Your Free Toolkit

e46M3's picture

The best things in life are free. Or so goes the saying.
We've put together an essential toolkit of software that no PC should be without, all free.

Security:
Would you leave the door to your home open or the key on the outside?

AVG Anti-Virus:
I've been using this one for over 3 years now ever since I let my Symantec subscription run out. Auto-updates, scheduled scans and also scans emails in your standalone client.

While you're there grab a copy of AVG's anti-spyware scanner
http://free.grisoft....

ZoneAlarm Firewall:
The ubiquitous free firewall, and does a good job too. Click the "I only want basic ZoneAlarm protection" link.
http://www.zonealarm...

Comodo Firewall:
A dependable alternative to ZoneAlarm.
http://www.personalf...

Spybot Search and Destroy:
Ever wondered what sort of adware and spyware might be lurking under the hood of your machine? Spybot S&D will help you track them down.
http://www.safer-net...

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition:
When it comes to spyware and adware a double or triple layer of defence is advisable. Add this to your library.
http://www.download....

SpyCatcher Express:
Another good spyware and adware scanner. A word of caution though: Spycatcher Express erroneously identifies certain application library files as suspect files. I had trouble getting my Bluetooth software and iTunes installation to run until I disabled Spycatcher. USe with caution.

Hide it and they can't Seek:

Paragon Encrypted Disk SE 3
http://www.download....
TrueCrypt 4.2a
http://www.download....

Do you have a favorite recipe on your PC that you want to hide from prying eyes? Or would you like to protect the financial data stored on your computer? These 2 programs are your lock and key.

Eraser v5.3
When Iranian students stormed the US Embassy in Tehran in November 1979 they managed to put together hundreds of secret documents American embassy staffers thought they'd shredded and destroyed forever.
No need to panic. Eraser will effectively shred anything you have on your PC, never to be seen again.

Productivity Software:
Think Microsoft charges an arm-and-a-leg for its Office suite?

OpenOffice:
Its suite includes a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation manager, a drawing program, and database and mathematical modules. It also works with Microsoft document formats!
http://www.download....

Internet Applications:

Browser:
Mozilla Firefox. In my humble opinion, it's the best.
http://www.mozilla.c...

E-Mail Client
Mozilla Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.c...
Tired of Outlook and Outlook Express. Want an email client with excellent built-in junk mail controls? Give Thunderbird a try.

Desktop Utilities:

Belarc Advisor
http://www.download....
Belarc Advisor tells you exactly what's installed on your PC, hardware and software. It even includes Microsoft Hotfixes.

Good selection. I use AVG Anti Virus, AVG Anti Spyware, Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware SE, SpywareBlaster, Windows Defender, Zone Alarm Firewall.

I've been using these programs for years and they've worked flawlessly for me. I can highly recommend them. Most of them have auto update/scanning features.

I'm a fairly careful surfer and I got busted a few years ago by some nasty stuff that almost nuked my computer. Since then, I've been clean, except for some harmless cookies.

Your input is always useful and welcome. If you think something sucks let us know. We don't just want to hear "wow, thanks" all the time, although it is admittedly nice.

mir83 said Queries ...

I did like to ask a query on MS Excel?

1) How do we alter the page breaks ? Like my problem is that the moment u access the page break preview screen and adjust the break there are multiple breaks in the sheet and the size reduces to 10%. Now how do we alter that scenario?

2)When trying to find and replace values in multiple cells the Update values dialog box appears and the cells display errors '#REF' . How to rectify that mistake and whats the cause?

3) In relation to acrobat files how do I add color and alter formats ?

I hope this is what you mean:
1.
select the row below or column to the right of where you'd like the page break
from the Insert menu, choose Page Break.

Page Break Preview:

click on the View menu and choose 'Page Break Preview'.

You will see a 'big picture' view of your worksheet.

The page breaks appear as either dashed blue lines (automatic page breaks) or solid blue lines (manual page breaks).

move the Page Breaks around by moving your mouse cursor to them, then clicking and dragging them.

To turn Page Break Preview off, go back to the View menu and choose Normal View.

2.

The #REF! error value occurs when a cell reference is not valid." Deleting cells contained in other formulas, moving cells so that references become invalid, pasting a cell on top of another cell that is used in a formula can cause this error as well.
Always fix both column and row when referencing your constants

Please explain what you mean in detail re #3

NO thats not what i meant --

1) After I see 2 hased blue lines and then move or drag it the to the desired position the number of lines multiplies and the setup size reduces to 10%. How to fix it?

2) The #Ref value appears when the find & replace function is carried out...How to avoid and carry out a smooth Find & Replace...

Tina said English /Artabic Text ...

I have family living in Qatar that speak and read Arabic only. I would like to know if there is some kind of software out there that will translate my English typed e-mails to Arabic.
