the Untold Story of Filipina's Triumphs...

Her mother has always been proud of her. Mighty proud. And rightly so.
In the spring of 1991, Julia Roberts graced the cover of People Magazine's
special issue featuring its annual list of The 50 Most Beautiful People in
the World. Together with Julia Roberts in this ultimate list of the most
beautiful people were Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Madonna, Mel Gibson, Whitney
Houston, Michelle Pfeiffer, Isabella Rossellini, supermodels Claudia
Schiffer & Naomi Campbell and oops*a Filipina?
Yes, People Magazine's 1991 list of The 50 Most Beautiful People in the
World included a true-blooded Filipina who was born, raised and educated
in the Philippines.
Unlike most beautiful Filipinas who were the products of mixed marriages
and who have therefore acquired foreign physical features, this Filipina
was born to a Filipina mother and a Filipino father. It is no wonder that
she does not typify a beautiful woman by any standard: She is short,
standing only 5'2". She has a huge and deep acne scar on her forehead. She
has that distinct Asian nose (read: flat). She uses only Avon cosmetics (
gasp!) and applies makeup by herself. During her pre-Inno Sotto days, her
clothes were not made by known couturiers: They were lovingly sewn at home
by her mother who is a dressmaker. She does not even have the right genes
to inherit beauty from: Her mother was plain, even stern-looking. Her
father was a dark-skinned guy with the tough facial features of a hardened
military man.
Although both the first names of her mother and father means happy in two
different languages, their union was not as joyous. Her mother and father
were never married, making her and her only brother illegitimate children.
In the mistress hierarchy, her mother was not even her father's second
woman. Her father had a first mistress who ranked above her mother. She
and
her brother only belong to their father's third family. And yes, the gay
club performer who once appeared on national television was indeed her
half-brother. She couldn't therefore be faulted for not talking about her
father. In contrast, too much has been known about her mother. Her mother
was always visible, too visible for comfort.
Her mother gave her the name Carmen and raised her in a province north of
Manila. However, when it was time for her to go to school, her
overprotective mother brought her and her brother to Manila to give them
the best education. Carmen studied in Preciosa Soliven's Operation
Brotherhood Montessori in Greenhills where she emerged as the school's
valedictorian. However, Carmen's academic rival protested the school's
decision to award Carmen the school's highest honors, claiming that she
had
better grades than Carmen. Carmen's rival even revealed that the school's
owner, Mrs. Soliven, was only fond of Carmen because she always performed
in school programs which gave Carmen an edge in extra-curricular
activities. But academically, Carmen reportedly did not really rise above
her rival.
Lured into show business, Carmen became part of German Moreno's inane
daily
afternoon TV show, That's Entertainment, where she got paired with
comedian
and now Quezon City Vice Mayor Herbert "Bistek" Bautista. (Some say that
Vice Mayor Bautista was so enamored with Carmen that he later refused to
marry his partner despite their having a child.) As one of the countless
stars of Kuya Germ's That's Entertainment, Carmen's talent was
overshadowed
by the ridiculous mass appeal of the triumvirate of Sheryl Cruz, Manilyn
Reynes and Tina Paner.
Later, Carmen made a couple of forgettable films which were big flops.
Unsuccessful in local show business, Carmen enrolled as a BS Biology
student in Ateneo de Manila, hoping to become a doctor. However, the lure
of fame and fortune shattered her medical ambition. She followed her other
dream and landed in*Dreamland! Yes, instead of comforting innocent and
fresh-smelling babies in a hospital, she ended up entertaining horny,
sweaty and foul-smelling drunken men in seedy bars.
When Carmen was a little girl, a local manghuhula predicted that she would
be crowned Miss Universe. Her mother, legally known as Miss Imutan, was
ecstatic upon hearing this. Sadly, the prophecy did not come true.
However,
when Carmen was 18 years old, she bagged a beauty title. But it was
farfetched from a Miss Universe crown. Carmen became Miss Saigon.
Yes, the only true-blooded Filipina who was included in People Magazine's
The 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1991 is Feliciano Salonga and
Ligaya "Joy" Imutan's only daughter: Carmen Lea Imutan Salonga.
Most of us know her simply as Lea Salonga...

agree with you QI ...i like lea salonga yes i do. i got the chance to meet her personally & i really liked her character especially off-cam. very vibrant girl & never a loss for words & kwento. what we see of lea on screen is but 5% of who she really is. in one word i can call her MAJESTIC.
but again hers is a personal achievement.

I like Lea Salonga ...She was the first Filipino/Filipina singer that I ever heard and the song was "The Journey" but now I got lots of songs for her ... there is something about her voice that I can't tell but always make you want to listen more ...

