Latest news from Qatar
Muslim Expat from UK
Assalamu Alaikum,
I would like to hear from any Muslim Expat from the Uk who is now working in Qatar. I have a few questions:
What is the Islamic way of life in Qatar considering that a Muslim should lead his or her life according to the Sharia?
How easy has it been to adjust from UK way of life to the one in Qatar?
How easy has it been to mingle and get to know other Muslim expatriates and local Qatari's?
My background is that I am now in a position to either accept or reject an offer from a Gas company in Qatar and I just wanted to know if someone else has already made the daunting step into Qatar from the UK.

Fellow Muslim Expat ...I have been in Qatar for around 7 months, I only graduated out of University last year and so found it quite hard adjusting, however I would recommend you do take the offer if its right for you and your family. You will adjust and find that its fairly easy to live by a Sharia law, as obviously all the food is halal, friday is a universal day off, and there are little things that you just notice by living here like you hear the Azzan everywhere, and you can pop into a mosque as theres one almost on every corner! Also during Ramadam, most companies give shorter hours, and when its Iftar time, say your stuck in trafic their are people who hand out dates and water, like I said little things.
However the hardest thing is finding fellow western Muslims, I have found a few but very little and was planning on starting a society/organization to try to find others..but its in the planning stage!
Aneway feel free to contact me, and I will try to help you.

Please count us in!! ...Assalamu Alaikum Brother,
We're just in the process of moving to Qatar from Houston, and my husband and I would really like to be a part of such an organization!!! (Hopefully there will a sisters wing too). One of the things I will really miss coming from the US, would probably be the most amazing ramadan gatherings at the local masjid w/aftar and taraveeh prayers...my son's favourite. I guess this doesnt happen in Qatar?

We have taraweeh for women in most of the mosques here in Qatar. You can also go there for iftar but usually people iftar their fast at home then go to masjid for maghrib prayer. Some stay there till taraweeh others come back home and go again for Taraweeh as masjids are everywhere, at walking distances. Qiyam al-layil is another wonderful experience. You will find atmosphere during ramadan totally changed and very enjoyable.
Welcome to Qatar. I moved here 7 months back. I came from UAE, so the ramadan is more or less the same here.

Well we can start one ...If we get enough responses from people at Qatar living, then through here we could make some sort of organization. I went to a talk by Hamza Yusaf here in January, and there were performances by Sami Yusaf, so Masallah Qatar can attract relatively famous people.
There are Ramaden tents at the hotels, where people can dine in the evenings during Ramadam, however their are also supposed local ones in suburban areas, yet I haven't seen them myself, and I havent met very many locals to invite me to the tents, however alot depends on who you know and where you live.
One of the biggest difference you'll find is in western countries, the muslim community will be fairly strong knit, and very socialable with one another, and people will spend time at the local masjid, get to know each other and look out for each other, for numerous reasons it doesnt happen here. Firstly the majority here is muslim, so there are no tendencies to relay on one another, and secondly the fact their are so many mosques around means people dont have the time to build ties like they do in the UK or US or wherever your from..

Salaam All ...As Salamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,
I just arrived a few weeks back and Insha’Allah my wife should be here in another month. We’re both from the US (lived in Florida and Atlanta). What I miss the most is that bond with other Western Muslims – on all levels too – Deen, cultural etc. It’s making me quite homesick and I’d love to get in contact with other western Muslims. I’m also hoping once my wife comes she will be able to make some friends.
I agree with you Asif, Qatar can definitely attract some good scholars – by the way, Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips is currently in Doha.

qd06 ...salam,
We're from the Sugarland area and go to Masjid as-Sabireen off of Dulles and highway 90, sounds familiar??
Where did you guys live???
Yeah, Inshallah, we'll adjust to the routines there, however, for Ramadan, what I'm really really looking forward to perhaps a week long stay in Makkah/Madinah....nothing can beat that!! Does anyone do that??
Another question for western-muslim families:
For those who were sending there children to Islamic schools in the UK/US....what schools would you recommend in Qatar??? So far, on QL I've heard all the praises for ASD (American school) and DESS (British School) for their curriculum and activities, but I dont think they'll be providing any Islamic education. Any schools that excel in both???
Excited to hear about MEOQ!

desertmoon - yes Bilal Philips has an Islamic BA degree program that just started at the QGC- the link is at the bottom of the e-mail. Of course anyone can take whatever classes they want and they have sisters there. The course is meant for english speaking students but arabic is taught as a language. We have about 4 bros from the UK.
Ash - From what I am told Meccah and Madinah are reaaallly crowded in Ramadan, especially the last 10 nights. It will probably be very vibrant. By the way, we had a nice number of muslims from Houston who moved to Atlanta.
My wife will be here at the end of May insha'Allah and I know she will be looking to meet some friends too.

