Woman Gets Two Years for Aiding Nigerian Internet Check Scam (PC World)

Posted on Wed Jun 25, 2008 8:30PM EDT
- A Washington woman was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison and five years of supervised release for her role in an Internet counterfeit check scheme.

Edna Fiedler pleaded guilty in March to attempting to defraud U.S. citizens in a scheme known as a Nigerian check scam.

Fiedler helped her accomplices in Nigeria send fake checks to people who had agreed to cash the checks on behalf of the sender, keeping some of the proceeds and sending the rest back.

The Nigerians found people willing to cash the fake checks via e-mail. They would send their names as well as fake documents that looked like Wal-Mart money orders, Bank of America checks, U.S. Postal Service checks and American Express traveler's checks to Fiedler. They told her how to fill out the checks and where to send them.

The recipients most likely thought they were helping out someone who needed a person in the U.S. to cash a check for them, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. They were able to get the money by cashing the checks, and sent most of it to either Fiedler or her Nigerian accomplices. However, once the checks were discovered to be fake, the people who cashed them were responsible for the full amount.

All told, Fiedler sent out US$609,000 worth of phony checks and money orders. When U.S. Secret Service agents investigating the case searched Fiedler's house, they found additional fake checks worth more than $1.1 million that she was preparing to send out.

At a recent conference in Seattle, a representative from the U.S. Postal Service and Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna described ways they're working to shut down these kinds of scams, particularly because they often involve people who don't realize that they're taking part in illegal activities.

The U.S. Postal Service recently sent 15 postal investigators to Lagos, Nigeria, and during a three-month period there, they helped intercept counterfeit checks, lottery tickets and eBay overpayment schemes with a face value of $2.1 billion, Chris Siouris, a cyber investigator at the U.S. Postal Inspector, said at the recent conference. Siouris, McKenna and others are pushing for ways to better educate Internet users so that people don't unwittingly help out in these kinds of e-mail scams.

Speed Comments:
I remember one of QL member who posted a thread saying that he received a cheque from outside Qatar and later when he approached the bank, he found that it is a fake cheque ? but luckily he managed to leave the bank without any trouble, otherwise as per law he could have face criminal charges !!!!

This is for the awareness for QL members and all the guest. Also please inform others not to get trapped in such scams.

URGENT APPEAL - For Fire Victims

Five burnt to death in house blaze
Published: Friday, 20 June, 2008, 12:59 AM Doha Time
By Arvind Nair

FIVE Sri Lankan men were charred to death on Wednesday night as they slept in their room in a downtown apartment.
Two of their friends have been admitted to Hamad Hospital with serious burn injuries. Two others jumped to safety from their second storey apartment.
Nine of them were sleeping in one room as the fire engulfed it, the charge d’affaires at the Sri Lankan embassy, A Dharmakulasingham, said.
The police have identified the dead as Thu[this post has broken our guidelines by using bad language - you will be removed from QL if this continues]ha Ananda Abeywickrama (from Ambilipitiya), Roshan Thu[this post has broken our guidelines by using bad language - you will be removed from QL if this continues]ha Kumara (Akurassa), Nimal (Chilaw), Amila Madusanka (Bulathsinhala) and Nalinda Kumara (Thambuthegama).
They all belonged to the 25-30 age group, the embassy official said.
The two seriously injured Sri Lankans have been admitted to the emergency unit of the Hamad Hospital. They are Dulan Salika Ratnasiri (from Hatton) and Vijitha Aluthgedera (Ginigathhena). Dulan is still in a critical condition while Vijitha is said to be out of danger.
Those who escaped the inferno at building No. 22, Street No. 4, at Al Maymoon Street in Doha are Nishantha Mangalajeews (from Adhawila, Banagala, Opatha), and Salitha Prasad, (Àthnagoda, Beligala, Kegalle).
The charge d’affaires told Gulf Times that officials of the mission were in constant touch with the authorities and had visited the injured at the hospital.
Bodies of the deceased will be flown to Sri Lanka as soon as legal procedures are completed, hopefully by next week, Dharmakulasingham said.
Those in nearby rooms escaped unhurt as the firemen came and doused the blaze. A total of 35 Sri Lankans were living in the four-room apartment.
According to sources, they all worked for different companies.
According to Lenny Cramer, president of the Sri Lankan Co-ordinating Committee, the fire broke out in the ill-fated room around 11.30pm on Wednesday as the occupants slept after a hard day’s toil.
Those who woke up first tried to wake others but failed to do so. The ever increasing smoke in the room probably had put them to permanent sleep, community sources speculated.
Fellow room-mates had no option but to try and save themselves. Two of them managed to do it by jumping out but two others suffered serious burns in the process.
The cause of fire has not yet been established, the charge d’affaires said. However, there were speculations of an electric short-circuit.
Yesterday, the Sri Lankan community, led by the co-ordination committee, rallied to help those affected by the fire. The immediate call was to find accommodation for those who were left homeless by the blaze.
As the community leaders sent out e-mails seeking help, the response has been tremendous, Lenny said. All the basic essentials for the victims, who lost everything to the fire, have been collected. They include foodstuff, bed-sheets, clothing, toothpaste and similar stuff.
By yesterday evening, it was decided that half of the stranded people would be accommodated temporarily at the Sri Lankan school while the other half would be put up in a villa.
This is purely a stop-gap arrangement until a more permanent accommodation for them could be found in a couple of days, Lenny said.
This is the third fire in a week, and the second in the same vicinity. The first in the area, however, did not claim any lives though the entire flat was reduced to cinders.
The other fire, which occurred during lunch-time on Tuesday at the Industrial Area, killed a 38-year-old businessman as he took an afternoon nap in his warehouse.