Lea Salonga?!... ...i had a great time with her, nung ako ay musmos pa lamang (elementary days) I had an audition for modeling i meet her that time, sobrang smart and very confident talaga. outstanding ang personality hindi ko sya nakalimutan, star struck ako sa kanya and immediately naging fan nya ako...

haven't you noticed no ...haven't you noticed no matter how talented lea is, she never had the same recognition/fame in the philippines as what the rest of the world has given her, remember back in 80's, 90's and even now i think, kung sino ang maganda or guapo especially pag fil-am, mas mapapansin pa kahit walang talent at pali-palipit pa magtagalog. kaya ang bagal umasenso ng philippine movie industry as compared to bollywood of india or chinese movies, even thai movies are slowly penetrating international screens...

personal achievement... ...i respect your concept & its quite alright to be proud of filipino achiever or someone else's for that matter. nasa culture na kasi natin ang pag tangkilik sa idol or heroes & there's really nothing wrong with that. i just happen to have a different form of hero...
nakakalungkot lang isipin na sa dami ng filipino achievers, sa ibang bansa pa sila nagkakaroon ng pagkakataon na makikilala o ma-develop. why can't we propel our achievers straight from the philippines to the world?
good day!

alec ...di ba sila sumikat sa pinas pa lang
alecscotland said
skinny_jeans... ...at one time on an interview with lea salonga, she actually said that "if not for the foreign opportunities (miss saigon)she got, she would still be pickled in those silly love teams". i believe she's referring to aga mulach. i'll try to search for this article & will post details.
hindi masyadong sumikat si leah noon because during those days, ang uso sa philippine cinema ay mukha at hindi talent. she had the philippine broadway "annie" pero hindi naman napansin ng masa.
speaking of talent, marami pa ba sa filipino actors/actresses natin ang talagang may talent? or mukha lang talaga? i'm fond of watching tagalog films (via online video) hoping to see true talent. any recommendations?

alecs... peace to you... ...today... i might say... hindi lang mukha... talent and mukha na cguro...
and the best talent not only mukha is... PEKTO... hahaha!
the best tayong mga pinoy e....

ah ok alec ...but she started and she had a career in the Philippines yon nga lang ang audience ay pinoy lang pero ang miss saigon pang international kaya sya nakilala sa buong mundo. pero di sya nagpunta ng US para mag audition. sa theater kasi di pang masa kaya di sya sumikat sa pinas. maraming talent. si empoy nga nasa malaysia doing a soap opera with jericho rosales kinuha sila ng malaysians, pero kilala na sila sa pinas bago sila.

you're right alecs, even up ...you're right alecs, even up to know, the mentality of our showbiz industry is more into physical looks. even in movies, one film must have 'sikat na actor or actress' or else di kikita ang movie mo. discrimination is still existing. isama na natin ang 'palakasan' blues na kapag wala kang kilala sa loob, balewala ka...

yeah speaking of new artista ...yeah speaking of new artista ewan ko iba walang talent. kaya minsan naiinis ako sa mga soap opera bakit naging bida eh hindi ok acting skills nya para sa akin. at sinundan pa ng bagong teleserye...pero sikat na sikat...

nawawala na yung sense ng being an "artista" sa Philippine entertainment industry.. buti pa si manny POOHquiao litaw na litaw ang talent.. :)

talent ...one thing i love to watch are filipino stand-up comedy acts like si rex navarette. pero marami rin ako napanood sa manila comedy bars na may talent talaga. kayalang ang content ng comedy sa atin ay parati kabastusan, kabaklaan, at political spoofs. sayang tuloy ang talent nila.
tama ka owen, mababa na ang artistic quality ng philippine showbiz. i saw poohquiao too & he really shook the house! kakatawa talaga!
may kamag anak kasi ako sa showbiz & kwento nila yung politics of showbiz. sabi nga nila, wala daw totoo sa buhay showbiz & lahat pre-meditated. in fact even yung kasal ni gabby & sharon...it was forced upon them to propel their careers...
naku si alecs nag showbiz na rin hehehe! all around kasi itong si kinaiinisan nyong si alecs pati laba kula at plansta hehehe!
colorful talaga ang buhay pinoy...nakakamiss din lalo na ngayon tumatanda na ako.

ohbee wan...pinoy blood ...the roots & concept of "filipino" is in fact foreign of spanish origin. the original filipinos however are the negritos who themselves are migrants from mainland asia.
anatomically, there is really no true filipino blood because we are in fact a mix of indonesia, malaysia, china, india, spain, & american. our filipino culture however is quite colorful having a mix of these nations.
just like america, the philippines is a county born out of migrants.
pero sa panahon ngayon (globalization), hindi na impportante kung ano ang iyong lahi. ang importante ay kung anong value meron ka bilang isang tao... i think the world is destined to become one race. ang tawag dyan ohbee wan ay EVOLUTION.

I am proud of this lady dreamandsmile ...She is my lovely wife of 16 years. She is known only to me, but that is worth more to me than any other. She is a loving wife, and a remarkable mother. I know for a fact that the Sun won't shine without her in my life. She is all and everything that I am. She is mine, and I am hers, from the proud day of our marriage. We still love, we cry, we smile and laugh together. She has always been the nuclear reactor that drives me to do what I do. I find no other female that will accept and be proud of all my ups and downs, all my struggles, my faults and weeknessess. I am not a perfect man, but she has always beleived in me although I've never ask her to.
