Medical Camp
Good evening everyone, today was a touch of reality, something which I needed.
I had volunteered in a medical camp which was an event that helped people from the subcontienent(mainly low class workers) in educating them in medical fields, giving them free physical check ups, etc. The first moment I entered the camp, my first thought was "what the hell am i doing here?" cause it was full of those construction workers gawking at me and making me feel uncomfortable, children running and screaming and women chattering away. I couldn't go back...I had made a commitment and had to stick to it. Afterall what kind of a doctor would I be if I just left when things got a bit uncomfortable for me ?
I went to my booth and waited for people to approach so I can start explaining stuff. Slowly people started approaching and my first thought was "Oh God!". I know it was cruel of me, but I mean after being in Qatar for this long, U tend to avoid low-class workers. But I had to face them if I wanted to be a proper doctor, my mission was to help people regardless of who they were. And so I did.
As I started talking to more people, they started telling me about their pains, asking for advice, talking about qatar, their life here, family, and slowly i started learning more about them. And then it hit me...
They weren't just workers. They were dads, sons, and brothers. They face problems everyday, they face a life that I could never imagine living. They face abuse and poverty, that I could never bare. More importantly, they wanted to learn. I felt like they were clinging on to my words, listening intentively, asking questions, wanting to now more. I was amazed.
Next time u walk down the street and see a bunch of workers, or drive by and see a bus full of them. Don't just look at them as a bunch of workers but see them as individuals who have been through so much and who fight for their survival everyday. These people are much braver than I'll ever be.

We all need to wake up ...I'm so glad you shared that story. We all really need to wake up to the realities that are around us. It is too easy to ignore people who are less fortunate than us.
Thank you for the reminder.

You should be proud of ...You should be proud of yourself. Being a Nigerian,I have seen and know a lot of less priviledged people that can't even afford to buy medicines. There are a lot of people that need medical treatment but can't get it. I wish I was in Doha to attend such camps, will see if it also takes place in the summer.

and yet.. ...All that compassion derived from a few hours spent outside your air conditioned office and now you are a hero. Exactly what is a "low class" person? Do I see a Nobel Prize on the horizon?

Well done Cornellian ...Good to know that you got a chance to know about the life of this under privileged people around us. We normally dont get a chance to think about this people or rather we forget about them because of our comfy life style we enjoy here. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Remembered the plight of workers ...Great effort. But i heard a story from one of the close mates about the IDP education australia thing....
One of the workers son studied from one of the universities in Australia and returned without work... I am puzzled about the whole appalling incident like many of the low income workers spend around 36 lacs of IRS and return without any luck...
Their plight is even appaling and what more is that a few high income expatriates have done some stray act of benevolence....
Keep up the gud work.....

Volunterring gives a good sense of acomplishment ...Helping out others always feels good. You said that you felt uncomfortable at first because of the income the people had and then become more comfortable with them as time went by and you started seeing that as human. This can occur a lot for people as we start to become biased toward certain groups then, when we've been around them for a little bit we become more comfortable in our surroundings and with people in general.

Humiliation ...I think that at some point we all get comfortable with our own status. The clothes we wear, the amount of money we make and the amount our friends make and where we go on vacation that when we see someone of a different class we start to pass judgment and assume that they are just bums. So, when we are faced with having to be in communication with them we feel uncomfortable. Then we start talking to them and find that they are people, it is what is at the root of us all. We all are made up of the same things and live off of air and food. We then feel terrible, we ask ourselves,'what type of a person are you?' We don't want to believe that we are really that shallow but in reality, once we walk away we will go back to our family and our friends who make the same amount of money as we do and we will forget how humble that one act of humanity felt. I think that we all need to not only remember that feeling but keep it for ever so that it keeps us grounded. Narconon Vista Bay
