Bad experience at Hamad Hospital

I've a something to share with all of you. A very sad and bad experience of my friend with Hamad Hospital. Pregnant ladies please read this and decide if you need to go to Hamad Hospital.

This friend of mine was 6 months pregnant and since she had blood spotting she went to a private clinic here and they asked her to immediately to go to Hamad hospital for further check up. This was on 30 April 2008 (Wednesday night). At Hamad Hospital she were told that usually for pregnant ladies the cervix supposed to be 3 – 4 cm thick but her’s is only 1.75cm they found this on Thursday before lunch. The doctor said that this can be treated through cervical cerclage (treatment to prevent preterm delivery). However they admitted her and asked her to wait until Sunday for another Ultrasound and they will set a group by Tuesday for this cervical cerclage treatment. They told her that the couldn’t give treatment immediately as Friday and Saturday is holiday for them. So there won’t be doctor’s available.

They only gave her pain reliever from Wednesday to Saturday, not other medication given. On Saturday night she had severe pain and she complaint about the pain to the nurses because there is no doctor there. The nurses again give her pain reliever and ask her to wait. But sadly the pain never stop after few hours her water bag break and she started bleeding but no one attend to her only her husband and friends was beside her. After her water bag break she went to wash room….and the baby actually came out and was still alive. Then they called the nurse and the nurse bring wheel chair and brought her back to her room to clean her. When they cut the umbilical cord the baby died .

Then the doctor came just to check her (mild check up) and gave her some medicine. On Sunday morning another doctor came and did another mild check up and told her that she can go home on Sunday itself. There is no ultrasound done on her. Now she was asked to come after one month for a normal check up……

I don’t know what is happening here is Qatar. Why there is no doctor attend to her? Why if there is a holiday no doctor’s attend to emergency cases. I seriously think if the give her proper treatment the could have safe the baby. This possible as I have a friend who actually gave birth through C-section and the hospital kept baby in intensive care for one month and now he his 6 yrs old. What is your opinion on this, what would you advise her…??

very sad.....and who says doctors know best....it should have been obvious she was in labour any trained person would know that and she should have been monitored continuously until delivery....this is pure negligence pure and simple....any other country one could sue for this..not sure about that here.....

A wife of my friend had similar experiences at Hamad, it was about 5 years ago. Its unfortunate that no one is held responsible in such cases.

Pure negligence of staff. lack of professionalism. Last thing would happen to any mother. One of my friend also had very bad experience with hamad hospital then she went to her home country. Am wondering when they will change…

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.

I went there when i came to this country and was 7 months pregnant, the fact that once they know you dont speak there language they treat you like s**t......thank God i didn't tolerate it and went to private hospital.

I wonder what would happen if it was a Qatari woman on that situation??????????????

Gypsy said I've never heard of anyone ...

I've never heard of anyone having a good experience in Hamad that isn't Qatari. It's a third world hospital of the highest order, if you want to actually get better and get properly diagnosed go to Al Ahli or any of the private hospitals.

najd_san said this is gross negligence ...

personally i feel onemust never chance a first delivery here. its too risky. and u dont know what to expect either. hope ur friends ok. pls ask her to get a full checkup outside if she can afford it.

Eve said No accountability ...

Unfortunately since you can't sue for bad care Hamad does anything they want. I have a relative that had twins and because of the bad care one child died and the other is deaf, blind, can't speak, etc. The country should be ashamed we have prestigious universities and the healthcare is third world or worse. It was in the paper this week a lady went into Hamad in labor they sent her off and she had the baby on the floor of the office of a private dr. These drs. and nurses need to be fired, I hate to say it but if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

That is so lame..You know a friend of mine gave birth at Hamad hospital, she went on C-section. When they cut her open the stupid doctor cut too deep that hit the baby's chest..
FYI the baby is fine she just had her 1st birthday last Friday.

Another case at Hamad hospital, my baby sitter gave birth on normal delivery. The doctor cut the you know what V_G_N_ ...The scissor hit the head of her baby..Till now you would see the mark on her head.
FYI shes now 7 years old.

Luckily when it was my turn to give birth on C-Section (breech) it went well. Nice doctors and nurses..
Now my daughter will turn 3 yrs old now.

NB said Really feel sorry for your friend!!!!!!!!!!! ...

If possible ask them to contact Hamad's Management/HOD as they are 100% responsible for this. This is pure negligence. Good that you shared this piece of information. We would be very careful in our cases. Only in this part of the world, doctors celebrate weekend so happily. Have never heard or seen anywhere else, that in hospaitals such huge as Hamad, doctors are unavailable during emergency. Very serious action should have been taken by your friend's family on this issue.

i disagree with gypsy s drivel about private hospitals giving top notch care...thats a laugh.and exemplifies the adage that "ignorance is bliss".
i whole heartedly agree with kellie sttement about opening up the private sector in qatar. i for one believe it is too highly controlled ahd regulated to be of any real practical value.
although i have absolutely no connection with what happened to your friend, i do feel sorry for what happened to her.i suggest you move through the proper channels to get redressed.feel free to pm me if you need help in this matter.

do it right - the first time!

this incident should not happen again. this is something avoidable when there is proper care and training. Hamad women's hospital please wake up. the expatriates are getting scared here. not all can afford private hospitals. yes we can file cases but there should be an action. is there any law that protects medical malpractice? whom shall we trust in this matter?

I have to agree with coolquietman. In my experience, private hospitals are not necessarily better here in Qatar.
It all comes down to luck, finding a doctor who actually knows what he/she is doing and having proper ethics.

Totally agree with coolquietman, the private hospitals the ive experienced are a joke, especially the Dr's who dont seem to know what they are talking about.
The childrens emergency centre has been the best so far for my kids..
Alexa is spot on too, if you find a doctor who knows what they are doing, then you are lucky.
Personally, planning for another child has gone out the window as long as we are living in Q, as i dont even trust taking my kids to the Dr for the most basic things, let alone them handling a pregnancy.
