10 million baby girls killed

diamond's picture

In India over the last twenty years it is estimated that 10 million baby fetuses or girls were killed by their parents.   The Indian government has now launched a plan aimed at giving life and hope to these girls and offering their parents an alternative.

The Indian government plans to set up a series of orphanages to raise unwanted baby girls in a bid to halt the widespread practice of aborting female fetuses, according to a senior government official.

Dubbed the "cradle scheme," the plan is an attempt to slow the practice that international groups say has killed more than 10 million female fetuses in the last two decades, leading to an alarming imbalance in the ratio between males and females in India, Renuka Chowdhury, the minister of state for women and child development, told the Press Trust of India news agency in an interview published Sunday.

"What we are saying to the people is have your children, don't kill them. And if you don't want a girl child, leave her to us," Chowdhury told the agency, adding that the government planned to set up a center in each regional district.

"We will bring up the children. But don't kill them because there really is a crisis situation," she said.

On Sunday, police arrested a gynecologist and janitor at a hospital near the central Indian city of Bhopal after the discovery of nearly 400 bones from fetuses and newborns in a pit behind the hospital. It is believed they are the remains of unwanted baby girls.

Many districts in the country of more than 1 billion people routinely report only 800 girls born for every 1,000 boys. According to the latest census figures in India, the number of girls per 1,000 boys declined from 945 to 927 between 1991 and 2001.

I really hope this new scheme works.  Over the years India has tried various different ways of stopping this female infanticide such as banning parents from finding out the sex of their child.  Nothing has proved to have much success. The importance of having a male child as a future provider is still seen as essential in a country with widespread poverty.

More than a quarter of the population live below the poverty threshold which is a pitiful $00.40 per day.

75% of the poor are rural subsistence dwellers with little of no chance for financial improvement.

If ever people were crying out for microcredit, it is these. Wealth distribution is laughable.

The poor one's go for more boys in hope that the boy may earn for family and the family may come out of the poverty in future. ;may be a good logic according to them to overcome poverty. What amuses me most is the creamy layer's longing for boy. For rich one's it is the issue of the property inheritance. If it’s a matter of property, then legally male dominates the society.
Secondly, the boy is the one who carries the family name. So there is a stupid yet strong cultural preference for sons, who will carry the family name, inherit ancestral property, care for parents in old age and light their fathers' funeral pyres.
DG, my Father stood firm behind my Mother to take this rather strong decision. Don't know if it is ok to say it here on an open forum, but he was the one who had taken the decision of Vasectomy in order to control future births in family. Believe me, the male, undergoing vasectomy is still a very uncommon in India or elsewhere.

So, most of the girls also think that they must have a brother. And the custom continues....

Moreover, when choosing a girl for their beloved son, some people tend not to choose her from 'all daughters family' in a belief that the girl from such family would be able to produce more and more girls and may not give them a much desired 'Name bearer'. Woman with all daughters is a thing to pity. That's why when I gave birth to my baby and when my Mother found out that it's a boy...her first words were,"Thank God, now you don't have to go thru all the ordeal.." , despite the fact that my family is really a nice one, she just couldn't help saying this.
So, just imagine how deeply the urge for boy is rooted in the society. Bearing a boy is just like getting a 'clean cheat' from the society....LOL

DohaSteve said Smelly, I can insult any nationality ...

..... given half a chance and the merest hint of encouragement. If you tell us your true nationality, I promise to hurl insults and dig up obscure facts to bolster an otherwise weak and senseless point of view. That should suit you just fine.

Oh, Smelly, sorry for not including all the other faults of all the other countries in the world. That was so remiss of me.

If, as you say, this topic is an affront on Indian National Pride, perhaps you could help to do something about it.

Luckily, I don't take you seriously at all. I knnow tongue-in-cheek when I see it ;)

Someonenew, DohaSteve: I was merely pointing out that this discussion hadn’t descended into a mush of denial and tangential counter arguments as it sometimes does on QL.
Shreeya: I’m as Indian (Malayali) as my mom’s Puttu and Kadala.
Note to self: My username does seem to upset a lot of people; perhaps I should change it…

I think you were doing a bit more than that. You were personally chastising me for creating the thread, albeit with attempted humour. A lot of people won't 'get' your sense of humour BTW.

Tigasin321 said Smelly rocks ...

He is the most erudite and talented contributor on QL. I don't know or care what nationality he is but I do hope that he is a journalist because he writes beautifully and illustrates his points with humor and pathos.

I want to read more from the Smelly man.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

shreeya said Well, Smelly, I think ...

Well, Smelly,
I think sometimes back in some thread somebody is saying that you are not an Indian because of your rather witty sarcastic (British?)way of writing. So I said so. Well, I am more than happy to hear it from horse's mouth that you indeed are...
We are having such serious issues and no point in denying it.....(Dare talk about our Patented Driving Style and I won't let you go unscratched!!!...lol..)
