school across the region. I wonder wether they have the same here?

Modern home is the dealer of ...Modern home is the dealer of Yamaha musical instruments I bought a digital piano two month ago and I'm very satisfied with it so far, especially that I searched around a lot and fount that this is the best deal.
They have upright pianos as well, starting from QAR11,000. but tuning is a bit costly as it costs around QAR750 (you have to do it every 6 months or everytime you move it). re-selling the used piano is possible as the salesman told me. here is the Modern home umber:4422815. their website is not working which weird www.modernhome.com.q...

Angie, the amount I quoted ...Angie, the amount I quoted was for the shipment of all our belongings - not the piano alone. It is for a 20 foot container. We are expatriates here in Malaysia and leaving for good for Doha. So, we are taking all our things - Piano included.
Graeme , is there a duty to be paid when bringing in a piano in a transfer of residence? My movers assured me that no duty needs to be paid. Would greatly appreciate your response.
Also, what is the cost of piano lessons in Doha?
Thanks
Malini

Hi Graeme and Gus ...Hi Graeme ...
may I know how much are fees for piano classes? My girls are in grades 1 and 3. Are classes conducted in the student's home or in the music schools?
Do touch sensitive pianos mean the same as digital pianos? If so I am quite hesitant because I have heard many friends' experience that it is very difficult for the children to transit back to the normal piano when they become too used to the digital - basically because the touch is different. How true is this?
If you know of anyone keen to let go of their second hand, can you keep me posted? Thanks!
Gus ...
Where is modern home located? I will be making a trip to doha in June, and would like to make a visit. Is there any other schools/music stores that I should take a look at besides modern? I would like to make the best of the trip before we make the final move.
Besides looking for a piano, we are also sourcing for chidlren classes in
*piano,
*gym (does Mrs Innes of DESS have an email?),
*ballet, tap and modern dances (I have made contact with Paula, but is there anywhere else we should look?),
*art/painting
thanks so much! I am getting more and more excited by the day!

We brought our piano ...with us. It is an upright Yamaha. Our company paid shipping so don't know anything about that. No extra duty fee. I have seen ads for second hand pianos here, so they are available. Tuners are almost non existent. I called one and he wanted 1000QR. No way! Also, the moving trucks here do not have hydraulic lifts so everything is man handled off the trucks. I could not watch as 10 guys struggled for 45 minutes to get my piano off the truck. I was shocked when they actually managed to do it without crushing someone or having the piano end up in splinters.
My older kids started on a digital piano. My oldest played on it for 10 years before switching to the upright. She plays beautifully and there were no transition problems.

Hi Gus and DeeDee ...Gus ...
thanks for your very useful info. I will look out for the CLP230 when I visit Doha next month. Hope the price had not inflated too much. Ha ha...
DeeDee ...
wow, your experience with the piano mover sounds like a nightmare, and tuner for QR1000 - that's just amazing! I think that leaves us with no choice then ... and thanks for the reassurance too!
