Contacting a friend who's going to Indonesia?
Hope you can help! I have an Indonesian friend who is going back to Indonesia pretty soon. I want to contact him when he is in Indonesia. But he has no phone number so I can't call him. He said that he would call me when he gets in Indonesia. But I am moving out of Qatar to another country so I don't know my new phone number.
How can I keep in touch with my friend? Any ideas?

Is this a trick question ...Is this a trick question Bae? Possible solutions seem so obvious. If he doesn't have internet access get his mailing address from him. Then when you have a phone number you can write to him, which will also give him your new mailing address. He can then call you on your new telephone number.

I have a planned vacation this end of June to Indonesia, maybe I can solve your problem. Just send me a pm, and I'll do my best to forward your message to him (her?) soon after I arrive in Indonesia.

Logistics ...DG, no joke. I am seriously exploring way to stay in touch with my Indonesian "friend". I need to contact my friend again in September or October.
Novita's idea my fly so I'll get my friend a card. So, are you guys saying that even the poorest person in Indonesia has their own home phone? If so, I'll have to ask my friend again to provide a number. If my friend provides no number, deos my friend want to end the "friendship"?
The thing is...my friend can't read or write (Bahasa or English). So mailing may be difficult and email may be difficult. Does the digital divide exist in Indonesia?

Tightening the screws ...It seems that most people have their own home phone or mobile phone so things are sounding suspcious. It seems that my "friend" doesn't want me to make contact in Indonesia. Armed with this info, I'll be more persistent in getting a phone number out of my friend (or mailing address).
What about the poorer people from poor areas of Indonesia? Do they all have home phones?

Mobile phones ...Would a mobile phone purchased here in Doha work in Indonesia? Can a SIM card be purchased easily in Indonesia? The answer to my problem may be to give "my friend" a mobile phone.
Do many people in Indonesia have mobile phones? I've read that there are only 25 million landlines there with a population of 250 million. The reason is: long waiting list, costs 1 million rupah to install a phone, the rates are too expensive, and the new installer may have to pay the bills for the previous owner b/c all landline numebrs are assigned to one house only.

I have the answers from your questions listed below:
1. Would a mobile phone purchased here in Doha work in Indonesia? Can a SIM card be purchased easily in Indonesia? The answer to my problem may be to give "my friend" a mobile phone.
2. Do many people in Indonesia have mobile phones? I've read that there are only 25 million landlines there with a population of 250 million. Answer:
1. Mobile phone bought in Qatar will also be available to be used in Indonesia as long as there a network range from 800/900/1800 for GSM Mobile Phone. Just like Novita said, buying SIM Card in Indonesia is as easy as 1-2-3. They don't need your passport copy or even an ID. The problem is, many Indonesians are fond of changing their mobile phone number so it will be more difficult for you to contact him.
2.Wow, you must have done a long research for this. LOL

Mobile in Indonesia! ...Well, humblehim, it looks like simply asking "my friend" to get a SIM card in Indonesia is the best and easiest idea.
As I'm leaving Qatar, I have a trillion other things to attend to (one of them not worrying about getting a SIM card here that works in Indonesia.
