Theft in Carrefour Villagio

UkEngQatar's picture

Dear All, BEWARE

(We are British/Swedish Expat Family)

A bit of advice about keeping an extra eye open on your personal belongings when shopping in Villagio and especially in Carrefour. My wife's purse was taken from her shopping trolley while shopping in Carrefour last Friday. Our four year old daughter was sitting in the trolley when this happened, but it not deter the theif to take her purse full of cash and cards, driving licence health card etc.

When our daughter told us that a man had taken something from the trolley and found that the purse was missing. First we could not believe that this sort of thing could happen in Qatar and second in a busy place like Carrefour on a Friday. The security guards were so slow in reacting and about time a supervisor came to talk to us it was almost 20 minutes later. All those security guys you see in Carrefour are not there to help you but to keep an eye on shopliffters as we found out.

Anyhow after an half an hour the security supervisor offered us to show the CCTV footage to indentify the theif. We found that the CCTV in Carrefour does not cover all aisles but only the main corridors. So no luck at all as they seem very relaxed about it, they did not take any statement only our contact number saying if they found the wallet they will inform us.

The suspect was of an indian/nepalese appearance, wearing a blue Shirt and of medium build. Please be warned and take extra care when shopping and don't treat Qatar/Doha/Villagio or any other busy place as safe. Either the theifs have become more daring and have no fear or may be the security authorities are not given much priority to these sort of crime.

Now we a have long task of applying for the health cards agian and the driving licence etc, not to mention the other important things one keeps in their wallet the contact numbers and important photos ect.

Please write back and advise whom and where to report stolen property, that if the wallet is found where to go an look for it.

There was something similar posted on the site last week, at the Family Food Center.

File a police report. This is obviously an organized ring and the police will crack it. Seems they are changing venues.

What time and what day did this happen?

You must report it to the police.

King Edshel said So Sorry ...

I'm really so sorry to hear such stories and really sad for your lose. Thank you for warning other people of such things, but it do happen all the time. I don't even take my wallet with me when I go to such places and I do go there when I really need something. These crowed places are not my favorite. I take this amount of money so I can make sure that nothing like that would happen and to buy what I was coming to the Villagio for. Going to these places with any amount of money, would let you spend more than what you really need.

So sorry again to hear about that and I hope that you would be getting over it soon. These security guys there have nothing to do but to tell you that they will inform you about any new thing that would happen. If you were having a doubt that you might drop that wallet or bag somewhere and you can't remember, then there is still hope that some good people will find it and give it to the security or the Carrefour management people. I'm so sorry that it was a thief who take that so why would he give it back after he steal it? :(

So sorry again and let god be with you, protect you from any thefts in the future and help you getting the new cards soon.

Best regards

I think you might have to go to the police station near the the Souqs in town. It is beside HSBC. I had to go there one time to file a report and they found the freak the next day and called me. It wasnt for a stolen item it was for a stalker :(

If you go there I believe they will act upon your report.
Hope you find the theif.

Theft is a common thing in Qatar nowdays. My wallet has been stolen out of my pocket in Al Asmakh Mall (Centerpoint).

Luckily it was a wallet I just bought and there was only a couple of credit cards, which I stopped immediately.

I have friends whose car was broken into (it was parked on the Corniche) while they were having a walk.

In other words - don't relax. It is as bad as anywhere else. With armed robberies going on in Dubai, we should be prepared for things like this as well.

We were shopping in Villagio yesterday, as we were parking there was a suspicious looking guy watching us getting out of the car, he actually crossed the road to stand as close as possible to our car, i looked back a few times whilst walking into the shops and he was then standing right next to my car peering in. What can one do without harassing the guy, he may just have been innocently standing there, but on returning to the car about 2 hours later he was still hanging around my car. Be very aware, put your bag into the car before unloading your shopping and lock the door. It is especially difficult to unload with kids, prams etc to get distracted and you are a soft target, but give these guys half a chance and they'll take it - it's a symptom of our society. They are living on the breadline - QR 800 a month salary and we pay 20 times that just for housing!! Not that this is any sort of justification but it's gonna happen so be aware!

Guys, I keep my wallet either in my front pocket or in a lower side pocket if I'm wearing cargos.

Qatar is becoming more expensive all the time. We here on the forum complain. What about the laborers and the lowly-paid parts of society? It's not surprising some will try to supplement their income by resorting to crime on their day off.