Source : Gulf-Times.com

Special Thanks to : ritzymac (http://www.qatarlivi...)

First of all Thanks You to all those who supported QL Volunteer Group 'World Blood Donor Day' today in Villaggio.

When I reached HMC Blood Bank, There were already so many people waiting in a que for their turn, and I was surprised to see that most of them were Arab (if am not wrong out of those Arabs most them were Qataris), which shows that Qataris/Arabs do give blood on regular basis.
There were some expatriates also incl myself ;-p

Also i noticed that they were returning few people since they were not fit to donate blood due to underweight, less hemoglobins, may be there were on medicines or due to some unknown disease etc...
The lady who looks like a 'SUPERNURSE' was the one who was testing everyone's blood group/ weight/ temperature/ Blood Pressure etc ....

Anyhow, for me it was a great experience and I feel very relaxed. After donating blood I went shopping with my family and just returned home happily !

They gifted all blood donors with :

1) Certificate of World Donor Day and HMC names/Logos
2) T-shirt and a Cap of WDD and HMC
3) Juices and snacks

A relief flight by Qatar arrived in the Yangon airport in
Myanmar yesterday as charity officials reported progress in getting
help to the 1mn people left homeless by last week’s cyclone.
Qatar’s assistance, totalling 45 tonnes, included medicines, clothes,
tents, first aid bags, children’s milk. It was received at the airport
by the
chairman of the relief and rescue committee in Myanmar.
More shipments of Qatari assistance are to follow.
The tropical cyclone Nargis, which slammed into the rice-growing
Irrawaddy Delta region in the country’s south on May 3, left 60,000
people dead or missing and as many as 2mn more short of food, water and
supplies.
Myanmar held a referendum on a new constitution yesterday, despite warnings
more people would die unless it focused on delivering emergency aid for
survivors of last week’s cyclone. The military government, deeply
suspicious of the outside world, has refused to let in foreign experts
who specialise in getting aid to disaster victims, and said that only
the government would be allowed to distribute emergency supplies. –
QL Volunteers Group : SPEED

The QL Volunteers Group was one of the first groups setup on Qatar Living. Aisha, one of our most prolific members setup the group and arranged for Qlers to give back to those less fortunate in Qatar by volunteering their time and energy:

I’m really excited and happy that we will start a QL group for our volunteers! This is just great. After the QL Blood Donation Camp1, the QL visits for children with special needs, and a couple of charitable projects organized by our dear QL members, we’ll have our own , hopefully growing, group!! Yaaay

SPEED has shown the same enthusiasm, caring and spirit in organising last weeks activities. Many people have nominated SPEED as group owner and I'm glad to announce that he has agreed to take on this task and help QLers give back!

If you have some time and want to get involved, please head over to the QL Volunteers Group and sign up!

requirements blood donation

GENERAL GUIDELINES
To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law, weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or a donation of double red cells in the last 16 weeks (111 days). "Healthy" means that you feel well and can perform normal activities. If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure, "healthy" also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.

Other aspects of each potential donor's health history are discussed as part of the donation process before any blood is collected. Each donor receives a brief examination during which temperature, pulse, blood pressure and blood count (hemoglobin or hematocrit) are measured.

Making donations for your own use during surgery (autologous blood donation) is considered a medical procedure and the rules for eligibility are less strict than for regular volunteer donations.
Acupuncture
Donors who have undergone acupuncture treatments are acceptable.