muslim expatriates ...As'salaams All,
I've been in doha for about 10 months now (moved from South Africa) with my wife and we are enjoying it quite a bit.
The Hamza Yusuf event was awesome- I took some videos of Sami Yusufs performance which can be seen here: http://riy.vox.com/l...
We were lucky enough to know a few other muslim couples who were in doha before we moved out- which made our life SO much easier!
We'd both be glad to help you out with any information you need in settling in- just drop me a note and we can be in touch.
It would also be a cool idea for all of us to get together once you all arrive- we could meet up on the corniche or something with our families. Let me know what you think about it.
Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Sorry for my Absence ...Salam,
Sorry for disappearing had a busy few days. Well the name MEOQ is a great name, not as catchy as it could be, but still a great name.
I live in Al-Saad area, near the sports round-about, does anyone else live around there?
The way I found out about the Islamic event, with Hamza Yousaf and co, was by listening to the radio, QBS and a stand in the Landmark Mall, if I wasnt listening to the radio or went to Landmark, then I would never have known, and it highlights the problems that exist in Qatar, there were plenty of people there yet it was almost all word of mouth from what I could tell.
I am a single guy here in Qatar, and thats another problem, for single brothers or sisters, its EXTRA hard to meet fellow expat muslims, and this was confirmed at the Islamic event, when people told me, until im married it would be near impossible to be involved in any event.
I find that a great shame however hopefully with the start of MEOQ we can solve these problems.

From what I gather.. ...From what I gather.. through very close friends
Is that education should be kept in the british/american curric. schools if you are serious about education for the kids
the influence of being in a muslim country and making muslim friends as well as the access to arabic and Islamic studies will help the children grow up with both an educated mind as well as an Islamic outlook on life.
Our friend who has lived and grown up all over the world.. does not reccommend putting the children in a state school in qatar or anywhere else in the middle east because they have different standards of discipline and academics.
I have never been to Qatar myself though. I have lived in Makkah saudi arabia where my nieces attended a private saudi school. And they enjoyed it very much.. and memorized sooooo much Quran MashAllah la quwatta illa billah

As someone said back in canada/usa we are very tightly knitted with our community and to be honest this last one month has been quite borring....don't we have community events here? community center??? anyways all iam saying is, if there are more families like mine out there, lets get together ppl, meet eachother, i really need friends for my kids :P

Salam Alaikum ...I am a converted Muslim and have lived in Qatar for the past 17 years. I love it here. I love hearing the adhan everywhere you go, even on the radio & local TV. I love Ramadan.
The best way to get to know other muslims is thru the schools of your kids and the islamic programs. There are a lot of programs available here. Yes Dr Bilal lives here with his wives & teaches & gives lots of speaches & courses. We also get a lot of other visiting muslims on a regular basis.
Regarding schools with islamic teachings, there are Qatar Academy, Al Jazeera, Al Maha and Choeifat schools that have islamic influence & classes. Dess & Doha College & ADS definately do not have any of it. Unfortunately I can not access some of the sites that I will pass on to you in another reply as I can not access them now. Computer is being silly. I am sure that all of you muslims that come to Qatar will love being here as it will give you an opportunity to get to breath & live in a muslim world.
If any of you want more info you can PM me or on this site. I will try to answer all of your questions.

The masjid is 30 seconds from his door and he can hear the adhan and go to prayer. The overwhelming feeling of joy comes though in his voice.
No one stares at him! In the uk we always felt slightly uncomfortable when walking on the street (not at work) or when entering a shopping establishment. He has felt completely comfortable in Qatar as no one is bogging at him!
Life seems to be cheaper there than in the uk. He got 40 passport photos for less then 5 pounds. Which would have cost how much back home? And he filled up his rental car for only 4 pounds.
Negatives so far have been all the beaurocracy. Took him a whole day just to get his driving license.