It's inexcusable and I'm sure we'll read a report in the papers sometime in the future that such a ring has been apprehended but the point is be smart and don't invite trouble.

It seems like they are primarily striking on Friday, taking advantage of the chaos around.

My nanny had her bag stolen at Landmark some time back, so they pretty much target anybody.

I was at carrefour this morning, as I avoid shopping on the weekend. It's alot calmer and much easier to spot potential thieves.

It's sad that crime has risen here. It used to be such a safe place. The police are obviously not doing their jobs, and the security guards probably get paid peanuts anyway, so they probably don't care at all.

Disagree, lamea. There will always be classes in society and the lower classes will always covet things they can't afford.

While laborers in Doha do get the short end of the stick and much can be done to improve their, lot the majority of them are law-abiding and grit their teeth and bear the situation as best as they can. It is those who deserve our kindness and generosity.

Those who commit crimes have probably had previous experience back home and bring with them their unwanted and undesirable skills.

Thanks all your your kind advice and sincere thoughts. We are new to Qatar only 6 months here. We had just got back from our holiday on Friday morning. Very tired with an over night flight, may be that may have lead us to be some what careless.

We have lived in London all our lives except for my wife who has been living there for the last 8 years. I have had my car broken in many times in London. So we are aware that opportunist no matter where will take the chance.

If it had not been for our 4 year old daughter sitting in the Trolley, may be we would have not known that we have been robbed.

As far as the thoughts for the underpaid labourers goes may be the Authorities should really address this so this sort of crime does not encourage others to do similar things.

I wish I was there, I could for sure catch the thief, or at least noticed him stealing your bag. I won't be surprised if you receive a call from police saying that they have found your non-credit cards only (e.g. health and driving license), as the thief will look to discard useless cards by throwing them on a place far from his location, probably the corniche.

Always keep your important stuff held by your hand. Many sick haters go to Carrefour. Thank God he didn't steal your baby.

And BTW, Security Men in Qatar suck ass, they are so stupid, omg, and useless. These security companies hire men who didn't pass any education level, that's why they are very stupid. OMG! Never asks for their help, wasting time.

coming from London I think, certainly in my case I have been lulled into a false sense of security perhaps we all have.

Its nice here to know that you can leave the Car or even the house unlocked and come back and still find it there.

I remember two weeks after I arrived here I went looking for cars, After an Hour I came back to see that I had left the front windows open car unlocked and luckily my digital camera was still on the Dash.

It would be a shame if this changed but I imagine this is inevitable, the country is growing fast and there will always be unsavory elements that move in with them.

I wouldn't be surprised if a more unsavoury element from around the GCC and Middle East is behind this probably seeing Qatar as a "soft touch".

I would not be so quick to blaame the labourers even though they are so poor. I think some may be desperate but they also need the jobs.

Its not the honest labourers or other low paid workers. I stake my reputation on it. I believe the new line of expatriates from south africa, Korea, thailand. Organised crime, there you go. They need to to get CCTVs and other security structures. If it can happen in villagio, it can happen anywhere. Oh, about the increasing living expenses, its gotta come down. You never know. One fine day you'll wake up to find a qrs 40 per KG of lettuse or cucumber. The way the commodities are shooting up, its getting rough on 60% of the population. Whats the point? I would suggest making residential areas for people with salaries of under qrs6000. Then getting around to enforcing quality into the commercial sector.

Cheers to a happy and prosperous Qatar

Respected Ladies & Gents,

As a Coolie, I object to the underlying message in many comments here that assume that we, the lowest strata of this society, are responsible for every act of thievery in this country. These are unsubstantiated allegations and it is deplorable that the literati of Qatar would resort to such blanket statements that further malign our stereotype. At the end of the day, my needs are the same as yours. On my days off, I come down to Doha for a picnic on some round-about with my mates. You lot leave the city on your Land Cruisers (lately Hummers) to go Dune Bashing. We eat Samosas and drink Pepsi from a 3 litre bottle; while you lot sip wine and nibble on barbecued lamb served with Artichoke & stuffed olives salad. You smell of Designer Perfume; I smell of honest sweat. Not all coolies are thieves; not all rich people are involved in "misappropriation of funds". Sure, we're different; but, not that different. I can live with the stigma of being Smelly, uneducated, etc. but, Thief is where I draw the line. I hope you understand. It's a lovely evening and it's time for my glass of After-shave. Shrimati Moonbeam,

First of all, I apologize profusely for my racism and hatred. Your comments have opened my eyes no end. Now the light shineth where once there was darkness and I can see everything better. I just realized that we labourers are very racist. I have quietly observed my ilk for the past 15 minutes and realized many new things.