Age
You must be at least 17 years old to donate to the general blood supply, or 16 years old if allowed by state law. Learn more about the reasons for a lower age limit. There is no upper age limit for blood donation as long as you are well with no restrictions or limitations to your activities.

Allergy, Stuffy Nose, Itchy Eyes, Dry Cough
Acceptable as long as you feel well, have no fever, and have no problems breathing through your mouth

Antibiotics
A donor with an infection should not donate. The reason for antibiotic use must be evaluated to determine if the donor has a bacterial infection that could be transmissible by blood.

Acceptable after finishing oral antibiotics for an infection (bacterial or viral). Acceptable 7 days after an antibiotic injection for an infection. Acceptable if you are taking antibiotics to prevent an infection, for example, following dental procedures or for acne. Antibiotics for acne do not disqualify you from donating. If you have a temperature above 99.5 F, you may not donate.

Asthma
Acceptable as long as you are not having difficulty breathing at the time of donation and you otherwise feel well. Medications for asthma do not disqualify you from donating.

Birth Control
Women taking birth control (pills or injections) are acceptable.

Blood Pressure, High
Acceptable as long as your blood pressure is below 180 systolic (first number) and below 100 diastolic (second number) at the time of donation. Medications for high blood pressure do not disqualify you from donating.

Blood Pressure, Low
Acceptable as long as you feel well when you come to donate. If your blood pressure normally runs low, it may be more difficult for your body to adjust to the volume loss following donation, especially if you are dehydrated. Drinking extra water before and after donation is important.

Blood Transfusion
Wait for 12 months after receiving a blood transfusion from another person in the United States.

You may not donate if you received a blood transfusion since 1980 in the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar or Falkland Islands). This requirement is related to concerns about variant CJD, or 'mad cow' disease. Learn more about variant CJD and blood donation.

You may not donate if you received a blood transfusion in certain countries in Africa since 1977. This requirement is related to concerns about rare strains of HIV that are not consistently detected by all current test methods. Learn more about HIV Group O, and the specific African countries where it is found.

Cancer
Eligibility depends on the type of cancer and treatment history. If you had leukemia or lymphoma, including Hodgkin’s Disease and other cancers of the blood, you are not eligible to donate. Other types of cancer are acceptable if the cancer has been treated successfully and it has been at least 5 years since treatment was completed and there has been no cancer recurrence in this time. Some low-risk cancers including squamous or basal cell cancers of the skin do not require a 5 year waiting period.

Precancerous conditions of the uterine cervix do not disqualify you from donation if the abnormality has been treated successfully. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.

Chronic Illnesses
Most chronic illnesses are acceptable as long as you feel well, the condition is under good control, you have an adequate hemoglobin level and your temperature is normal when you come to donate, and you meet all other eligibility requirements.

Bleeding Condition
If you have a history of bleeding problems, you will be asked additional questions. If your blood does not clot normally, you should not donate since you may have excessive bleeding where the needle was placed. For the same reason, if you are taking any "blood thinner" (such as coumadin or heparin) you should not donate. If you are on aspirin, it is OK to donate blood. However, you must be off of aspirin for at least 48 hours in order donate platelets by apheresis.

Cold, Flu
Wait if you have a fever or a productive cough (bringing up phlegm)
Wait until you have completed antibiotic treatment for sinus, throat or lung infection.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD)
If you ever received a dura mater (brain covering) transplant or human pituitary growth hormone, you are not eligible to donate. Those who have a blood relative who had Creutzfeld-Jacob disease are also not eligible to donate. Learn more about CJD.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, Variant (vCJD); "Mad Cow Disease"
See under Travel Outside of U.S. Learn more about vCJD and blood donation.

Dental Procedures and Oral Surgery
Acceptable after dental procedures as long as there is no infection present. Wait until finishing antibiotics for a dental infection. Wait for 3 days after having oral surgery.

Insulin
Those who since 1980, received an injection of bovine (beef) insulin made from cattle from the United Kingdom are not eligible to donate. This requirement is related to concerns about variant CJD, or 'mad cow' disease. Learn more about variant CJD and blood donation.

Donation Intervals
Wait at least 8 weeks between whole blood (standard) donations.
Wait at least 3 days between plateletpheresis donations.
Wait at least 16 weeks between double red cell (automated) donations.

Heart Disease
In general , acceptable as long as you have been medically evaluated and treated, have no current (within the last 6 months) heart related symptoms such as chest pain and have no limitations or restrictions on your normal daily activities.
Wait at least 6 months following an episode of angina.
You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.