I didn't feel uncomfortable ...I didn't feel uncomfortable about walking down the street or going anywhere else in the uk.
I did feel uncomfortable with the clear forms of racist stares, disapproving subtle gestures that was given to me and my husband. Which was one of our major reasons for leaving the country!
As you know I am American and my husband very educated british. We were both wise enough to understand that the Yobos had no qualms yelling out their car windows "paki" (i am clearly white) and "go back to your own country" by one shop keeper as I passed by. Spitting on our car or throwing rocks at me whilst in the park.
A reserved english friend of mine who works with the youth in one of the worst areas of course converted to Islam. She does not wear hijab or show her conversion on the streets. And one time she mentioned that she liked to eat foreign food and 3 of the children did not talk to her for 2 weeks! Imagine if she came in wearing her headscarf and telling people she was muslim and married to a pakistani guy?
Then their is the more subtle gestures by the more refined British. Who will clearly avoid walking in your path so they do not have to pretend to be polite. Or who will keep their sentences short and brief as possible. It is very difficult to fight this obvious racism because how do you point a finger at a person who refuses to sit next to you?
In my time in the uk it seemed that the majority of muslims there did not notice these things. Many of them seemed to just be used to this sort of treatment. I found it interesting that the people who seemed oblivious were asians who seemed very introvert from the british public or those who were trying to be british in every sense.
The muslims that did seem to notice were English converts, English speaking muslims from canada and america who have relocated for marriage, British born and raised without large muslim communities and therefore much more understanding of british culture such as many of my arab friends who looked white. And those Asians who were in professional circles and again not amongst the majority of asians in general.
Having said all this I would not say that the majority of british are racists. This is clearly not true. Their are bridges that need to be built in order to establish understanding between the two communities. Their is a yobo culture in britian however it does not accurately portray the thoughts of the majority. And for the most part if one talks to the british in "their way" then they tend to be very open and understanding in general. And alot of it, I believe, has alot to do with the introverted asian population in britian who have failed to understand social responsibilities with regards to learning british culture and taking part in society! As the british have a yobo population so to do the muslims!

Dear UK Expat, the life here ...Dear UK Expat, the life here will seem boring to you once you come from UK. UK has a big cities (not very modern) and also its weather is colder. It rains a lot there.
Here you will feel desert all around you (very differnt environment). Some part of the Qatar is developed like a modern city and other is not that developed. The social activity for the family may be too less and that is why you and your family will need at least three months to settle here. The atmosphere here is not that concservative (religiously). On the other hand the saving here in Qatar is much more than in Briain as there are no taxes on salary here (if you getting a good package).
Good luck but do think a lot about about your preferences.

The problem with alot of ...The problem with alot of people in the UK is that they haven't had the opportunity to travel and mix with other cultures. They live apart from each other and they see each other as a threat...since 9/11 its got worse and these people think that any muslim (man or woman) is a threat...call it ignorance on their part but thats reality....

PH.. ...I am sorry to hear that.. Where did you actually live ?
I lived amongst a very large Asian Muslim community in Lancashire for a few years. There was racism on both sides, but not as overt as you describe..
I live in London now and there are many many Muslims around. In fact there is a young lady , who wears a hijab and drives a double decker bus in my area.
This is why I find your experience very alarming..
As for your last sentence. I whole heartedly agree with you..

That is true supernurse. ...That is true supernurse.
Many of the younger Brits have translated their anger into racist forms. They are usually part of the Yobo culture in britian and they seem to be angry at the world and have lost all manners and respect for society.
Other older Brits felt apprehensive which I did not blame them in the least. And, in fact, I had neighbor in the last house I lived, who were genteel, kind and open despite their age and fear of the unknown. Who told me, in confidence, that it scares them to see young muslims cover their face. (I did not cover my face living here because I already understood this) And from their cards and tearful goodbyes I think I can honestly say that hubby and I made a good impression. In fact, this was the best neighborhood I ever lived in the uk and I wish I could take all my neighbors with me to Qatar.
What muslims need to understand is that the british have a very reserved culture which requires some delicacy and understanding. And it is easy to see how muslims could give them the wrong impression because of our own corruption and ignorance! We should make an effort to understand our host country rather then alienate them!
Maryum : Umm Hasan bint Abdullah Alshabrawishi

Brit expat I live in mostly ...Brit expat I live in mostly white communities. I tend to stay away from large muslim populations because of the Yobo muslims!
I have lived in London though and you are quite right that it is much more open and understanding. Women would not feel alien in london. Then again who speaks English in london anymore. Last time I asked a question to a white person they ended up being polish.
Lancashire is probably the closest to areas I would have experienced. As they do have overt racism there which is probably why the muslims there are also overtly racist. Again Huge Yobo culture on both sides! I found it interesting in britian that that biggest drug dealers were pakistanis. Talk about giving Islam a bad name!
No I tended to stay away from all those things and learn more about the british! So I stuck with less populated asian areas where a mosque exists or is within driving distance. The truth is that I never ever felt comfortable with asians over there because I found them uneducated and well strange in their thinking and culture. Because I was white they were often racist and overly sensitive against me as well despite being a practicing muslim. The people who became my very best friends were british non muslims, british born arabs, and English converts. And they all accepted me despite being a staunch muslim!
The only thing that really concerned me about the british is that they "tolerated" other cultures rather then embracing them! And the classicsm! (spell check)