For instance, we don’t speak to the white man unless spoken to. This must be really hurtful to the white man and he/she must be crying him(her)self to sleep, every night over this slight. Also, we are outrageously discriminatory when it comes to employment. I have looked all around my camp and discovered that there is not even one single White labourer! I tell you, this entire labourer market is run in the manner of an old-boys-club. This is discrimination at its worst. Oh, wait a minute, how can I forget the buses? Truly, Whites are not allowed on the buses in Qatar; as I’m yet to spot one on it. Damn, this is deplorable.

A century after Lincoln, decades after Martin Luther King, we still haven’t evolved as a society; and the blame madam, lies squarely on the shoulders of the labourer – neatly wedged under those huge chips you mentioned. As soon as I have posted this comment, I am off to write a long letter to the UN about this serious anomaly and will implore them to take immediate action against the culprits. I will not stop there either. As a show of defiance against the racist labourer hegemony I am organizing a protest march that will culminate in a bus ride along the Corniche tomorrow at 4 PM. My likeminded liberal/secular labourer friends and I, will accompany all white labourers who want to take a bus-ride for the first time in the history of this country. Together, we will rid society of its ills through revolution. Fear not my brethren; a new world of equality awaits us. FREEEEDOOOMMM…

Hanna - Firstly, As much as I empathise with your situation I cannot still comprehend why you would leave a wallet full of credit cards and cash in your shopping cart. Do you do that back home? Sweden I'm not sure, but definitely not in the UK.

You do not need organised criminals to do this kind of stuff. It could just be an opportunity crime. With the current demographics and wage structure of Qatar, you can only expect to hear of more such incidents in the future.

Secondly, you'd do your (similarily misinformed) co-workers a great favour by taking up this incident at your workplace (maybe at the next months townhall meeting, or during a safety moment)

Also, do not expect much help from these "security guards". They are no more than labourers in pressed white uniforms. For their level of skills and for what they are paid, you cannot expect them to do anymore than just stand on their two feet for a 8-12 hr shift.

After looking for Police station we managed to locate the so called Police Station. It was nothing like what we are used to back home in the UK, anybody hardly spoke English and our Arabic is almost nil. For start it was not called Police Station but Minsiter of Interior Security Division, which is located behind Khalifa stadium, they have different reporting for lost items and stolen ones. When we managed to get to the right person they could not speak English and we were told to come back with a translator. So now we have to find a translator to accompany us to Al Rayan Police/Security division to file the report.

Thankyou once again for all your comments. Regarding the comment about leaving the wallat/purse in the trolley I am afraid I have been doing this for years either it be Sweden or Tesco/Sainsbury in the UK. But I have to admit that it is not the best thing nad have paid a price for my carelessness.

By the way i hope South Africa give u a hiding in the Super 14. JERK!

Carrefour was the first store to be opened in Villaggio Mall.
There was two gates that were opened for customers. One was right on front of Carrefour. The other was on the back of the mall.

no wires mixed up matey, go to Xyneds comment on this forum of 24/04 regarding the new breed of South African Expatriates and the incidence of organised crime. Why do you think we are here? to get away from it, not regroup in the middle east for a little easy pickings. We took offence to that suggestion. Thus our response - no apologies. At all!!!

Was just reading up on this thread.

About 2 weeks ago, my Mac book pro laptop, ipod and sunglasses were stolen from my pathfinder parked at the Sheraton Hotel.

Ironically it was parked beside the security post.

A window of one of the passenger seats was broken. If you've seen a Pathfinder closely you'd have noticed that the passenger side of the window has 2 glass windows (one big n one small .. Only the big part slides down when the window opened)

The smaller glass of the window was shattered. And the security claim to have seen nothing...

Frickin absolutely ridiculous ....

A complaint has been registered with the police .. But no word till now.

It happened to a friend of mine too in Dukhan about 8 months ago..

There sometimes people used to leave the doors unlocked sometimes as it is considered quite safe in there.

