Qtel Qatar Adopts Ooredoo as New Brand

At a major event in Qatar last night, leading communications company Qtel (Qatar Telecom) rebranded as Ooredoo.
More than 2,000 people attended the event, which was broadcast live on Qatar TV. Attendees included government ministers, ambassadors, media professionals and customers of the company, which was established as Qatar Telecom back in 1987.
The launch of the new brand was celebrated by a spectacular multimedia and theatrical experience about the transformation into Ooredoo, representing the next step in the group’s evolution and celebrating the international achievements of one of Qatar’s leading companies.
H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Bin Saud Al Thani, Chairman, Ooredoo, said: “We have always put our customers at the heart of our business, and this new name shows that we want to be closer to our customers and engage with them in everything that we do. We are proud that Qatar, where the business was born, is the first country in Ooredoo’s international network to integrate with the new global brand. We are not simply about making connections, we are about enriching and empowering the people of Qatar and helping them achieve their goals,” he said.
The celebration also featured a specially-branded film and theatrical performances. Concluding the ceremony, a large group of children holding red balloons entered the amphitheatre, with an amazing ballet performance.
On the international stage, Ooredoo, which announced record-setting revenue and profits in February 2013, has confirmed that each of its operating companies in emerging markets across the Middle East, North Africa and South-East Asia will adopt the new brand during the course of 2013 and 2014.
These companies, in which Ooredoo already has a controlling interest, include brands such as Indosat in Indonesia, Wataniya in Kuwait, Nawras in Oman, Tunisiana in Tunisia, and Nedjma in Algeria.
The Qatari operation, formerly known as Qtel, was the first in the portfolio to take on the bold new brand.

still dont get it... ...I wonder if they made some market research? I dont think its necessary to rebrand as QTEL was very original and spoke of the strength of the branch. It was like trying to fix something that was not broken.

aahhh, let me explain this.. ...aahhh, let me explain this.. again.
Qtel = Qatar Telecom.
Q-Tel bought and established many other Telecom companies around the world currently in 17 different countries.
examples:
Watanya in Iraq.
Nawras in Oman.
Ndejma in Algeria.
Indosat in Indonesia.
... etc.
next step was to band all of them under one name. OOREDOO was chosen.
now all the companies in 17 counties are named OOREDOO as Q-Tel cant suit them all. so over night Qtel became branched out and international as Vodafone.

Like how Saudi Telecom ...Like how Saudi Telecom operates in 10 countries?
Or Turkcell from Turkey in 8 countries?
I still don't understand how oooooredoooo is an improvement, or what was unsuitable about QTel.
Is it that they wanted to try and remove any reference to Qatar from their name?

No honestly I thought it was a joke, "ooredoo" why not cocorrico", hahahah really funny name.
I was trying to imagine the work of the marketing/branding team, they may have been drunk or something, or maybe one was joking and they took it seriously!!! Wow really funny name brand!