britexpat ...first off something for this ignoramus britexpat. I know nothing about Britain. You need to rephrase that to "you know nothing about UK or you think you know but know jack or u is in denial, yeah that's better". My X-GF was a white British. My sentiments up there were hers too . Damn skippy supernurse....millions of British just like my X-GF, her father, her entire family, friends, etc etc share the same sentiments. UK has been invaded, plagued, and taken hostage by Pakis.
I say to you Paki sympathizers:
IMMIGRATION — time to say ENOUGH!
ECONOMY — British workers first!
PENSIONERS — pensioners before asylum seekers!
The locals in the UK need to wake up and reclaim their country before another 7/7 happens.
And this UkEngQatar knuckle head is a definite Paki. You need to take your filthy ass back to where it belongs- Paki. I'm all for students, tourists, business people, but not illegal filth that spreads like cancer.
BNP, BNP, BNP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S: britexpat even if you post the same post 10 times you wont make any sense so cut it out and just vote for BNP.

I left Britain 6 years ago ...I left Britain 6 years ago to come to qatar. Of course the boat was abit rocky in the beginning but all is well now By the grace of Allah. I took the leap 6 years ago and brought all my family here, they too have settled down and like it here. My parents have applauded my decision to take My children away and bring to a muslim country where they would be raised according to Muslim if not islamic principles. It is not perfect here but compared to most Arab countries it is best so far.
My advice bro if you have a family, do 2 rakats salat, make duah and come over, take me as one of the ansar if I can help you as a muhajir.
Insha Allah Allah will put khair in that decision

Playa07 you seem to me ...Playa07 you seem to me extremely hurt by some one and in this frenzy you have lost your way of putting up something logical in a humane manner.
Tell us what happened to you so suddenly that you seem so much agressive. Also let us know your nationality, your profile shows that you are from Qatar.
You are your Ex girl friend were like a philospher. You should have married her for saying such a wise thing. I am sorry she left you or you left her after having so much conformity in such an important issue. You and your girl friend were indeed an ideal model for your life style. May you find another one like that.

NO problem with the guy. But ...NO problem with the guy.
But cannot tolerate racism in any form. Especially when in Britain are find it so hard to over come the National Front of the 70's and the menace of the BNP. Every one has a view and we should respect it but racism and facism should never be entertained. All the hard work of the communities will go down the drain if ppl like him get their way..

They will find ppl from the sub-continent much cheaper than what you are being paid in the UK. Unless you are in Superbisory or Managerial role this place is not for you. Sorry thats what I think. No one is going to pay you the minimum wage her mate..
Life here is as expensive as in the UK.

Haha making me laugh, sorry ...Haha making me laugh, sorry for the comment UkEngQatar above going through a bad time.
I've scored a interview in december as security agent for Qatar Airways its looking good..
playa07 you can keep playing, believe me the UK would be nothing without the jews, indian, polish, muslims whatever , hell i even doubt you're pure british yourself let alone with senses.
I came here for advice i received it, i may consider it, and i thank UkEngQatar for giving it...
Yep i feel sorry for you too playa07 obviously you've met the wrong people and been dealt the wrong hand...funny i live in a place where everyone supports the BNP all the door signs, car stickers and leaflets and still they seem ok..guess you're a minority..
I'd love to leave this country and tell all people like you where to stick it with your low incomes and overpaid taxes and see every minority do the same hey why dont we even appeal for all the saudis, polish, chinese, indians and pakistani's to leave this country and see how it crumbles..but no we've contributed to this nation.
like my family we've been here for 80 years now opened a school for british low incomers and a hostel but sometimes people like you make me wonder why we ever felt sorry for you guys in the first place. People like you deserve to be alone uneducated with nothing and no-where to go.

Good Luck Majid.. I hope ...Good Luck Majid..
I hope your interview goes well. If you need any further advice do not hesitate to contact me through PM.
Yep Playa07 is a minority voice of the Great British Nation and these kinda ppl can find easy excuses for their own failings. Thank God majority of us British do not think like that. I hope he understand that his facist view have no place in the modern society. It easy to see other people fault. He is exploiting the wrong doing of some indiviuals and try to minupilate that and using it for his Nazi propoganda. The bottom line he is a Racist Facist through and through and flith of this earth. But again we have to tolerate these kind of people in our society as we are a free society and these idiots are really exploiting it..