Believe it or not, this friend's house was burgled in Dukhan, gold ornaments were stolen and this friend didn't even know about it until the thief was caught red handed a month later.

When they caught the thief, the police asked people to check if they are missing valuable items from their houses. That is when this friend realized he has lost gold .. which was recovered from the person apprehended.

what we need is right people for the right task. So we need proper literacy and a minimum k12 education for such positions. When you are a labour you are a labour and then you are a labour. Watch it? Sickening isnt it until 2000 or something these incidents were between far and few. Mind yo we have very few shopping centers. 1 incident is enough to question security measures and everything. I think new and ingenius thievery are done my those south east asians. i mean those chinese, koreans, thai etc. Did you know....During late 80's there were a handfull of these people here. And what I recollect from back then is cannibalism. Then a few months back...guess what same again. Qatar's media keeps a viel over such attrocities. i cant blame them. Their hands are tied. I dont mind hushing up the media. If its what they want. The labour ministry's gotta vent the inflow of such animal race.

cheers

First and foremost, thank you for this thread. While I am genuinely sorry to hear of those who have fallen victim to theft in Doha, I am also one of those people who takes lessons from others. I will definitely not 1. Leave anything of value unattended while shopping; 2. Leave anything of value in my car.

****

In addressing the whole issue which has arisen through the bit of racial profiling for thieves, anyone can be a thief. There are white American people who should have their hands chopped off. I really like the law in places like Saudi Arabia, where your second or third repeat offense means you get your hand chopped off. Those people don't mess around like they do in the States and give thieves a mere slap on the hand and 3 months' probation. *That's* something I can get behind. Theft is to be abhorred, as are the people who engage in it.

I quite happily left the United States in order to escape the 'xenophobic stereotyping of nationalities' craze which has taken the States by storm. I certainly did not come to Qatar to engage in the same destructive and narrow-minded behavior. Part of what drew me to Doha was the opportunity to meet people from so many different countries, and walks of life.

I saw a similar thing when I lived in Arizona, where it was assumed that it's Mexicans who steal your car, sell drugs, and rape your daughter. The xenophobic bitter white Americans I encountered who thought this somehow managed to overlook the white teenagers who sold drugs on the street corner just blocks from the University of Arizona. Yeah, those sketchy-looking white folk must *definitely* be Mexicans in disguise.

You have to be careful, I've learned. Not all whites think Indian people, or black South Africans, or Filipinos, or whoever else you wish to throw in the mix, are thieves. I certainly don't. *Anyone* who dares to nick my stuff, no matter the reason, ought to be drug into the street and bludgeoned with large stones.

At the same time, it shouldn't be assumed that all white people live high on the hog either, and exist merely so the so-called 'lower' races can wait on them hand and foot. I for one am embarrassed that someone pumps my gas, and someone else insists upon bringing me coffee and water at the office, and someone else emptys my trash. It's as though I'm completely incapable of doing these things myself as a young white female. I tried to pump my own gas recently and was shouted at for touching the pump. Okey dokey...

Quite unfortunately, it is the people from India, and Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, and the Philippines, who are willing to do these jobs. After all, as was stated already here, the average 'privileged' white certainly wouldn't. It's the same situation in the States. A lot of Mexicans come across the border and get jobs as farm workers, or housekeeping, or whatever menial job you can think of. Our minimum wage is a king's ransom in Mexico, so Mexican people will do the 'crappy' jobs in order to give their families a little better quality of life.

The same thing happens here. I read an article in the IHT a week or two ago about Indian people who come to Qatar to earn money to send to their families, who cannot join them in Qatar due to the high costs or visa restrictions/prohibitions or what have you.

Don't think, though, that white people have never done the 'menial' labor either. I've done my share to get myself through school, to get to where I am now. Cleaning toilets, lifting boxes, digging holes by hand to plant shrubs, picking potatoes, picking rocks, shelving books, locating books, all those things and more. I may have a good job now, but I don't forget where I came from or what I did to get here.

Heh. It's interesting what you learn about the world when you're willing to get off the front porch and go see it for yourself.

ETA--I made an errir, and typed the profanity I was thinking of, forgetting forum rules briefly. Mea Culpa.

But I am surprised why you didn’t take the purse to any police station in Doha! There must be finger prints on it! And you know the Qatari police keep a record of all expatriates finger prints! They will definitely come to know who he was!
